Hallelujah

I'm sure some of you have heard this song, it's appeared in Shrek and was voted something like Canada's song of the century or something similiar. Written by Leonard Cohen, it's one of my favorite songs.

But I have a problem with the covers that have been made of it. Such as the Jeff Buckley version and the version from Shrek (Im not sure if they're the same). Mainly because they change the song totally with different lyrics. Up to a certain point they're the same but then the orginal version disappears and it becomes a different song. Citing Jeff Buckleys version as an example.. his version has two extra verses and leaves out the last verse of Cohens orginal.

I hate it when people change lyrics to songs.

Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah Lyrics

Now I've heard there was a secret chord

That David played, and it pleased the Lord

But you don't really care for music, do you?

It goes like this

The fourth, the fifth

The minor fall, the major lift

The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah

Hallelujah

Hallelujah

Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof

You saw her bathing on the roof

Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew her

She tied you

To a kitchen chair

She broke your throne, and she cut your hair

And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain

I don't even know the name

But if I did, well really, what's it to you?

There's a blaze of light

In every word

It doesn't matter which you heard

The holy or the broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much

I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch

I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you

And even though

It all went wrong

I'll stand before the Lord of Song

With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah

Artist: Jeff Buckley Lyrics

Song: Hallelujah Lyrics

I heard there was a secret chord

that David played and it pleased the Lord

but you don't really care for music do ya

Well it goes like this the fourth the fifth

the minor fall and the major lift

the baffled king composing hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah

Well your faith was strong but you needed proof

you saw her bathing on the roof

her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya

she tied you to a kitchen chair

she broke your throne and she cut your hair

and from your lips she drew the hallelujah.

Hallelujah,hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah

Baby I've been here before

I've seen this room and I've walked this floor

You know, I used to live alone before I knew ya

And I've seen your flag on the marble arch

and love is not a victory march

it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah,hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah

Well there was a time when you let me know

what's really going on below

but now you never show that to me do ya

but remember when I moved in you

and the Holy dove was moving too

and every breath we drew was hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah

Well maybe there's a God above

but all I've ever learned from love

was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya

And it's not a cry that you hear at night

it's not somebody who's seen the light

it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah

Hallelujah

See how the song is changed?

I love Leonard Cohen, "I can't forget" is my favorite song, but I never really cared for Hallelujah, I preferred Buckley's version.

And I think Neil Young's "After the Goldrush" or Rush's "2112" deserved to be Canada's song of the century, personally ;)

Personally, I think Cohen's one of the best song-writers ever (he's better than Dylan IMO). Of his songs, I love "Bird On A Wire", "Hallelujah", "Seems So Long Ago, Nancy", "Famous Blue Raincoat" and "Chelsea Hotel No.2".
