Sorry for the double post, but I just got back from Clerks II and I loved it. It is more of a normal comedy than Clerks was, but thats almost a good thing. In terms of comedy I laughed more than I did in Clerks, but overall I think Clerks was a better actual movie. Its hard to explain, but Clerks II is awesome, go see it.

It's awesome. Instant Kevin Smith classic, and exactly the film he needed to make to reassure his fanbase. The cameos from VA alumni are generally all very brief, but effective in their own right. It very succinctly balances between being the kind of sharp comedy that the first one was, and having a good deal of dramatic weight as it examines, as Smith puts it "What happens to the angry young man when he turns thirty." If this is Kevin's new direction, I'm behind it all the way.

My thoughts...

-If you go into this expecting something on the level of the original Clerks, you'll be disappointed. If you go expecting something that's meant for a wide, commercial audience, but still definitely a Kevin Smith film, you'll be fine.

-My main problem with the film (I can overlook the single plot hole) was the pacing, which contributed to the film being WAY too short. They spend 20 minutes or so on the climatic scene (which is done PERFECTLY, each joke funnier than the last), maybe 15 on the immediate aftermath, and then, poof, the movie's over, and it's only been 90 minutes.

-The BEST thing about the movie, on the other hand, was (or were) Jay and Silent Bob. It's unbelievably easy to write for those guys, and a nice twist was thrown in this time.

-As for humour, it's different. The original Clerks had the 'contractors on the Death Star' argument, and Randall reading the list of porn films in front of the 5-year-old. Here, the arguments were over ass-to-mouth (which lasts all of two minutes, and they manage to miss THE most obvious setup for a callback later on...), and LOTR vs. Star Wars (which wasn't all that good). However, the two running jokes (Anne Frank and porch monkeys) worked great.

-Some of the dialogue seemed straight out of the playbook of a Seinfeld or Corner Gas. Dunno if that's a good or bad thing.

-Kevin Smith has the right idea in liking Canadian culture, but he's picking the worst examples. First it was Degrassi, now Alanis Morissette???

First off I want to say that I loved the movie, and I think it was a great set up, as well as a instant buy once it comes to dvd for me. Now that that is out of the way, there is only a few things I didn't like:

- The color imagery in this one did work to perfection, though I will always be a sucker to the black and white. I was hoping that

When they went back to the Quick Stop, when Jay and Silent Bob walked up, the color would have faded back to black and white, just for sentimental value. But that is nothing major.

I loved the movie also. The porch monkey argument was amazing, but it seemed kinda weird hearing Randal say nigger.

While the crude humor of that scene is funny in its own right, it's the slightly-subtle irony that makes that scene one of my favorites.

Synopsis placed in spoiler tags for precautionary measures:

I originally thought it wouldn't go in the racial direction after Earthquake & Sykes talked about "those Mexicans" (with the Mexican guys right behind them, no less.) I figured that would be the throw-away cameo joke.

When Randall started busting out the lexicon, though, I found myself laughing more at the fact that Wanda's character got offended (going so far as to calling out Randall's "cracka ass") than the words being spouted. After making what could be viewed as a racial crack at "those Mexicans", Sykes couldn't even handle it being thrown back at her by someone who had no idea (at the time) of its meaning. Absolutely loved it.

Bottom line, I hope that if they do another Jay And Silent Bob movie (and Kevin says he will should Mewes stay clean for 5 years, he's over 3 now) we see more of all four Clerks II main characters. Elias is fucking gold.

Trevor Fehrman damn near stole the show in the early going, and played that role to the hilt.

His talk with Randall about the trolls had me in stitches, if only because of Randall's expression and the musical selection for that scene. Elias went from innocent Cathloic boy to serial killer real quick. The best moment was near the end: "I'm sorry, Jesus!" Not to mention that he's left alone at his job of choice at least three times.

Seriously, he played the perfect fodder for Randall and a good supporting character overall ("Nice shot...")

If Elias doesn't return in any other eventual Kevin Smith flicks then I think I'm going to riot. He was one of my favorite parts of this movie. The Porchmonkey part was probably the funniest part of the movie to me, I'm going to see it a 2nd time tomorrow with some other friends who have been dying to see it and I'm sure I'll love it just as much the 2nd time.

An interesting bit of coincidence regarding the ending and the animated series.

At the end of the second animated episode (when Dante and Randall are locked in the freezer of the Quick Stop), the ending features Jay mimicking "Stand By Me" by recollecting what happened to his friends. Ultimately, Dante gets married and Randall owns the shop.

Considering those things actually happen at the end of the second movie, it's a pretty cool coincidence.

I've been a huge Clerks fan for a few years, Clerks and the Animated Series are gold in my view. That considered, I had a skeptical attitude when I went to see the movie tonight.

Personally, I loved the movie. It was awesome, and with that ending, it does have the Clerks come full circle. I really thought that the movie was great. Was offensive, agressive, some of the dialogue still held that Clerks feeling which was really nice. I found the ending a bit meh, I enjoyed it, but after the 80 some odd minutes of hilarity(minus a few minutes of plot and the like) the ending was a bit of a let down for the end, not so much that it ruined anything.... I guess I just wanted Randall to go on one for rant on a customer before it ended.

All in all a great movie.

Good god, with Randall and Elias about the trolls, good fucking lord I was crying in my seat over it. Randall's facial expressions sold it beautifully!

Just saw it, loved it. Laughed my ass off throughout and got a little choked up at the end, was a great movie...even Anne Frank could see that.

End was good with the Milk Maid there, though was hoping for it to pull back a little more and have Shell Shocked Counselor next to her, heh. Also when that guy asked for a pack of cigarettes I was expecting to hear "Are you sure?" would have liked some more call backs to the other movies like Smith's did in the other movies, but other than that it was still great.

To me, the movie lived up to expectations set by the first. It was not the same as the original, but it was hilarious. And I loved how it ended, because you now feel good about where the characters are at.

I forgot that Jay and Silent Bob still had there mad movie money from the Bluntman and Chronic movies. And is it hilarious that seeing God herself didn't change Jay and Silent Bob, but going to rehab did?
