Rise of the Independents October 23, 2004: Thug Wars

We’re on the air, starting right off with a match as we’ll see Dan Maff take on Mark Briscoe. These two have met many times in tag team wars but never in one on one singles action. Maff is 2-0 after relatively easy victories over Red and Ted Hart. Mark upset Samoa Joe but then fell to BJ Whitmer.

Dan Maff (2-0) vs. Mark Briscoe (1-1)

This match is action-packed and hard-hitting from the beginning. Maff uses his size and strength advantage to control the early-goings. He gets 2 counts after a butterfly suplex and a Cannonball in the corner. Mark comes back with a couple dropkicks and goes to dive at Maff but Maff catches him and fallaway slams him over the ropes to the floor! Maff then gets a run and dives through the ropes with a huge tope suicida on Mark! Then, in trademark Maff fashion, he whips Mark into the guardrail on all 4 sides of the ring! Back in he only gets a 2 though. He hits a stiff elbowdrop off the ropes for another 2. Maff goes for one of those half nelson suplexes but Mark blocks it and hits a back kick to the gut and a jumping heel kick to the back of the head followed by a springboard dropkick for 2. An enziguri takes Maff down and Mark goes up top. He comes off for a shooting star press but Maff gets the knees up! Ouch! He grabs Mark and hits a half nelson suplex but Mark GETS UP! He grabs Maff and hits an overhead Sambo suplex but Maff gets up from that! He ducks a swing and hits another half nelson suplex, dropping Mark right on his head! Maff calls for the end and goes for the Burning Hammer but Mark escapes and hits his Cut-Throat Driver, much like a Burning Hammer! He turns Maff over and covers, one, two, three! What a victory for Mark Briscoe, using basically Dan Maff’s own move on him!

WINNER---Mark Briscoe

*** ¼

Up next we have the Amazing Red, trying to break his cursed luck against big men in a match against BJ Whitmer. Red has lost to both Dan Maff and Donovan Morgan. Whitmer lost to Morgan as well but then came back with a win over Mark Briscoe.

Amazing Red (0-2) vs. BJ Whitmer (1-1)

Red is out first and as BJ makes his way out Red comes over the top with a sensational somersault plancha onto BJ! BJ gets up disoriented and retreats into the ring. Red hits a springboard clothesline for a 2 and a half already! We might have a huge upset on our hands here. Red goes for another springboard move but gets his head taken off by a huge lariat from Whitmer. BJ backs him into the corner and beats him down into a sitting position and then does some unique knee scrapes, like boot scrapes but using the corners of his kneepad, ouch! He pulls Red out and hits a suplex, holds on and hits a Northern Lights suplex for a 2. He goes for a Dragon suplex but Red is able to elbow out and hit a spinning front kick. He goes for a sunset flip but BJ stands his ground and then pulls Red up by his armpits and suplexes him all the way across the ring with a HUGE overhead suplex! The fans chant “Holy Shit” at that. BJ calls for the end but he can’t get the Exploder hooked and Red elbows BJ in the face. He then hops up and takes BJ over with the Code Red! One, two, thr..no!! BJ barely kicks out of Code Red! Red goes up top looking for the Infrared but he takes too long and BJ powerbombs him down! BJ picks him up, Exploder 98! One, two, three! BJ with the win, but it wasn’t as easy as he thought it was going to be!

WINNER---BJ Whitmer

Our next match should be a great technical match as Jerry Lynn takes on Matt Stryker. Jerry lost to his arch-rival AJ Styles before beating Trent Acid at the last show. Stryker has lost to both Acid and Homicide.

Jerry Lynn (1-1) vs. Matt Stryker (0-2)

