They say he's had his moment, that he can't win the big one again. But Chris Benoit showed on Showtime that he's still got it, and he's going for it all at the Royal Rumble.

Benoit defeated Edge in a stellar match on Monday night when he made DWA World Heavyweight Champion Jeff Jarrett's teammate in the Unholy Alliance tap out to the Crippler Crossface in eleven minutes. But it was what happened after the match that sent the crowd into a frenzy. Earlier in the evening, Jeff Jarrett had announced that the World Title would be staying inside the Unholy Alliance for a long, long time, as Simon Diamond, Johnny Swinger and Edge had all been entered into the Royal Rumble match, and after Jarrett beat Benoit and Kurt Angle to retain his title, either Edge, Diamond or Swinger would win the Royal Rumble match and face Jarrett at WrestleMania 22. So when Jarrett, Edge, Diamond, Swinger and Jim Cornette indulged in a post-match beatdown of Benoit, Royal Rumble competitors BG James, Ron Killings, Konnan, Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero rushed down to make the save, leaving the Unholy Alliance no choice but to retreat.

Guerrero and Mysterio, in fact, had only qualified for the Rumble earlier in the evening. Eddie Guerrero told Paul Heyman he wanted a piece of Kane. Heyman promised Eddie a place in the Royal Rumble if he could get past Jushin "Thunder" Liger. We spent most of the evening excitedly anticipating a Guerrero/Liger battle, but Eddie found out that by Jushin Liger, Paul Heyman had meant Liger's trio of himself, Yoshihiro Tajiri and Ultimo Dragon. For a while, it looked like Eddie's chances of qualifying for the Royal Rumble had gone, but High Velocity came to the rescue: Getting revenge for Kyo Dai's involvement in The Amazing Red's match with Petey Williams earlier on, Red, Juventud Guerrera and Super Crazy attacked Kyo Dai and allowed Eddie Guerrero to get a feet-on-the-ropes victory over Liger, much to the crowd's delight.

Rey Mysterio had a much more painful path to the Rumble. Defending his Prime Time Title against Abyss in a "Winner Take All" match, where the winner of the belt would also qualify for the Royal Rumble, the monster Abyss screwed himself over, hitting Mysterio with the belt after ducking under a West Coast Pop. Upon hearing Tony Chimel's announcement that Mysterio had won by disqualification, Abyss went crazy, and had to be restrained by security.

Another title was on the line on Showtime: the Show-Train Chronicles made their first defense of the Tag Team Championship against Too Cool. Big Show and A-Train made quick work of Scotty 2 Hotty and Grand Master Sexay, defeating them in just over three minutes when Big Show laid out Scotty with the Chokeslam. But after the match, the Dudley Boyz set out to make an impact on the Tag Team Champions, taking out a table and setting fire to it. The Big Show narrowly avoided being put through the table and managed to escape intact, but the Dudleys sent a message to the men they will meet at the Royal Rumble when they elected to put Grand Master Sexay through the flaming table instead.

As mentioned earlier, also on Showtime, Petey Williams gained a victory heading into his Light Heavyweight Title match with Jeff Hardy on Bad Influence TV this Saturday, Randy Orton sent a message to John Cena in a segment resembling a news broadcast called RNN, telling Cena he could and would kill his legend before it's even begun. And also, Rob Van Dam played a video package of Universal Champion AJ Styles, telling the man he meets at the Royal Rumble that he never made it to the big-time and wouldn't get lucky again at the Royal Rumble. And with just thirteen days to go until the pay-per-view extravaganza, we shall see if this claim holds true.

Quick Match Results:

Tag Titles: The Show-Train Chronicles def. Too Cool to retain

Petey Williams def. The Amazing Red

Prime Time Title: Rey Mysterio def. Abyss by DQ to retain

Eddie Guerrero def. Kyo Dai to qualify for the Royal Rumble

Chris Benoit def. Edge

What do you think? This format or the old one?

We got a sneak preview of the Royal Rumble on Bad Influence TV as Diamond Dallas Page, returning from an attack by Kane a week previously, made an Over-The-Top-Rope challenge for BITV's Main Event, and it had a shock ending.

