Academy Award Nominations Announced

Would someone mind telling me how in the hell Jack Nicholson didn't even get fucking nominated for best supporting actor for The Departed? Seriously, I loved that film and he was the best thing in it by far. Wahlberg impressed me (mainly because I didn't realise he was such a good actor), but not to the extent that he should be nominated for several awards ahead of Nicholson.

And I liked The Black Dahlia <_<

I am very happy for:

Letters for BP

Clint for BD

Children of Men getting a little love

United 93 BD

Meryl's nom

Pan's love

And The Departed(Best film of the year) getting what its getting

I am also surprised for the following reasons:

No Dreamgirls for BP

No Volver for Foreign Laguage film

Leo's nom for Blood Diamond and not for The Departed

Jack Nicholson not in for The Departed

Shocked by Leo's Blood Diamond nom, but it was the 'leadier' role I suppose. Babel is my early prediction for BP(reminding me of the Crash win last year), (Departed is NOT winning BP, just look at the content, its not an AMPAS kind of film.) with Scorsese for Director or Clint in an upset. Never, never underestimate the love for Clint and Mr. Speilberg's film's @ AMPAS!

One more thing, why can't the Academy give Dame Helen Mirren the Oscar already.

Have you seen Venus, Hammy?

Or are you just a horrible British fanboy? :shifty:

They gave Peter O'Toole the lifetime award a while back and he nearly didn't accept it saying something about the "Main buggar still up for grabs" or something. Now he's up for it. I haven't seen the movie, only clips and reviews, but I'm unaware of any other lifetime award winners winning best actor AFTER the lifetime award.

And I'm a horrible British fanboy. :pervert:

No Casino Royale love? If I still had any faith in the Academy, I'd be angry. After they shafted Jim Carrey for Eternal Sunshine, I decided maybe there wasn't any point hoping for justice anymore.

Meh the Academy always give Scorcese a nomination to mess with his head, and then give all the awards to whoever paid them the most :shifty:

Guest RINGY SAID DANCE

Infernal Affairs was a tacky pile of shit. Especially compared to the Departed.

I mean, the early parts of the film are great, before they dwell into that whole Buddhist "how to differ between good or evil" stuff. And then, it goes emo. That whole shit where that tool SP Wong is thrown off the roof and they play horridly, HORRIDLY, tacky 80s style emo movie music and show him falling down all gay like a fag is bad enough. Then suddenly, the whole film is infused with that horrible, horrible music and everyone is all

:crying: and especially when the good guy bites the dust and there are tears all over the place and cheesiness. And that chick is all :crying: at his funeral and emo. It almost felt American :shifty:

IA doesn't have that cool effect in my book. It's a tale of morality as opposed to the Departed's old-school gangster flick with a modern spin. TD had a much greater focus on character development and acting (yes, Andy Lau, it's called acting, Tony Leung is doing it, why can't you?) as opposed to the heavy focus on style (which, granted, was IA's strong point and which Scorcese shifted to Mobster Chic).

Ultimately, IA is a preachy tale of morality with a slightly anti-governmental stance. It looks nice and the early action is good but once it takes the sappy and cheesy spin, it turns from a decent movie to a tacky one. It's just not nearly as good as the Departed.

Not that I think the Departed is the best movie ever/of the year or anything.

I went out and bought Infernal Affairs on the advice of EWBers and couldn't even sit through it. I'm hoping Oldboy lives up to the vast amount of hype, because it's going to cost me a buttload to buy a non pirated copy.