These two great wrestlers start out their match both going for their signature moves but Lynn is able to escape the Death Valley Driver and Stryker gets out of the TKO and they both go for a dropkick and we are at a stalemate. Jerry takes control with a nice headscissors and a hurucanrana to take Stryker to the floor. Jerry hits a pescado and throws Stryker back in. He gets consecutive 2 counts with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker, a German suplex and an inverted DDT but Stryker is resilient. Stryker takes control with a Dragon screw leg whip and works over the leg with numerous submissions and wear-down holds. Stryker boosts Lynn up top maybe for a superplex but Lynn pushes him off and hits a missile dropkick but hurts his leg in the process. Lynn is still up first and gets a near fall with a sitout powerbomb. Lynn goes up top, maybe for that bulldog but Stryker runs up the buckles ala Kurt Angle but Lynn hits him in the gut and hits a bulldog off the second rope and they are both down. They get up at a 6 count, Lynn tries for the Cradle Piledriver but Stryker backdrops him and hits the Death Valley Driver! One, two, Lynn kicks out! Most of the damage was done to his leg so he was able to withstand the DVD. Stryker is visibly frustrated and goes for the Stryker Lock and locks it in! Lynn screams in pain but he is able to inch towards the ropes and finally reach them to break the hold! Stryker pulls Lynn back and again goes for the Stryker Lock but Lynn kicks him off. Stryker pulls Lynn up and tries to whip him to the corner but Lynn’s leg gives out. Stryker again tries to whip Lynn to the corner and the same thing happens. He tries one more time and is surprised when Lynn is able to run to the corner and follows him in but Lynn tips up and twists in mid air into a sunset flip on Stryker, One, two, three! The veteran pulls out the win!

WINNER---Jerry Lynn

*** ¼

Stryker can’t believe it, he thought he had the match well in hand but never count the resourceful Jerry Lynn out! Lynn gets to his feet and offers his hand in respect and Stryker hesitates but finally accepts in a great show of sportsmanship.

Backstage we see Homicide doing warm ups for tonight’s match when his opponent B-Boy comes into the screen. Homicide stops and stands up, staring right into his frequent tag team partner’s eyes.

Homicide: “Let’s do this shit tonight.”

B-Boy: “Hell yeah.”

They flash their hand signal at each other and B-Boy walks off as Homicide resumes his warm ups.

Back to the ring here as we’ll see a battle of finishers here as both men utilize a double underhook or “butterfly” piledriver as their finishers. It will Donovan Morgan’s “Sayonara” against Jay Briscoe’s “J-Driller.” However experience will certainly be a factor as well as Morgan is a veteran of many ring wars compared to the young Briscoe. Morgan has defeated Red and BJ Whitmer. Jay beat Ted Hart before losing to Samoa Joe.

Donovan Morgan (2-0) vs. Jay Briscoe (1-1)

Morgan uses the experience edge to maintain control over the less experienced Briscoe. He hits a back suplex and then a Doctor Bomb for a 2. He goes for Sayonara early but Jay twists out, ducks a lariat and hits a Yakuza kick! He hits a Falcon Arrow for 2. He goes up top but misses his Cannonball Senton and Morgan takes advantage with a suplex, holds on and hits a Fisherman’s suplex and holds on again to hit the Golden Gate Swing for a 2 and a half. He again goes for Sayonara but Jay backdrops him and goes for the J-Driller but Morgan reverses that into a backdrop of his own. Morgan then goes for another Golden Gate Swing but Jay twists around into a double underhook and finally hits the J-Driller! One, two, three! Jay Briscoe with an upset!

WINNER---Jay Briscoe

*** ½

Donovan struggles to his feet and stops Jay from leaving, Jay better be wary of a cheap shot here. But Donovan grabs Jay by the arm and shakes his hand in a rare show of sportsmanship from the veteran.

We then see a music video chronicling the wars that Xavier and John Walters have waged against each other in Ring of Honor, basically focusing on Xavier’s numerous cheap wins and especially on their brutal Fight Without Honor at Final Battle 2003. Tonight will be the end of their war in a 2 out of 3 falls match! Walters lost to Homicide before defeating B-Boy in what many are calling an upset. Xavier has lost to both B-Boy and AJ Styles.

