Sheffield United’s Oli McBurnie and Rhian Brewster have been charged after a police investigation into incidents during the club’s Championship playoff semi-final defeat by Nottingham Forest.

The Blades said they were “disappointed” to learn the pair face criminal action after an inquiry by Nottinghamshire police. It is not yet known what the players are accused of doing. Both deny wrongdoing.

The allegations relate to the club’s playoff semi-final second leg at the City Ground on 17 May. Forest, who went on to earn promotion, won 3-2 on penalties after the tie ended 3-3 on aggregate. Home fans invaded the pitch in celebration, during which United’s Billy Sharp was assaulted. A man was jailed for 24 weeks after pleading guilty to assaulting Sharp.

“Sheffield United Football Club is disappointed to learn that Rhian Brewster and Oli McBurnie have been charged following the incidents that took place at the EFL Championship play-off semi-final second leg against Nottingham Forest last month,” a club statement said.

“Both players voluntarily engaged in interviews with Nottinghamshire Police in the aftermath of the fixture which saw their teammate Billy Sharp the victim of assault in the chaos which followed the final whistle.

“Brewster and McBurnie strenuously deny the charges brought against them and football manager Paul Heckingbottom, who wrote letters to the League Managers Association, the Professional Footballers’ Association, the EFL and FA following a number of pitch invasions last month – including one involving Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira – is continuing discussions with key stakeholders in a bid to better protect players and staff in their place of work.”

Nottinghamshire Police have been approached for comment.

Watford have cancelled a friendly against the Qatar national team after two supporters’ groups voiced concerns about the country’s human rights record.

The two groups – Women of Watford (WOW) and Proud Hornets – had urged the club to display their support for “all human rights, the LGBT+ community and women’s rights” at the game but the fixture will no longer take place.

“The game was never finalised and it became abundantly clear this was a game not to play; as such, the schedule was revised,” a club spokesperson said in a statement.

Qatar’s Football Association (QFA) said it had received a number of offers from European clubs, including Watford, to play friendly matches.

“After studying the offers … we selected some friendly matches with various European teams and Watford was not among these matches that the team will play,” the QFA said in a statement. The QFA did not mention the other European clubs involved.

Homosexuality is illegal in the Gulf state – which is hosting the World Cup later this year – while Human Rights Watch says Qatari laws discriminate against women and LGBT individuals.

“WOW and Proud Hornets are delighted that Watford FC has listened to our concerns and cancelled the game with Qatar,” the two groups said in a joint statement on Twitter. “We look forward to continuing our discussions with the club on all equality, diversity and inclusion issues.”

Watford were relegated from the Premier League last season after finishing 19th.

Do people here genuinely want Derby to go out of business?

I was wondering the same. I don't particularly care about the club but would never want to see them cease operations. Just at the very high level there are people whose livelihoods are directly affected by that.

Well, Matt does.

Other than that no.

Nobody should want any club to go bust. People losing their jobs and fans losing an important part of their life because of some reckless businessman should never be celebrated.

There are football clubs I can't stand for rivalry reasons and other things, but I'd not want any of them to go to the wall.

Some Leeds fans do because they're still bitter over spy-gate.

It's a bit of a strange position to take. Unless I've missed something, Leeds were the ones entirely in the wrong. Why get angry at a club for complaining about something they had every right to complain about?

Because they have a massive chip on their shoulders about pretty much everything.
