Japanese movie crowd question.

I am watching a Star Wars documentary and it talks about the Japanese release. One of the people on with the film thought that when there was no reaction or applause that it was a flop. He later found out that it is the biggest compliment that a Japanese audience can give.

What is their logic behind this?

Am I the only one who hates when people clap at movies? I mean, the people are not there to actually see you clap for them. It seems dumb. Laughing is alright, in my opinion. But I hate when people clap.

I've only seen people do it for Star Wars movies...

It doesn't bother me to much.

It's pointless... laughter is an involuntary response, so that's fine. But clapping? You don't clap at the TV show you're watching at home, why clap at a movie? Unless it's a premiere or something like that, I don't see the point.

We don't get any clapping here in the UK. If someone clapped or applauded when I saw a movie i'd throw something vey hard and heavy at them. Stupid cunts, it's a film. What the fuck are you doing. Sit the fuck down and shut up. There's a big difference between laughing and clapping. If it'sa funny movie laughing obviously shows respect to that fact, because it's funny so you can laugh. But clapping, what the fuck does that do?

Clapping is pathetic, they can't hear you so stop it.

I also don't get this 'dressing up for Star Wars' thing, its actually completely sad, but I suppose its only the geeks who do that.

People dress up for everything. It's those who dress up while waiting in line to buy a book that are just silly. My aunt's become a Harry Potter obsessive and will be in line overnight in London for the next book release. Whether she's dressing up personally, I declined to ask.

My niece and one of her friends dressed up for the Harry Potter book, but then again, they were having a huge party at the bookstore, with prizes for best costume and such.

Silence is also used a lot within Japanese films - long lingering shots with no sound...Just a little fact there movie fans!

The respect from silence is massive.

I'd prefer that any day over cheesy clapping.

It's like in China where you should always leave some of your food to show your host has cooked too much and has therefore been a good host.

Eating all of the food shows your host didn't cook enough for you and has therefore failed!

We may see it as back to front (like the silence in movies thing) but I believe it makes more sense, in a similar way to silence in films.

Talking, laughing and clapping is overrated anyway!!!