John Walters (1-1) vs. Xavier (0-2)---2 out of 3 Falls Match

First Fall

The two rivals come face to face in the middle of the ring, staring each other down. Surprisingly nobody takes a cheap shot and they back off and circle each other. The first few minutes contains some nice chain wrestling, perhaps AJ Styles’ words to Xavier had more of an effect than we thought? Xavier hits a nice inverted Samoan drop to get the first major advantage in the match. He hits some jumping knee strikes to Walters in the corner followed by a nice slingshot knee to a seated Walters and then a powerslam for 2. Walters comes back with a Northern Lights suplex for 2. A back suplex and a backbreaker gets 2 again. He goes for an early Hurricane DDT which is a mistake as Xavier escapes and hits a brutal release German suplex. He goes up top, maybe for his 450 but Walters meets him up there and superplexes him! He grabs the legs and locks in the sharpshooter but Xavier is able to make it to the ropes after a few seconds. Walters grabs Xavier in a suplex position but Xavier hits a knee to the gut and the X Breaker out of nowhere and Xavier wins the first fall after about 8 minutes!

There is a 30 second rest period between the falls as both men, mostly Walters, regroup.

Second Fall

Xavier pounces as soon as the 30 second rest period is over and goes for Kiss Your X Goodbye but Walters escapes and hits a desperation Lung Blower, the double knees to the back, but he is too tired to make a cover. Walters can’t capitalize so Xavier is able to get back up and stay in control of the match. He hits a big gutbuster, maybe softening up Walters for either Kiss Your X Goodbye or else the 450 Splash. He hits a powerbomb, maybe going for that combo of his but as he lifts Walters up for that overhead flapjack, Walters locks in a triangle choke! Xavier is forced to put Walters down and he might tap but Walters almost gets counted out because his shoulders were down! He was able to get them up at 2 though and relinquish the hold. Walters then hits a nice German suplex with a bridge for 2. He hits a few forearms on Xavier and then whips him across the ring to the corner, Xavier tips up and over Walters, kick to the gut and tries another X Breaker but Walters rolls through and hits his Piggyback stunner! That gets a 2 and ¾! Walters senses the end is near and approaches Xavier but Xavier grabs Walters by the tights and propels him through the ropes to the floor. He baseball slide dropkicks Walters who goes flying into the rail. Xavier then hits his suicidal Arabian press to the floor on Walters! He goes for what looks like a piledriver but he gets backdropped on the floor by Walters! Walters rolls in, looking for a countout victory but he sees Xavier get up at 7. Walters then runs through the ropes with a tope! He tosses Xavier in and covers but gets 2 only. He then locks in the sharpshooter! Xavier is struggling, he should tap so he can save energy for the third fall! But he doesn’t tap and instead tries to reach the ropes, it takes about 45 seconds but he makes it, but the damage may already be done. Walters goes for a powerbomb or maybe the Hurricane DDT but Xavier holds onto the legs. Walters lets go and goes off the ropes but is met by a superkick from Xavier! Xavier then tries for Kiss Your X Goodbye but Walters escapes behind Xavier, turns him around and hits a Lung Blower to the chest of Xavier and then turns him around again and hits a regular Lung Blower to the back! He covers Xavier, One, two, three! Walters has evened the score at 1 fall apiece. We are going to a third and deciding fall!

Third Fall

Both men are slow getting up as the fans come to life and rally them to their feet as the 30 second rest period ends. They get up and circle each other and lock up as if the match is just starting. Xavier with a quick go behind and tries to get the surprise pin with several rollups. A schoolboy, a small package, an inside cradle, a Magistral cradle are all used but Xavier can’t keep Walters down for 3! Xavier runs off the ropes but Walters catches him on the way back and maneuvers him into an Octopus! Xavier is able to reverse into an abdominal stretch and then he lifts Walters from there into Kiss Your X Goodbye! He then pulls Walters close to the corner and goes up top and hits his picture perfect 450 splash! He covers, this is it! One, two, thr..no!! Walters stays alive and Xavier and the fans alike can’t believe it! Xavier pulls Walters up and goes for another X Breaker but Walters floats through, boots Xavier in the gut and hits the Hurricane DDT! He covers, 1…2…NO! Xavier kicks out of Walters’ finisher just as Walters did to Xavier! What is it going to take to put either of these men away? The crowd rallies behind them as they get to their feet and trade chops back and forth, Xavier hits a weak clothesline. He props Walters on the top turnbuckle and climbs up but Walters fights his way out and stands on the top rope and hits a sunset flip powerbomb off the top and then rolls Xavier over onto his feet and hits a second Hurricane DDT! He covers this time, one, two, three! John Walters has done it!

