A shortlist of 12 contenders has been announced for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2017 award.

They will go forward to a public vote on the night of the live show in Liverpool on Sunday, 17 December. The nominees are:

Elise Christie - Short Track Speed Skating; Sir Mo Farah - Athletics, Chris Froome - Cycling, Lewis Hamilton - F1, Anthony Joshua - Boxing, Harry Kane - Football

Johanna Konta - Tennis, Jonnie Peacock - Para-athletics, Adam Peaty - Swimming, Jonathan Rea - Motorcycling, Anya Shrubsole - Cricket, Bianca Walkden - Taekwondo

In addition to the main prize, there will also be seven other awards:

• Coach of the Year

• Young Sports Personality of the Year

Got to be Froome this year for me, bet he doesn't win it though.

I think Hamilton will win it unfortunately - but I'd rather Anya Shrubsole, who has been really quite good for the longest time - since making her debut for Somerset at the age of 12.

Jonathan Rea in second, because... reasons I guess. Northern Ireland voting reasons being the most likely.

Happy Mo won,  but neither Joshua or Hamilton in the top 3 is bizarre.

I felt like Mo was always gonna win it this year especially with him retiring. Still a worthy winner like tremendous athlete.

I'll be interested to see the full results breakdown. I wonder where Joshua, Hamilton and Froome finished.

Mo Farah deserves it, don't believe he's won it before has he? I'm glad Hamilton and Joshua didn't win.

I actually voted for Jo Konta but I knew she wouldn't win. I think Froome would have got my vote if not for recent events.

I agree that that probably ended his chances. I'd like to see where he did finish.

Peacock beat Joshua to 3rd by 18 votes! Tight.

I expect Froome would have made the top 5 if not for the salbutamol scandal. Jo came 11th, which also made me notice that all four women placed last in the standings.

I thought the women would be in the opposite order.

I'm glad but genuinely surprised that Hamilton didn't win for winning the having less mechanical failures than his teammate championship.
