Singer James Brown, known as the "Godfather of Soul", has died at the age of 73, his agent has said.

He had been admitted to hospital in Atlanta to be treated for pneumonia but died at 0145 local time (0645 GMT), said Frank Copsidas.

The star was famous for hits including I Got You (I Feel Good), Papa's Got a Brand New Bag and Living in America.

The cause of Brown's death remained unclear at this stage, Mr Copsidas told the Associated Press

I've had his Best Of on for an hour so in solemn tribute. It's weird to be listening to it and not attempting to do the funky dancing (it's all in the feet, you know) but it doesn't seem appropriate.

Yeah, add me to the strange coincidence of listening/talking about him before I knew. My mom decided to play him last night at my brothers on a whim before any of us had any clue.

A real shame that a very important man in music passed on. He seemed like a pretty good, genuine guy from interviews I had seen of him. Seemed like a lot of fun to be around, and very lively. R.I.P. James Brown.