WINNER---John Walters

***

Walters gets up and the fans applaud the efforts of these 2 men. Xavier sits propped up against the turnbuckles and Walters nods his head at Xavier and leaves and the fans give Xavier, a man they usually hate, a standing ovation. He didn’t cheat at all in this match either, maybe a little bit of the old Xavier coming through as a man who can fight his battles without cheating.

Teddy Hart is backstage with what will no doubt be some interesting comments for a man he doesn’t particularly like, Samoa Joe.

Hart: “Samoa Joe, I can’t help that you’re a jealous man. Anyone can plainly see that you have a deep-rooted hatred for Ted Hart. Let’s go back to the beginning. Ring of Honor. The first ever Scramble Cage match. Teddy Hart and Jack Evans STOLE THE SHOW. And we get backstage and you have to have a little pussy fit because you can’t do what Ted Hart and Jack Evans can do. Can you do a double backflip off a cage? I don’t think so. And you go around preaching about respect and honor. Well Joe, all I see when I look at you is DISrespect and DIShonor. If you were such an honorable man, you would come up and shake my hand and pay your respect to me and my inhuman abilities. But instead you think you can tell me what to do, I don’t think so. People are saying that tonight I have no chance, that you are going to plow right over me easily. Fuck that. I’m gonna show you why I am the Canadian Superman and I’m gonna rip you apart “big man.”

Strong words from Teddy Hart but almost everybody is saying that he stands virtually no chance against Samoa Joe. Then again, nobody thought Mark Briscoe stood a chance either right?

Up next we have what I believe is a first-time ever one on one match in professional wrestling as Trent Acid takes on “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles. This one should be fast-paced and action-packed! Trent beat Matt Stryker at the first show before losing to Jerry Lynn. AJ has defeated Lynn and Xavier thus far.

Trent Acid (1-1) vs. AJ Styles (2-0)

This starts out with a big sequence of moves that ends with Acid hopping over a legsweep and dropkicking AJ right in the face! He tries an Irish whip, AJ reverses, leapfrogs Trent and then drops down so Acid can hop over him and then AJ springs up with a dropkick of his own, classic AJ Styles right there. AJ controls the first part with some interesting variations of gutbusters and backbreakers. Acid comes back with a Blue Thunder driver for 2. He goes for an early Yakuza kick but AJ sidesteps it and hits an enziguri to the back of the head! He goes for the Styles Clash but Acid pulls himself up and takes AJ over the top and to the floor with a rana! He whips AJ towards a rail but AJ hops over the rail and superkicks Acid when he approaches! AJ catches his breath and then tries to climb over the rail but Acid comes charging back with a Yakuza kick that sends AJ flying back into a row of seats. AJ is laying across 2 chairs so Acid climbs up onto the rail and dives off with a splash on AJ and the chairs! He grabs AJ and hurls him over the rail and then back into the ring where AJ kicks out at 2. He tries for a suplex or something but AJ goes up and over, hits a German and holds on but Acid elbows out of a second one, goes for a Yakuza kick but AJ ducks that, springs off the middle rope with a backflip and hits the inverted DDT on Acid in another patented move! Acid kicks out at 2 though. AJ hits a brainbuster and goes up top but Acid kicks the referee into the ropes and that causes AJ to slip and crotch himself and he tumbles down to the mat. Acid pulls AJ out of the corner and goes up top and comes off, rotating in mid air and splashing AJ, that’s the Bad Trip! One, two, thr..no! AJ gets his left shoulder up! Acid slams the mat in frustration. He gets AJ up, tries a whip, AJ reverses, misses a spin kick, Acid with a kick to the gut and then one to the face as AJ bends down. Acid then goes for a roaring elbow but AJ ducks that and hits his discus lariat! Cover only gets 2 again though. He decides to try for that crucifix DDT and lifts Acid up for it but Acid squirms out, off the ropes and goes for a Yakuza kick but AJ moves a little bit to the side and catches Acid’s leg and lifts him into perfect position for the...STYLES CLASH! He turns Acid over, one, two, three! AJ wins a great match to advance to 3-0!

WINNER---AJ Styles

Right onto our next match as the ROH champ Samoa Joe takes on the loud-mouthed Ted Hart. This should be most interesting! Hart is 0-2 after losses to both Jay Briscoe and Dan Maff. Joe is 1-1 after losing to Mark Briscoe but beating Jay Briscoe.

