Random Music Thoughts

I have discovered the VH1 Behind the Music about Chris Gaines is on Dailymotion.

I watched the pre-credits teaser and learned:

  • Chris Gaines was a sex addict. (who once had more girls than you could count in his hotel room!)
  • Chris Gaines took a chainsaw on tour once.
  • Chris Gaines' best friend died. According to Billy Joel (who is in the programme) Gaines and this guy "were like brothers".
  • And my favorite thing, even though I knew it already, Chris Gaines was "disfigured" in a car accident and this turned him into Garth Brooks.

And it just reminded me this photo exists (NSFW):

I just got turned on to Vanilla Fudge and their half-speed covers of well-known rock songs and this is extremely the fuck my shit.

That Ed Sullivan performance is psychadelic just for how crisp the footage is for something from 1967/1968. It's uncanny valley territory where I am not sure if this is some sort of contemporary recreation of it or the actual performance. My brain can't compute this footage is close to 45 years old.

I did not know how much I wanted a Bill Callahan/Bonnie "Prince" Billy collaboration until it happened.

They had been releasing videos for different songs over the course of the last year too. All of which I really like.

This is Burns night so you should listen to the album Homecoming - A Scottish Fantasy by Ayrshire’s own Nicola Benedetti to get you feeling all festive.

Not my cup of tea mate.

Okay go and listen to Untitled (Rise) by Sault

I actually listened to that on Friday and recommended it to my dad but I'll listen to their other album from 2020.

Did you like Rise?

Can someone help me think of some more songs kinda similar to "Ode to Billy Joe" by Bobbie Gentry?

Specifically, I guess the vibe I'm going for here is understated performances that are only accompanied by 1-2 instruments, acoustic guitar, etc. and have more of.. a forlorn vibe, I guess?

If you haven't heard "Ode to Billy Joe" (shame shame shame), here it is:

I think I will listen to it again.

Have you checked out any early Perfume Genius? Less country twang, but definitely got the forlorn vibe down pat.

What is your "they are fine" band. A band you can listen to pretty much everything they put out but you neither love or hate any of it, it's all just fine.

The Beatles honestly. Don't hate them, like them well enough, never hate hearing them, but really never go out of my way for them either.

Gorillaz.

I think they serve as a nice introduction to some genres when Albarn messes about in them, and Gorillaz put out a good single - but I'm not enticed with the 'mythology' of the band, nor do I think Albarn does much with his featured artists (like Mark E Smith, Lou Reed, Danny Brown etc).

Mine was the Arctic Monkeys. I think I have now listened to every one. Couldn't recall most of them would gladly listen again.

This could never be my answer. I really love their first record although I really couldn't care less about anything they've done since.
