  1. I'm not sure it'll hurt the rating. People were planning on watching anyhow, planned their night around this - are they going to tune out because of no Ken Shamrock?

It depends on whether or not the novelty of Kimbo Slice alone is still enough to hold people's interest. It very well may be. But, if I was only a casual fan, I probably wouldn't bother with this show without Shamrock and the big main event.

  2. OK, sorry for making another post about it, but here's the latest from Meltz's play-by-play:

Nobody in the arena knows anything is wrong. Nothing has been announced. Apparently Slice's camp has agreed to the Petruzelli match and it's on. Nothing has been said officially though.
  3. From mmajunkie.com

NOTE: The night's scheduled main event between Ken Shamrock and Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson has been scratched due to an injury suffered by Shamrock, according to EliteXC officials. Currently, no official announcement has been made regarding a potential replacement fighter or replacement fight.

Damn. I was really looking forward to this, too. Well, for Elite's sake, I hope there's some opponent for Kimbo that's halfway-decent. Otherwise...it's done, Gus.

  4. OK, I'm pretty sure this should go in this thread.

    Meltz is now saying this:

As of 7 p.m. Eastern time it looks like Shamrock has been cleared and the main event is back on. If anything changes,we will post a new update.

Here's a question, can anyone think of a time when a main event was in jeopardy like this 2 hours before the show started?

  5. The full situation, according to Meltzer:

Shamrock suffered a cut in training, and although he still wants to fight, the Florida commission doctor is holding things up. The fight's been on and off a few times. Frank Shamrock volunteered to take the fight, but because he hadn't been training, the commissioner said no to him as well.

    Should be an interesting night.

My god. What a bad ass.

  6. R.I.P. EliteXC.

An undisclosed injury has forced Ken Shamrock out of his "EliteXC: Heat" main event bout with Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson just hours before the heavyweight clash was set to air on network television.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has confirmed with EliteXC officials that Shamrock suffered an in jury within the past 24 hours and will not be able to compete in tonight's main event.

EliteXC officials are scrambling for a last-second replacement to fill in for Shamrock against undefeated Ferguson.

The Shamrock-Ferguson fight was set to headline the third installment of CBS' "Saturday Night Fight" series. Tonight's event takes place at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla.

The 44-year-old Shamrock, who has not registered a win since 2004, last appeared in action in a March Cage Rage event. Shamrock suffered a first-round knockout in that affair to Robert "Buzz" Berry.

  7. I don't like it. I can't stand it. Lesnar has fought 2 fights in the UFC, losing one. Sure, he's talented/has potential and he's coming off a victory, but in no way should be in a title fight already. It's degrading to the other fighters in better situations.

Why? And just what other fighters deserve title shots in the Heavyweight division? And if they do, would they be marketable?

It's all about MONEY. UFC is a BUSINESS.

No shit, no need to say it like you're talking to a moron.

Sure, UFC is a business and about money, but it is also a sport. This has always been a sport, from day 1. Right now Dana is doing with Lesnar what he snarled at Elite doing with Slice.

I apologize if I offended you, but from your original post, it seemed as if you didn't understand how MMA promotions make money.

If you have a fight like this in the making you need to sacrifice some of the 'pure sports' aspects. For example, Fabrico Werdum vs. Couture would perhaps be more legitimate from a sporting sense, but from a business and interest level is far, far, far, far beneath Lesnar vs. Couture. Therefore, anyone who would run Werdum vs. Couture, when the Lesnar fight is RIGHT THERE, is an idiot. Especially considering Randy's age.

And, as everyone else has pointed out, Brock is far more legit than Kimbo Slice. Brock has actually competed with serious competition. Kimbo has yet to really fight anyone who, on paper, would pose him a serious threat (though Thompson almost had him beat).

Just look at the IFL. MMA fights, by themselves, don't sell. If they did, they wouldn't need countdown shows and charismatic fighters.

  9. But at the rate at which Lesnar is improving its hard to say how good he'll be by November, not to mention he's got dozens of tapes to study of Couture whereas Randy will struggle to know a lot about Lesnar other than his wrestling, both being from a similar background.

That's what's going to be interesting though in my eyes, that everyone will struggle to call it. It's a one off scenario that isn't seen very often at all in MMA. Aging (not that you'd know it) Legend against Potential World Beater. No-one's sure how the fight will go or be approached, not even Randy himself yet if you listen to his Q & A. Biggest UFC Heavyweight fight for a looong time I think.

This is probably the biggest fight out there at the minute for casual fans.

Nah, this is big to everyone except the Sherdog morons who scream 'FEDOR FEDOR FEDOR'. This fight will be far bigger than Couture/Fedor would be.

Sadly for UFC, I think it's official that no one cares about any shows from then until now including this next season of TUF.

  10. 2. You want to rag on the season modes of SmackDown games? Sorry, but what? I'd give anything (well, within reason) to have them stop doing the sort of season modes they're doing in SVR and are doing in this game, and go back to the Season modes of Smackdown 1, 2, JBI, SYM & HCTP. Honestly, I'd 100% rather have them code a shitload of differant stories without voice overs and cutscenes, as opposed to doing about 10 total with voice overs.

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!
  11. A source close to Randy Couture has confirmed today that Couture is in negotiations with UFC for a new three-fight deal which would end the nearly nine month legal battle between the two sides.

If the deal is closed, and the source said they are hoping to conclude negotiations and announce the match sometime within the next week, Couture would face Brock Lesnar on 11/15, most likely in Portland, Oregon. There are still minor problems involving tax issues that have kept finalzing the Rose Garden as the venue on that date, but UFC sources on Thursday expected the deal would conclude.

Couture was said to be hoping that if everything went well, the next two fights could involve Fedor Emelianenko, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and/or Chuck Liddell. However, all the previous hang-ups involving Emelianenko and UFC remain.

It had been rumored heavily the past few days about a Couture vs. Lesnar fight in Portland, as a one-fight deal to settle the legal issues. But the talks involve a contract where both sides would expect Couture to legitimately retire as a UFC fighter.

Lesnar vs. Couture?! Oh heck yeah~!

EDIT- And holy shit about Halifax being on that list....maybe now UFC will come here (:shifty:)

  13. You don't waste time on a fight card with "get to know the fighter" segments. People are not going to turn in for that, they just want the fights. UFC doesn't do it and they don't have trouble drawing in fans. The only place they do it is the "countdown" shows. If EliteXC wants to showcase personality and getting to know their fights, that really is the only way to do it.

OK, but what are the video packages that air before every UFC fight on the main card with the guys hyping the fight? That's the kind of thing I'm talking about, getting the people hyped for the fight. If you just throw two dudes out there and say "Let's get it on", no one will care. If there are fighters people know and care about, they will get into the fights. Looking at this card, there are no fights anyone but the hardcores will care about, with the dubious exception of the main event, as none of these guys (well, perhaps Nick Diaz) have been established on previous shows.

When you speak of a Countdown show, I sort of agree, but it would be much more difficult for EliteXC to get a countdown show due to the fact that CBS would probably never air one and on Showtime, it would get crap ratings, rendering it pointless. With UFC it's a lot easier, as Spike caters to them.

Plus, UFC has an established legacy, with fighters with extensive histories and reputations. With the exceptions of Kimbo and perhaps Gina Carano, EliteXC has none of that and are a relatively new company. This greatly increases the importance of hyping your fighters as something special. Otherwise, why bother with EliteXC when you can just watch UFC?
