The first five are finally up.

thumbsup.gif Sorry it's so cramped, I've tried putting gaps in but it ain't playing along, sadly.

With those comics that scored five points and lower, there are a lot of ties as most of them only got one vote. From then on, it's been easier to allot them their own place.

I'll probably set all of the posts out this way, with the links and (admittedly) sparse info and all that. I admit, I was going to read as much of the comics as possible and try to write a synopsis of sorts. I got about two years through Piled Higher and Deeper before I realised it was going to be fucking impossible in such a short time so, for the comics I haven't got prior knowledge of, I've just given my notion of what they're generally about. If I'm off the mark with your comic of choice, then I apologise now. I'm going to be away from my computer over the weekend, so the next five'll be up on Monday. Probably.

What it (seems) to be about: In the same vein as Axe Cop, only featuring a doctor that just so happens to be a ninja. And a 12 year-old boy that grows a large moustache "through sheer force of will". Goofy, but charmingly funny.

This is as long as the comic synopses will get, I promise. It's just that four of these five have 7+ year lifespans, so I felt they needed a little more. Plus, I really like Brawl In The Family

laugh.gif. I'll have the Top 10 over the next few days, hopefully. I'm looking to split it up into three posts in all - partly because I'm a right tease, but mainly because there's a couple of ties that I want to put in the same posts. So, I'll be going 10-7, 6-4 then 3-1 to finish off. Anyways, here's 15 to 11. Enjoy! And feel free to comment too. thumbsup.gif

Written & Illustrated By: Matthew Taranto

Active From: May 1, 2008 - Now.

Total Points: 6 points (2 votes - 1 2nd, 1 4th)

What it's largely about: What started off as a simple "What would happen if Kirby ate this?" comic has now shifted to encompass all things Nintendo - with Super Smash Bros. Brawl currently the main theme. Always ingenious, quite often cute and looking better and better with each new instalment, BiTF is, more often than not, a treat to read (especially when it involves Waluigi).

14

Written & Illustrated By: Brian Clevinger

Active From: March 2, 2001 - Now.

Total Points: 6 points (2 votes - 1 1st, 1 5th)

What it is largely about: One of the most famous webcomics on the list by far, this 9-year old (

huh.gif) sprite-based comic detailing the continuing misadventures of the Light Warriors from the original Final Fantasy is epic. I mean, really epic. At last count, it's up to 1223 comics, which is awe-inspiring really. What starting off as a parody of 8-bit video games now deals with most aspects of popular culture - even some of them new-fangled games too. Can be a bit hit-and-miss but, once you get to know the core characters, it can be hilarious.

Written & Illustrated By: Joey Comeau & Emily Horne

Active From: February 7, 2003 - Now.

Total Points: 6 points (3 votes - 1 2nd, 2 5ths)

What it seems to be about: A photograph-based comic that is, for lack of a better word, very arty. Covering themes like sexuality, accidents/disasters and zombies (thank you Wiki), A Softer World's tone reminds me a little of Pictures of Sad Children from the last post. It's quite sombre yet there's a strange, surrealist humour to a lot of what I've read of it. And freaky babies. Many freaky babies.

Written & Illustrated By: Tim Buckley

Active From: 23 October 2002 - Now.

Total Points: 7 points (2 votes - 1 2nd, 1 3rd)

What it's largely about: 90% of it is about video games - their composition, their idiosyncrasies and the people that play them. 10% of it is about miscarriages, saccharine "lol, relationships" fables and massaging Tim Buckley's fucking ego. In my wholly impartial opinion, if you can somehow manage to not pay attention to this 10% - plus the fact that his visual style hasn't really advanced that much over 8 years, the main characters are largely insufferable and Tim Buckley's general assbag-ishness - then laughs are there to be had, for sure.

Written & Illustrated By: Rich Burlew

Active From: September 30, 2003 - Now.

Total Points: 7 points (2 votes - 1 2nd, 1 3rd)

What it seems to be about: This polychromatic stick-figure webcomic (a rarity) is another one of the golden oldies. It focuses primarily on a party of adventurers attempting to live their lives under D&D 3.5 rules. Even though the humour can be pretty broad and there are a few fantasy fiction mentions in there too, it's largely for table-top roleplayers. Burlew knows his audience and caters for them very well. If D&D ain't your bag, then it's probably not for you. If you have even a passing interest in "tabletop roleplaying", then this (along with the Dungeon Master's Guide) could be your bible.

I like how the latest 8-Bit Theater up there pretty much spoils the way the entire plot of the comic ends right down to who the major bad guy is (which is kind of a plot twist) and how he ends up dying.

...You see, now I just feel like a douche. :(
