I am seriously pissed off right now. Hawks were up 3-1 with 6 minutes to go, everything was good, but they end up losing 4-5 and lose Havlat to an injury.

How the fuck can this even happen?! Boucher was awful in the end and it was just a total collapse from the team. What fucking bullshit. I am going to go shoot people now.

Hawks have a real tough game tonight against the Stars. I can't see them winning this one. Hawks do real well with teams that rely on skill and speed, but as soon as a team starts taking the body, they are in trouble. The Stars have some of the best skilled grinders in the league.

Boucher is starting and I agree with that choice. There's a game against the Blues tomorrow and it's more important to save Khabby for that one instead of getting him shelled tonight.

I'm happy with 2 points from these back-to-back game nights.

How I hate the Blues... I hope Tkachuk gets his face busted in.

He is an great shape this season, so even if he does get injured, it's not because of that. Anyone can get injured in a freak accident, so that's a chance everyone who plays has to take, not just Havlat.

As for Theodore, he certainly didn't look good against the Hawks.

And Habs fans, don't be too upset. You're the only team so far that has been able to keep Havlat from scoring multiple points.

On topic of great guitarists, it's been 13 years since Criss Oliva passed away. Actually, the exact day was Tuesday, but still. He got hit straight on by a drunk driver on October 17th 1993 and died immediately. He was only 30 years old.

Malmsteen is hilarious in interviews. He's so fucking clueless about all other music happening. Always talking about Bach and Mozart and stuff. And if he does know the name of another contemporary musician, he is guaranteed to bash him. I'm quite sure he doesn't have any friends in the industry.

Now I did actually count, and I was way off. I only own 56/100. That's not even two thirds.

I like some bands with the dumbest names and images possible.

Case evidence, exhibit A, Cinderella:

Pictures and band names don't really say a thing about how awesome a band can be.

I don't mind people not liking Malmsteen for his guitar wankery, but I don't get all the haters saying he can't write songs for shit. He can write pretty good songs. It's often times just the execution, ie. the way he performs them (over-emphasis on solos), that turns most people off. I have a hard time getting through a Malmsteen album myself. But you can't really argue about his talent. A lot of it just seems to be focused on impressing other guitarists and not general listening audience.

And no denying George Lynch. The guy had perfect ear for a good melody and his solos were as awesome as anyone's, but with a certain sublety. Hard to explain really. The solos compliment the songs, and even when it's a less-than-stellar song, he can make it worth listening to. Not to say he wasn't flashy, no.

Wow, my taste in music must suck. And no, I don't own any mp3's. Aside from a couple demo/sample ones from never-heard bands I've downloaded and forgotten about.

None of those three are the 'best'. Greatest, maybe. Most legendary, definitely. Not best. Best implies they are technically superior to all other guitarists, which they are not. A lot of guys that weren't born when Hendrix was playing have built on his (and many others') legacy and innovations and are now better players technically.

I personally don't care that much about 'best' anyway. It's all about the creative force, in my opinion. I do like Satriani, Vai, Malmsteen etc to a certain degree, all respect to them (I own a couple of CD's too), but I tend to prefer guys with skill AND a killer tone and who play the guitar the way I enjoy hearing it.

My top ten favourites:

1. Criss Oliva (Savatage)

- the greatest guitar tone and unbelievable execution. Can make average riffs into great ones. Truly inspiring guitarist. One large reason the 'Tage is my favourite band ever. Great overall sound. And I adore the transitions from playing rhythm to lead guitar - you can barely notice, he makes the rhythm sound so inspired too. Who needs a separate rhythm player anyway? I realise I overrate him by putting him as #1, but it's my list. I loved him. Sue me.

2. Alex Skolnick (Testament)

- technical prowess can go well with thrash metal. Love him live, too.

3. Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple, Rainbow)

- Pioneer of the speed metal lead guitar. No need to explain why Blackmore rules.

4. Eddie Van Halen

- Wonderful guitar tone. Had his own thing. Over-the-top solos, but in an awesome way.

