Real Madrid have announced the signing of Éder Militão from Porto, the 21-year-old centre-back becoming the first transfer since Zinedine Zidane returned to manage the club. Militão has agreed a six-year deal in readiness for his summer move. The fee for the Brazilian centre-back, who can also play at right-back and as a defensive midfielder, is believed to be €50m (£43.5m) after Real Madrid met a buyout clause which was set to rise by 50% at the end of the season.

A lot of money but Militao genuinely has the potential to be the best centre back of the modern era - he's got everything you want from a modern CB and bags of potential. He started out at right back but doesn't really have the mobility to do that role at the top level, so moving inside was a great move for him.

Skeptical. Pretty much every 'potentially world class' defender that has come out of Liga NOS in the last decade has ended up being average at best. Remember Mangala? It's easy to look world class when you only have to defend in four league games a season.

Who is no Sami Hyypiä

We've had some really good centre backs in our time....surrounded by a mix of some really bog standard and/or shite ones.
