England - The Southgate Years

New cycle of U19s is always great fun, case of which random youth academy prospect has an Irish granny this time. Jamie Bowden of Spurs is a much better nab than Neville Jr though!

We also got Armstong Oko-Flex back from the English who is one of the few who's genuinely Irish and has flimsy links to England!

Tammy Abraham: England prepared to walk off over racist abuse

Tammy Abraham says England are prepared to walk off the pitch if they are targeted by racist abuse in their Euro 2020 qualifiers this week.

England face the Czech Republic on Friday - then play Bulgaria on Monday in a partially-closed stadium because of fans' racist behaviour in June.

"If it happens to one of us, it happens to all of us," Abraham said.

"Harry Kane even said that if we're not happy, if a player is not happy, we all come off the pitch together."

Would be good to see the players actually do this.

Get the popcorn ready, Rebekah Vardy and Coleen Rooney is the hottest rivalry of 2019

For those wondering what this means:

I think Rebekah Vardy is claiming hacks or something equally bullshit.

I’m heavily pregnant is a pretty decent counterpoint to being publicly accused (to literally millions of people) without actually speaking to her first. This is being picked up across the world and will be causing all kinds of stress to her and consequently baby. The timing and the manner of the accusation is awful on Rooney’s part.

England Women have sold out Wembley for the first time for their friendly against Germany on 9 November. The attendance will smash the 45,619 record for an England Women home fixture, set at the last meeting with Germany at Wembley in 2014.

It’ll also set the record of any women’s match ever I believe.

James Maddison has been named in England's Euro 2020 qualifiers squad - despite the Leicester midfielder being pictured in a casino after pulling out of the last squad with illness.

Defender John Stones, midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and winger Callum Hudson-Odoi have been recalled.

England host Montenegro on 14 November and play in Kosovo on 17 November.

Gareth Southgate's side are top of Group A and need one more point to secure their place at Euro 2020.

Manchester City centre-back Stones replaces Everton defender Michael Keane, while Liverpool's Oxlade-Chamberlain and Chelsea's Hudson-Odoi have been added to a 27-man squad.

Southgate said the "squad is a little larger than normal" because there were a "couple of injury doubts".

Maddison has been picked in the past three squads but is yet to make his debut for England.

"He's only been in two squads," said Southgate. "He had to go home ill last time. We sent him home - he was ill.

"Any suggestion he chose to go home because he wanted to go out is unfair. It's not a great decision he took [to visit a casino].

"As an England player you have a different profile. Everyone has a camera-phone and wants to make money selling pictures.

"We are supporting him because we have picked him and he has to fight for his place like everybody else."

Southgate added that Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish was "very close" to making his squad.

"Grealish is a very good player - I've watched him closely this season," he said.

"The reality is he's up against Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

"If we have any issues with the squad I wouldn't hesitate to call him up. He was very close and just has to keep playing the way he is."

England's 6-0 victory in Bulgaria last time out was overshadowed by fans' racist abuse towards players, forcing the match to be stopped twice.

Bulgaria, who already had a partial stadium closure for that match, have been ordered to play two matches behind closed doors - one suspended for two years - and fined 75,000 euros (£65,000) by Uefa as punishment.

Southgate says the punishment for racism is "really difficult to pitch" and believes it is a wider problem in society.

"For me, the important thing was that the subject was highlighted to everybody, the importance of it, the fact that our players owned the moment, if you want," he said.

"The people who were in the stadium in Sofia and then left before half-time were nothing to do with football - they saw an opportunity to make a political stand, for whatever reason. That is what happens in society.

"So until we have that situation in society sorted out, then it is going to spill into football grounds because people feel that's an opportunity.

"If we eradicate it within football grounds, that won't mean that it won't exist outside football grounds. So that's an important area to note."

The England boss says his players want to continue to show the world that they "work as a team".

"They can see how close the team are, they can see the diversity of the team, the different backgrounds and how they're just a group of brothers who come together and want to play football and enjoy each other's company," added Southgate.

"That in itself is a hugely powerful message for everybody in society."

England's players will wear "legacy numbers" on their shirts against Montenegro on 14th November to mark the nation's 1,000th international.

Every player to have represented England in the past 147 years will be given their own number.

Former captains and members of the 1966 World Cup-winning team will be at Wembley Stadium to mark the occasion.

"To be involved in this game is a particularly poignant moment," manager Gareth Southgate said.

"It's important we leave the shirt in a better place than when we found it."

The legacy number system will run all the way from Robert Baker, the goalkeeper in the first international, to the most recent cap winner Tyrone Mings, at 1,244.

Southgate, who played for England between 1995 and 2004, has been given the number 1,071.

The Football Association said the legacy numbers would be printed underneath the national crest. The numbers will be retained in subsequent games, but will instead be printed inside the collar.

England's cricket players also wear legacy numbers on their shirts as a chronological record of their first cap.

You'd have to presume that in those instances, they'll do it alphabetically.

Yeah but, if Tomori comes off the bench but Maddison doesn't, in that scenario he'd have the wrong number on :P.

Don't worry, this won't keep me awake tonight.
