Simpe question I believe; What do music producers do?

I believe in most rap or pop music to "produce" means to create the backing music and engineer the artist's sound. Basically "producing" the music, hence the name.

In rock/indie music they record the music and try and get the best sound out of it using effects and studio techniques.