5. Alexi Laiho (Children of Bodom)

- Ridiculous solos, but the playing is real tight. I overrate him, but it's intentional. I just find it awesome how he incorporates old-school guitar wizardry into heavy metal of today.

6. George Lynch (Dokken)

- a lot of brilliant guitar heroes during the 80's glam metal movement, but none better than Lynch.

7. Jeff Waters (Annihilator)

- Great player with solos that compliment the songs perfectly. I mostly love him for the tone and riffs/songwriting though.

8. Jimmy Page

- From the original heroes, I rank Page slightly higher than Iommi, mostly due to the way Page goes wild at times and makes riffs sound more inspired and improvised.

9. Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society)

- last three albums have all been mediocre and it also reflects to his playing. But his Ozzy-era albums and early BLS had some awesome guitar playing.

10. John Petrucci (Dream Theater)

- not always a huge fan of how he tends to overdo the instrumental parts, but that goes for the whole band, not just for him. But you can't deny his playing and I enjoy it immensely. Not the solos as much as the general instrumental sections where he really shines.

Now this certainly doesn't mean a guy like Alexi Laiho is better or greater than Hendrix, Iommi or Satriani, but merely an indication of my taste when it comes to the greatest instrument man ever created (or was that the piano, I always forget).

What my point is, it's all opinions. Playing the guitar isn't a sport. If someone says Clapton is #1, you can't prove him wrong. Never trust majority opinions either.

Lately I've been on an Iced Earth binge. I don't know why. That's pretty much the only thing that stands out at the moment. I usually shuffle my CD's a lot, so I don't play same band albums in a row.

The other stuff? I don't know, the usual - Savatage, Maiden, Priest... but not more than one CD in a row.

Gave a spin to Iced Earth's Alive in Athens. Discs two and three, to be exact. Had both of them with me on my way to, and back from, school.

I have only one album in my house...

The Celtic Circle, and its the best.

5 games in, Martin Havlat has been the hottest superstar in the league.

Hawks up by two against the Avs after the first. Glad to see they've bounced back and are playing hard tonight. Now to keep it up. I'm also extremely pleased to see Dennis Arkhipov is a healthy scratch. Avs seem very undisciplined and Theodore isn't playing that well either.

An odd team Chicago has, to go out and beat a tough Nashville team twice, then drop games against both Blues and Blue Jackets, which I believe are both worse teams than the Hawks. And now again, playing well against Colorado.

I never really liked a Night at the Opera either. A bit too much pomp.

I have all Blind Guardian CD's (including both live ones, but not the compilation/b-side release The Forgotten Tales) and I've also seen them live. Awesome band indeed.

Here's how I'd rank their discography, studio only:

1. Imaginations from the Other Side (1995)

- best power metal album, and possibly the best metal album ever recorded. Godly drumming and guitar fills and song arrangements that make every song interesting, despite the progressive tendencies. Pretty aggressive release, but the medieval acoustic ballad Past and Future Secret balances that out too.

2. Nightfall in Middle-Earth (1998)

- confusing concept (and yes, I have read Silmarillion), but awesome songs nonetheless. Melodic and memorable.

3. Somewhere Far Beyond (1992)

- similar in style to Imaginations. Almost as good, too.

4. Tales from the Twilight World (1990)

- less refined when you compare it to later releases, but the melodies and songwriting are awesome again.

5. A Twist in the Myth (2006)

- a bit of a return to form for the band. "Otherland" and "Turn the Page" could have been straight off Imaginations album. There's a couple less than stellar tracks towards the end though.

6. Battalions of Fear (1987)

- really raw and thrashy, but the songwriting is there already.

7. Follow the Blind (1989)

- very similar, but not quite as strong.

8. A Night at the Opera (2002)

- I didn't enjoy the over-the-top instrumentation and production, but some of the songs are still alright, as evidenced by killer versions they play live. Love the drumming on the album, but the vocals are layered way too much.

I'm a huge Savatage fan, so it pains me to choose anything before their albums (especially before Wake of Magellan), but Blind Guardian's Imaginations is an epic heavy metal masterpiece.