Ted Hart (0-2) vs. Samoa Joe (1-1)

Hart is out first to half cheers, half boos from the fans. Some fans are chanting “Joe is gonna kill you” but Hart just flips them off. Joe is out next but he can’t even make into the ring before Hart comes diving through the ropes with a tope suicida! He doesn’t even roll off Joe but instead beats down on Joe with a flurry of fists. He brings Joe over and slams his head into the guardrail! Hart then gets on the apron and hits a big top rope Asai Moonsault on Joe! He goes back into the ring and climbs up top and then comes off with a shooting star press on a standing Joe! He’s doing exactly what got him kicked out of the ROH locker room after Scramble Cage! He gets on the apron for maybe ANOTHER high-flying move but Joe trips him and he goes face first into the apron. Joe then hits a flurry of knees to the gut and then the Thousand Hand Slap~! And finally another knee to the gut for good measure. He takes Teddy and sits him on a chair as the fans start singing “Ole Ole.” Joe runs and connects with an Ole Ole kick! The fans on the other side of the ring start yelling “Over Here” so Joe obliges and eventually makes it all the way around the ring after 4 Ole Ole kicks total! Perhaps young Teddy made a mistake by showboating! Back in the ring, Joe snapmares Hart over, a kick and a chop to the back and then a kick to the chest and finally the kneedrop off the ropes! He covers but then immediately pulls Hart up, he ain’t done dishing out the punishment yet! He hits a German suplex, holds on and hits a Dragon suplex but still holds on and completes the Chimairaplex combo with the cross-armed German but he releases the bridge right away! He drags Hart’s almost lifeless body up and hits some stiff Kawada kicks to the face and chest and then destroys Hart with a lariat! Joe covers but again lifts Hart up before the count of three! He lifts Hart onto his shoulder maybe for an Island Driver but Hart escapes and superkicks Joe and takes the big man down! He goes up top and dives off, spiking Joe with that super DDT of his! He covers and gets a 2 and a half! He almost surprised Joe there! He catches Joe with a very Bret Hart-ish looking flying clothesline and goes up top and hits Open Hart Surgery, his version of the Spiral Tap! He covers, One, two, thre..no!! Joe kicks out but BARELY! Hart might win this! He goes back up top and goes for his Hart Attack Shooting Star Press but Joe moves out of the way and both guys are down. The ref gets to 8 and both guys are up and Joe goes for an enziguri but misses and Hart once again goes upstairs. He goes for another flying DDT but Joe catches him and plants him with an STO, almost putting him through the mat! He lifts Hart up and plants him with a running Muscle Buster that ended like a brainbuster, he might have broken Teddy’s neck! Joe then locks in the Choke and Hart was pretty much out anyways and the ref checks Hart’s arm 3 times but it’s academic and it falls on the 3rd time, giving Joe the victory, but it was harder than he ever expected!

WINNER---Samoa Joe

***

Joe takes a bottle of water and pours it on Teddy’s face to wake him up and Hart slowly gets up. Joe extends his hand for a handshake in a rather surprising move, given what has been said about each other by these 2. Hart looks at it and just flips Joe off and rolls out of the ring! He may have almost beaten Joe, ultimately being humbled, but he’s still an arrogant prick!

Now we have our main event and what a match it should be. B-Boy versus Homicide! These 2 won the PWG Tango & Cash tag team title tournament together but are no strangers to each other across the ring either. This one should be hard-hitting and intense! B-Boy is 1-1 after beating Xavier and then losing to John Walters. Homicide has defeated both Walters and Matt Stryker thus far.