The action was fast and furious as Royal Rumble participants BG James, Ron Killings, Konnan, Randy Orton, John Cena, Edge, Simon Diamond, Johnny Swinger and Rey Mysterio fought each other in an attempt to gain a psychological advantage heading into the big match in eight days time. Every time a superstar was eliminated, a new one entered the fray, but there was confusion straight away as Randy Orton and John Cena eliminated each other. Johnny Swinger came out next, and managed to eliminate Ron Killings, but got confused as his tag team partner Simon Diamond made his way out. Diamond and Swinger didn't want to fight each other, and paid the price when BG James and Konnan attacked both men and eliminated them. Diamond Dallas Page, who was overseeing the contest from the announce table, allowed this and then watched the two members of 3 Live Kru lock up in friendly competition, with James eventually throwing Konnan over. James went over the top almost straight away, though, as Edge came from nowhere and took him out. Rey Mysterio was who we thought was the final entrant, and he went back and forth with Edge, with the Prime Time Champion eventually scoring an upset when Chris Benoit appeared at ringside, and Mysterio dropkicked Edge off of the turnbuckle and over the top. Benoit left, laughing, but the party was cut short for Mysterio as Abyss came in from behind with a chain attack on Rey Mysterio. The monster threw Rey around the ring and eventually threw him over the top rope, and was declared the winner by Commissioner Heyman, who rewarded the monster with a Royal Rumble spot for winning the challenge, much to DDP's chagrin.

Benoit felt he had to make some sort of impact on "Mr. Money in the Bank" following Edge's attempts to soften up Benoit for Jeff Jarrett's title defense against Benoit and Kurt Angle at the Royal Rumble. Kurt Angle defeated Shark Boy with relative ease in Bad Influence TV's opening match, and then called out either of his opponents at the Royal Rumble. Benoit answered Angle's challenge, and the two had some verbal warfare, before Benoit decided that the DWA World Heavyweight Champion should join the debate, and called out Jeff Jarrett - however it was Jarrett's Unholy Alliance teammate Edge, along with Jim Cornette, who answered Benoit's call. After announcing Jarrett was taking a well-deserved night off, Edge spouted abuse at Benoit and Angle, and after Kurt Angle simply said he didn't need to listen to Edge and would prove himself at the Rumble and left, Edge hit Benoit with an unexpected field goal kick between the legs. As Benoit keeled over in agony on the floor, Edge said that it was what he got for getting other people involved on Monday night.

The much-anticipated Light Heavyweight Championship match between Jeff Hardy and Petey Williams took place on Bad Influence TV, and Jeff was at a disadvantage from the getgo as Eric Young, Bobby Roode and Scott D'Amore were at ringside, while Jeff's brother Matt was still out injured from Team Canada's attack. The action was fast and furious as Hardy gave everything he possibly could against seemingly insurmountable odds, and frustrated Petey Williams when he kicked out of several high-impact maneuvers. Jeff held the advantage for a short while, but Petey Williams regained it by pushing the referee into the ropes when Jeff was gearing up for a Swanton Bomb. The referee berated Petey Williams, but was then distracted by Scott D'Amore, long enough for Petey Williams to hit a low blow and then the Canadian Destroyer - but as the referee turned, he called for the bell. After some confusion, ring announcer Tony Chimel announced the match a time limit draw - Jeff Hardy retained the title, and Petey Williams and Team Canada were irate.

Along with the monster Abyss, four more men were entered into the Royal Rumble on Saturday night. Paul Heyman allowed Joey Mercury and Johnny Nitro into the Royal Rumble early in the night, and after America's Most Wanted entered Paul Heyman's office and MNM laughed at them, they confronted Mercury and Nitro. Diamond Dallas Page entered the office and made the match between AMW and MNM. America's Most Wanted got the victory in the match, and as Diamond Dallas Page had earlier promised, a place each in the Rumble match, but it was MNM who had the last laugh, as they jumped a celebrating AMW from behind, and Johnny Nitro even went so far as to choke Chris Harris out with his fur coat.

We were given a happy reminder of WCW's cruiserweight division as Juventud Guerrera of High Velocity teamed up with "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero against the team of Christopher Daniels and Jushin "Thunder" Liger. Both squadrons of High Velocity and Kyo Dai, and Kyo Dai were joined by a young Japanese lady we learned was called Michiko Omukai. And after Eddie got his second win over Liger in a week with a Frog Splash, Juventud Guerrera laughed in Jushin's face (or rather, mask), only to be misted by Yoshihiro Tajiri. High Velocity pulled Juventud out of there, and Liger, Tajiri, Dragon and Omukai stood in the ring, as Omukai took a microphone and translated Jushin Liger's challenge for a six-man tag at the Royal Rumble. Naturally, the team of Guerrera, Super Crazy and the Amazing Red accepted, and we have another huge match for the Rumble pay-per-view on January 22.

