  1. I heard about someone trying to pick up the rights for a sequel a while ago, it seems that someone has gotten them and 2 days ago announced something that sent multiple orgasms through me.

More than a decade ago, LucasArts was practically synonymous with quirky point-and-click adventure games. And few were more beloved (or quirkier) than Sam & Max Hit the Road. Based on the underground comic Sam & Max: Freelance Police, the game's then-impressive graphics, timeless whimsy, and senseless comic violence made it popular among adventure game players.

Long-standing calls for more adventure gaming fun starring the duo have yet to be fully answered, but indie developer Telltale Games last night announced that it has acquired the rights to the careless crimefighters and will be creating all-new adventure games based on the exploits of the canine-lagomorph tandem. Few details are available at the moment, but it has been confirmed that the games will be released in an episodic format.

A Telltale spokesman couldn't give specific details on release plans or pricing for the new Sam and Max episodes, but he did say that it would roughly follow the model used by the company's first such effort, Bone: Out from Boneville, available from the Telltale Web site starting today. Based on Jeff Smith's independent comic, Out from Boneville provides players with an estimated four to six hours of gameplay for $19.99. The Telltale team created the new Bone game from scratch in roughly a year, which should give Sam & Max fans some idea of the turnaround times Telltale can accomplish with its episodic business model.

Demand for a sequel to 1993's Hit the Road went unheeded for quite some time until 2001, when development studio Infinite Machine, led by former LucasArts employee and Jedi Knight designer Justin Chin, announced that it had obtained the license and was working on a Sam & Max game for next-generation consoles. The unbridled joy of the duo's small-but-fervent fan community was not to last long, as Infinite Machine folded shortly thereafter.

Sorrow turned to elation once more in 2002, when LucasArts announced that it had begun development on a proper sequel to Hit the Road. Along with Full Throttle: Hell on Wheels, Sam & Max Freelance Police was intended to represent a return to LucasArts' adventure game roots. However, the emotional roller-coaster ride continued for Sam & Max fans, as LucasArts never did get back to its roots, canceling the game in March of 2004. (Hell on Wheels had been canceled months earlier).

At the time, LucasArts said it would not be laying off any staff as a result of the cancellation, but key members of the Freelance Police development team left later that year anyway to start up Telltale Games, dedicating their new studio to the long-languishing genre of the point-and-click adventure game.

  2. What a predictable response.

Hell, I don't really care. You can't really judge a controller until you use it really. My first impressions were "What the fuck" after reading the article I ended up thinking "It could work".

I like the fact that Nintendo are the only company that really seem to give a shit about innovation in the next generation and attracting the non gamer crowd. They have attracted this crowd fairly successfully in Japan with the DS, this seems like the next step in that direction.

  3. You're right, he does look a lot like him, can't believe I didn't realise that before.

Its just that his body language reminds me of Kuja. Which like I said, is a very good thing. Kuja was a fantastic villain, a much deeper character than Sephiroth. And he rode around on a huge dragon. Kick ass.

  4. Just got the game today, thank you very much Gameplay.com delivering me games a full day before their official release.

Anyway, the only thing i don't like about it so far is the way the conversations are set up. Its essentially a fight against time, which I don't really like to be honest.

  5. Of course there's a story to it. Kadaj, Loz, and Yazoo are searching for the kids affected by Geostigma and the remains of Jenova to bring about another Reunion to "get back at the planet" for hurting them. Sure the film focuses primarily around Cloud, but that's because he's really the only of of the group that is affected by what is happening thanks to his connection to them. Then it changes slightly when the end comes around and instead of getting back at the planet, they (or he mostly) want to continue what Jenova used to do before and use the planet as transport to find other worlds to have their way with.
  6. Well its been released in Japan. US date has been put back till the winter. European date until something within the next 15 years is a good estimate.

And its been leaked onto the internet before that. Which I have on my computer and have watched twice now.

There is essentially no story. Well there is, its just very poorly told and merely an excuse to show off, I must say, some absolutely gorgeous and amazing looking action sequences. Characters from FF7 are more or less reduced to cameo roles with the exception of a few. Aerith/s role feels like something that had no thought behind it. Theres still no real closure on a lot of stuff. Reno and Rude are reduced to poor attempts at humour.

Kadaj is a very cool villain I have to admit though. The action sequences, I adore, they are mind blowingly amazing. Some suprise appearances from certain characters are admirable as well.

Overall, I think that the movie is quite good really, despite the faults. It doesn't work very well as a sequel to FF7, but as something that you can just sit back and watch, its actually quite good. Ignore the story, or lack of, and just watch Cloud just generally kick massive amounts of ass.

Im not disappointed, Square have several games in the pipeline that should provide closure on a lot of details that I feel should have been in the movie, so that doesn't bother me much. It just something thats very hard to not be impressed with because of the visuals and the action.

  7. lanky316 speaks the complete truth. Thats why I am happy that Creative Assembley are now in the hands of Sega, so that the bug ridden mess that is Rome Total War might actually be fixed.

And I have no doubt that The Movies will be a disappointment. I think Lionhead have a shitload of good ideas but are poor in implementing them.

  8. As far as I know, it was meant to be Aerith as it was an anagram of "I Earth" which fits in with Aeriths role in the FFVII universe.

It was corrected for Kingdom Hearts and stays the same in Advent Children as far as I know. Other than that, I still prefer Aeris, but I like the fact that Aerith has its own meaning.

  9. I care about season mode enough to skip out on Smackdown VS Raw because it sucked. Considering that its the backbone of every Smackdown game if you want to simply play it by yourself, im sure that im not the only one that thinks this way.

They've added all of the old belts? Who really gives a fuck about those? A few extra textures. Yeah, I can feel the £40 jumping out of my pocket in anticipation of this revolutionary new edition in the Smackdown series.

Smackdown games have become like an EA sports game franchise. Every year theres a new one with a few minor improvments. You would have thought that with the amount of editions there have been that they would be the best games in their genre right now. Instead, every year theres enough room for meaningless aesthetic improvments and tiny steps in the right direction followed by a few bigger steps backwards. Quite frankly im getting bored of playing whats essentially the same game every year.

  10. I've been playing the PC demo for a while now.

Wow, I really like the idea of the game, the multiple path idea is a really nice one. I like the sort of mini game thing going with the methods of carrying out the tasks as well.

I just hope the rest of the game is as open as this.

Its been getting really good reviews as well.
