Blu-Ray and HD are fighty fighting right like a Betamax/Video stylee. That time the lower quality but better supported system (video) won.

I've heard that companies are lining up on the two different formats and also heard that porno studios have chosen one and it's said that THEIR choice of format will decide the winner. Which did they choose?

If you don't care then why post this :shifty: Someone who cares probably would have posted it eventually. The credit card reader isn't that bad sounding either. If your kid is stealing your credit card that is your own damn fault for leaving it somewhere your kid can get it and for not teaching your kid that stealing is wrong.

With all the stuff in the system the price is reasonable. Still expensive though. I will be getting a PS3 someday this year. Probably when Assassin's Creed or MGS4 comes out.

Having to pay anything for games post-purchase is my absolute biggest pet hate, and probably the main reason I have never ventured to buy various otherwise-awesome-looking online games.

That and the prospect of irritating l33t types.

I agree with CKN with regards to the fact that of course Sony will be putting their might being Blu-Ray and therefore the fact you're getting (what they think) will be a high quality next gen DVD player (Blu-Ray players currently extraordinarily expensive along with HD) along with a console, makes the cost make a little more sense, whether you agree with it or not.

Their thinking would be that when Blu-Ray becomes THE format, you've already bought one in with your console.

The difference between the PS3 and PS2 is that DVD had been around for longer before the PS2 used the format to play movies, while Blu-Ray is still brand new and therefore expensive.

For that reason, the cost of the PS3 is BOUND to drop rapidly over the next couple of years as Blu-Ray players cheapen.

Oh and I'd slow down on the Blu-ray purchases. Just some friendly advice.

Yeah, the Blu-Ray will die, definitely, but I'm still getting a PS3. Being honest, I don't care what anyone else thinks, even my friends think I'm a fool, but I plainly don't want a Wii, as I see it as more of a party console, and even the single player games don't interest me. And I don't want a 360 because I don't care about any of the exclusive games they have except maybe Halo 3.

The PS3 at the moment has a multitude of games lined up that 'I' care about. They aren't coming out immediately, but I can deal.

Fair enough. And the Wii is definitely a party system, I'm sure there will be quite a bit of good single player titles, but for the most part, it seems like it will be at it's best with three friends.

As for the Blu-ray/HD war, Sony seems to think that they were a big factor in bringing DVD to the market with the PS2, which is true. The PS2's DVD player was a big selling point. The problem is DVD was not a Sony-creation, Blu-ray is. And Sony has notoriously failed just about every time they try to introduce a new standard for something. Betamax, Minidisc, UMD, etc. They had the Walkman, which was a massive success, but they failed to adapt to the changing technology and Apple is handing everyone their ass now in portable music. Their track record is horrible and with them refusing porn, that's just the nail in the coffin. Porn drives technology, simple as that. Porn drove people to VHS, porn drove people to the internet, porn drove people to DVD and it will drive people to HD-DVD.

That is perhaps the smartest thing I've ever seen Zero say.

I'm not quite sure if that's something I want to be remembered by.

Often Sony's ideas are interesting and sometimes pretty cool. It's just that no-one else decides to bother supporting them cos of all the effort they have to make towards Sony. Y'know in a way Minidiscs were cool, you could record onto em, they were small, not supposed to skip....Great....Just a shame MP3s came out!

Also, UMDs are good for games (small, PS2 quality there or thereabouts and while flimsier than cartriges, can hold more info). Selling them for movies was stupid though cos although there were DVD players that would also play them those were a rip off and if I wanna buy movies I wanna buy them so I can watch them on the big screen.

What I AM starting to do though is rip my own DVDs down onto mpeg4 format to watch on my PSP which is GREAT.

To clarify, nothing against the quality of their ideas, it's just for whatever reason, they never catch on. I could understand refusing to allow porn to be distributed on Betamax, there were probably a lot of people that thought no one would buy home video porn. But to repeat that mistake again almost thirty years later? After watching how porn took off on VHS and how it helped make the internet the phenomenon that it is? That's just downright stupid.

Minidisc wasn't a bad idea at all, in fact they're still used pretty regularly by the broadcast industry, but people were really just starting to move on from cassette to CD, there was no way they were ready for another format.

And UMDs are pretty good for games, although due to their ability to pump out high-quality graphics, it makes load time a bitch. I don't know what the hell they were thinking when trying to make it a format for watching movies though.

I'm with Zero on UMD being a foolish choice for a movie format. With the trend leaning more and more to big screen HD home theater set ups UMD is pretty well useless. Very few people are interested in watching movies on a tiny screen. That's not to say everyone isn't interested...but you get my point. The fucking price is insane for a UMD as well, especially when a regular DVD movie costs less.

So basically what you've got is the majority preference for movies on a bigger screen...and a price point that even stomps UMD. Now I wonder why the fuck nobody would want to buy them? I'd love to hear Sony's logic on that one. Although I'm sure the Sony Spin Squad will twist things around at some point.

As far as Sony not wanting porn on their formats I can understand why. They want to distance themselves from the sex industry. Is it the smart thing to do? Hell no. Like Zero mentioned...porn drives technology. Where porn goes, people go. Seems like Sony are so full of their shit these days that they don't believe something like porn could overthrow any of their mighty products.

But hey...I'm fairly biased on any subject involving my old buddy Sony these days.

I've heard the extra price is partly due to it including a Hi-Res DVD player.

I don't have a Hi-Res TV.

Thus I don't need a Hi-Res DVD player.

Thus I don't want to pay £425 for what I will solely use as a games console.

I might get a cheap PS2 now though.

Nah, I just noticed that those who want the PS3 are those who *really* want it over the other two consoles, and are more apt to buy the console regardless of its price (hence Sony probably going screw it, we'll just kick it up). You're just the first name that popped to mind, having posted in this thread.