Also on Bad Influence TV, AJ Styles responded to Rob Van Dam's video package of himself with some strong words of his own - after a montage of "Mr. Monday Night's" career, Styles said that his victory over RVD at Genocide was no fluke, and just to piss RVD off, he would retain the belt at the Royal Rumble and hold onto it for twenty-four months. The Dudley Boyz also sent an intimidating message to the Show-Train Chronicles, stood in front of a flaming table and telling them their time was almost up.

Quick Match Results:

Kurt Angle def. Shark Boy

America's Most Wanted def. MNM

Eddie Guerrero & Juventud Guerrera def. Christopher Daniels & Jushin Liger

One of the golden rules of wrestling is to never believe that someone truly has the night off, or isn't in the building. From now on, that rule will be etched into the head of Chris Benoit.

One week after making Edge tap out to the Crippler Crossface, the "Rabid Wolverine" locked up with "Mr. Money in the Bank" one more time, and again, Benoit came out victorious - but only by disqualification. After Edge came out at the beginning of the evening to challenge Benoit, Benoit originally turned him down, saying he didn't feel like being subjected to a five-on-one Unholy Alliance beatdown. But Edge assured Benoit that he was the only member of the Unholy Alliance in the building, a claim backed up by Diamond Dallas Page as he came out to make the match. But when the match went down, it was a very different story: Jeff Jarrett came in through the crowd and caused the disqualification when he whacked Benoit around the head with his title belt. Jarrett and Edge were soon joined by Simon Diamond and Johnny Swinger to beat down Benoit - but support came from an unlikely source, as Kurt Angle ran in and nailed Angle Slams on Simon Diamond and Edge as Jeff Jarrett retreated. Angle stared down Jarrett's Unholy Alliance teammates as they backed off, but they were to return as Jarrett snuck up and hit Kurt Angle with a devastating Stroke. The Unholy Alliance proceeded to beat down Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit, and it was Jeff Jarrett who looked strong as ever heading into the Triple Threat match at the Royal Rumble.

Tensions are also escalating between the competitors in the Royal Rumble match, and in two brilliant matches between Rumble competitors, Christopher Daniels teamed with MNM and pinned James Storm as his team defeated America's Most Wanted and Eddie Guerrero, and also the Prime Time Title was on the line as Rey Mysterio defended against Randy Orton. This match was chaotic as John Cena, having cut a brutal rap on Randy Orton prior to the match, joined Joey Styles and Tazz at ringside for commentary. Orton was furious at Cena's rap and was somewhat distracted by the former WWE Champion's presence at ringside, a distraction which Rey Mysterio took advantage of, and as Cena and Orton argued with ring ropes, ringside mats and the announce table between them, Rey Mysterio dropkicked Orton into the middle rope and hit a 619/Springboard Leg Drop combo to finish Orton off - but only when Cena removed Randy Orton's foot from the bottom rope. But as Orton and Cena stared down in the ring, Abyss came out of nowhere with a chain and swung it at Cena's head, knocking him down. Randy Orton tried to join in the assault, but got attacked by Abyss as well. Rey Mysterio then jumped the monster, and knocked him down with dropkicks to the knees. But as the Prime Time Champion ran at the former NWA Tag Team Champion, Abyss sprang up and hit Mysterio with a Black Hole Slam. Who can stop Abyss before Sunday's Royal Rumble?

The final place in the Royal Rumble was decided, but it was strange fashion: as the promising new tag team of Shark Boy and The Hurricane defeated the Suicide Blondes, Commissioner Heyman appeared and allowed the two, after that victory, one place in the Rumble. They'd have to fight for the place. They did so, and The Hurricane finished off his friend with the Eye of the Hurricane to enter his fifth Royal Rumble match. Also, the Show-Train Chronicles laughed off the Dudley Boyz' comments on Bad Influence TV, as they too stood in front of a flaming table and told the Dudleys to keep dreaming, because the DWA Tag Team Championship was not something they'd add to their illustrious repertoire.