Homicide vs. B-Boy

A nice 5 minutes of technical wrestling starts this one out, a little bit of a feeling out process until B-Boy opens it up with a stiff forearm out of frustration. That triggers an intense exchange of forearms. Homicide takes control after a couple of headbutts and T-Bones B-Boy over but B-Boy gets right up and hits an Exploder, Homicide with a 2nd T-Bone but B-Boy right back with a 2nd Exploder! Homicide goes for a 3rd T-Bone but B-Boy blocks, tries another Exploder but Homicide blocks that and dropkicks B-Boy and B-Boy rolls to the floor! Homicide comes running and hits the Tope Con Hilo on B-Boy! Back in, Homicide hits a quick Koji Cutter and a BRUTAL double stomp off the top for 2. B-Boy comes back with a sick-sounding palm strike and then a Siakolypse-like neckbreaker. He double stomps Homicide TWICE trampoline style and then hits a senton to end the combo and the fans are standing in applause. B-Boy gets a 2 count on that. He whips Homicide to the corner and hits a big running Yakuza-style kick to the face but Homicide no-sells it and hits a few forearms and whips B-Boy into a corner and hits his own Yakuza kick but B-Boy no-sells that too! Homicide with a headbutt and whips B-Boy to a corner again and runs in with a forearm and B-Boy slumps down into a sitting position, allowing Homicide to hit his running knee strike in the corner! He pulls B-Boy out and covers but B-Boy kicks out at 1 and gets right up, palm strikes Homicide, whip to the corner and his own running forearm and Homicide sits down now. B-Boy goes to the other side as the fans hit their heads with 2 fists in a tribute to B-Boy and B-Boy hits the running dropkick to the face, the Facelift, as an audible “SMACK” makes the fans groan and Homicide falls to the floor. B-Boy then runs and flips over the ropes with a somersault plancha of his own!

Back in the ring B-Boy gets a 2 count. He hits a Death Valley Driver for another 2. Homicide lands on his feet on an attempted German suplex and hits a Tenzan-style Tombstone piledriver but B-Boy kicks out at 2. He goes for a regular piledriver now but B-Boy lifts him into position where it looks like Homicide is trying a sunset flip and then B-Boy DRIVES Homicide down head-first! One, two, NO! Homicide kicks out! B-Boy calls for the end and hits the Cross Special Brainbuster! One, two, NO, Homicide drapes his foot over the bottom rope! B-Boy backs up and goes for a Shining Wizard but Homicide ducks it, runs off the ropes and goes a lariat but B-Boy ducks that and they both go for a Shining Wizard, B-Boy with his left knee, Homicide with his right knee and the 2 knees collide with a sickening crack and the fans yell and clap in support as both men clutch their knees. The ref’s count goes to 7 and both men stand up and go right back to trading forearms, B-Boy gets the upper hand and goes for a roaring forearm but Homicide catches the arm and goes behind B-Boy, lifting him and planting him with the Cop Killa DANGEROOOUUUUUSSSS!!! It’s over! One……Two……NO! B-Boy gets his foot on the rope! Homicide can’t believe it as he asks the ref about 4 times if it was 3 only to be told that B-Boy is still alive in this match! He winds up his arm, probably going for that deadly lariat of his and he runs off the ropes but B-Boy dropkicks the knees out and hits the Shining Wizard!! He favors his neck a little but finally makes the cover, ONE, TWO, THR..NO!!! Homicide kicks out of the Shining Wizard!! The fans are going nuts as they surely thought that was it. B-Boy lowers his kneepad but is rubbing his neck, it sure took a beating from that Cop Killa. He goes for the unprotected Shining Wizard but Homicide blocks it, goes for a lariat, B-Boy ducks it but Homicide is able to run off the ropes and take B-Boy’s head off with a second attempt! B-Boy landed on his neck again! Homicide rolls B-Boy onto his stomach and quickly applies an STF, wrenching back hard on B-Boy’s neck. B-Boy starts to crawl to the ropes but the pain is too much and he TAPS OUT! Homicide wins a hellacious battle and he is now 3-0!

WINNER---Homicide

**** ½

The fans give the 2 men a standing ovation and some chant “Match of the Year.” Homicide uses the ropes to hold himself up as B-Boy slowly gets to his feet as well, holding his neck. The 2 come to the middle of the ring in a staredown before shaking hands and embracing as the fans clap for them and the show comes to an end.

I was warned this would happen by grindyoursoul and I should have known but I am not getting too much feedback on my writing. Is there anything you guys would like to see different, do you like the match write-ups, are they too long, too short, just right? Thanks for any other feedback. Edited by darrdor

I'm not posting feedback due to everything being pretty good. There aren't any things that I see as something you can work on. Just keep up what your doing and everything will be good.