Quick Match Results:

Shark Boy & The Hurricane def. The Suicide Blondes

The Hurricane def. Shark Boy

Christopher Daniels & MNM def. Eddie Guerrero & America's Most Wanted

Prime Time Title: Rey Mysterio def. Randy Orton to retain

Chris Benoit def. Edge by DQ

One of the most open Royal Rumbles in years, the 2006 edition of the match has no favourites - but one man will almost definitely have a psychological advantage over twenty-nine others.

Even in the last night of his suspension, Kane managed to make an impact as his fellow Royal Rumble competitors strived to make an impact on their opponents. Bad Influence TV's Main Event featured a smash-mouth, first-ever confrontation between John Cena and Abyss, but there was no decision as Rey Mysterio ran out and caused a No Contest when he attacked Abyss. Randy Orton ran in and RKO'ed Mysterio, but Orton was then taking out with a wild chain shot from Abyss, who then suffered an FU from Cena. Edge came out of nowhere and hit the Edgecution on Cena, and was poised and ready to Spear Cena, but Eddie Guerrero attacked Edge and threw him over the top rope. Guerrero was then attacked by Christopher Daniels, and Guerrero and Daniels exchanged blows before Daniels went to toss Eddie, but Eddie hung on and skinned the cat, just as Edge got back into the ring, and Abyss, Cena, Orton, and Mysterio got up. Seven men stood poised and ready to fight in the ring, but Kane's pyro went off and his music played. Shocked, a couple of the seven fell off of their feet and others looked scared, before the red light and music subsided and somewhere, we knew, Kane was laughing.

A psychological advantage was also gained going into the DWA World Heavyweight Championship match between Jeff Jarrett, Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit at the Royal Rumble. Commissioner Heyman told Chris Benoit he would be teaming with none other than Kurt Angle against Simon Diamond and Johnny Swinger later in the evening. Despite their differences, Angle and Benoit showed a mutual respect and teamed well, toppling the former NWA Tag Team Champions and Unholy Alliance members. But as soon as their winning bell ended, Angle and Benoit went nose-to-nose, talking trash to each other. Jeff Jarrett saw this as an ideal chance to attack his two distracted opponents, but as he snuck up on them, guitar in hand, both men turned and nailed Jarrett. Angle and Benoit subjected Jarrett to a painful Crippler Crossface/Ankle Lock combo which had Jarrett tapping furiously. When the two released the holds, they stared down again, and this time it was for real: both men stood over the fallen body of the Heavyweight Champion of the World, and both men knew they wanted that title.

Rob Van Dam and AJ Styles have been at war for the past few weeks over the Universal Championship, and when the two meet at the Royal Rumble, it will be a fierce battle between two men with an intense distaste for each other. Van Dam was wrestling in a warmup match for the next day's Universal Title shot on Bad Influence TV, and "One-Legged Wonder" Zach Gowen could do little to stop an on-form "Whole Dam Show," as RVD got the pin quickly with the Five Star Frog Splash. After the match, Van Dam called out Styles, who obliged quickly, and the two men had a war of words, making it very clear that they both would give their all to have the belt around their waist in twenty-four hours time.

Matt Hardy returned to Bad Influence TV, but it was a belated return as Team Canada subjected Jeff Hardy to a beatdown after Petey Williams called the Light Heavyweight Champion out. Jeff was busted open before Matt made the save with a steel chair. Team Canada retreated, but Jeff clearly felt that Matt could have been there sooner. The two argued in the ring as Team Canada backed up the ramp, but quickly shook hands and made up - their attention must be focused on their 2-on-3 Handicap match against Petey Williams, Bobby Roode and Eric Young at the Royal Rumble.

In more Rumble warmup matches, the Big Show pinned Bubba Ray Dudley in a match that can't have helped the Dudley Boyz' confidence before their Flaming Tables match with the Show-Train Chronicles. Show dominated, with Bubba Ray getting very little offense, as D-Von Dudley and A-Train watched on. Also, Super Crazy beat Yoshihiro Tajiri in a speedy battle, which was overseen by members of High Velocity and Kyo Dai.

Quick Match Results:

Big Show def. Bubba Ray Dudley

Super Crazy def. Yoshihiro Tajiri

Kurt Angle & Chris Benoit def. Simon Diamond & Johnny Swinger

Rob Van Dam def. Zach Gowen
