  1. If RATM, I wouldn't want Metallica too.

    I figured

    RATM/Metallica

    Kanye West

    Foo Fighters

would have been the most likely choice. Although I could easily have seen the Killer as well.

If those horribly shit rumours do come true, I'm glad I'm waiting till I'm at Uni before I bother going to a Leeds.

Kanye is an interesting choice that I hadn't contemplated. I don't expect it though. I just have thoughts of 50 Cent's attempt at Reading and think they'd veto it.

Plus, Metallica and Rage are doing Rock AM together, so I could see Reading bring them together with QOTSA possibly under Rage (another rumour there for you).

Here's the current rumour list, so as you can see it for yourself:

    Main Stage

    Friday 22 August

Rage Against The Machine - to be confirmed

    Saturday 23 August

    The Killers - strong rumour

    Avenged Sevenfold - strong rumour

Blood Red Shoes - to be confirmed

British Sea Power - to be confirmed

    Broadway Calls - strong rumour

Cut Off Your Hands - rumour

The Metros - to be confirmed

    The Subways - strong rumour

    The Wombats - strong rumour

    Velvet Revolver - rumour

  2. bwahha, not in the million years would the headliners be that. No way. If they are I'll just permanently leave the board because that's just... comical.

    Not to mention very shit.

The rumoured headliners are Rage, Killers and Metallica. Slipknot and A7X would be under Metallica on the Sunday. Rage are all but confirmed, Metallica are doing summer shows in Europe and The Killers.. are just the biggest rumour next to the Foos, and I just can't see them doing it when they're headlining their own big shows.

Makes sense though, since the headliners have all been confirmed as American.

(Interestingly, according to Efestivals, Slipknot are only rumoured for Reading, whilst Velvet Revolver are also a rumour, although that in itself is something else because apparently VR are close to splitting)

Bare in mind the word I use repetitively though: it's all rumours until later this week.

  3. Really? I think some of his lyrics are atrocious. Not all of them - I'm not saying that he's a bad writer because some of his stuff is cracking. But he's also had a lot of, IMO, stinkers and especially with his newer stuff, I think he more suits offering his talent to a guy like Saul Williams who is possibly (I'd move the Earth to argue for it) the best lyricist of our time.

I mean, it's a moot point when Ghosts is entirely instrumental but I prefer songs with lyrics as a general rule (unless, as I say, it's background music), but even as a NIN fan, I don't buy into the "Trent is a genius" garb.

  4. I'm actually a huge Manson fan. I worshipped him as a child and still hold him in high regard. I just don't think that his cover versions are as good as a lot of people make out. But then I also refuse to buy into AS being his greatest album like most do (I'm a MA/EMDM guy). So take that for what it's worth.

  5. This is the first time in four years I'll be giving Download a miss. I've seen Prophets, Incubus, HIM, JEW, Alter Bridge and Simple Plan before. I love Jon Davis but I love him for Korn, not his own work. I have no interest in Kiss, Offspring, Priest or anyone except for Disturbed and Kid Rock, and two bands aren't worth my money, especially at such a steep price.

I think I'm gonna roll for Reading instead. Rage Against The Machine are pretty much to be confirmed, with Metallica, A7X and Slipknot as strong rumours (and Dizzee Rascal - a guilty pleasure). But I promised myself that only two bands would sway my vote this year: RATM and AC/DC, and I don't see any Highway To Hell at Download, so it's Reading for me.

  6. My current favourite tracks, and they'll change next week, no doubt...

Armand Van Helden - "I Want Your Soul"

Always loved his work, and this is one of the more catchier that he's done recently. Not a patch on "U Don't Know Me", but as close as he's ever gonna get.

    Radiohead - "15 Step"

My favourite song off the new album so far. The first 40 seconds are probably my favourite of any song right now.

Foo Fighters - "Cheer Up Boys (Your Make-Up Is Running)"

Possibly the best chorus ever. I don't know why though. It sounds simple enough, and the lyrics aren't exactly ground-breaking. But it's so damn catchy, it just makes me feel warm inside.

    Also...

Queens Of The Stone Age - "Sick Sick Sick"

Rage Against The Machine - "Wake Up"

Alter Bridge - "Ties That Bind"

KoRn - "Bitch We Got A Problem"

  7. You have some good qualities within the diary. I like the backstage stuff, and you write well for certain people, especially Kanyon. The layout is easy on the eyes, and at the very least, you have a direction for the company, which is better than most. So it's not all bad at all.

    However...

-- Your Big Bang PPV was like a REALLY long Nitro. I almost thought it would never end by the time we got to Totally Buff/Konnan/Roaddogg. You booked it like it was a TV show. An PPV opening with a promo? Doesn't fly, really. Plus, surely you'd have booked matches on the website or something to at least get the internet fans to purchase the PPV. It seemed too much work to just book so many "on-the-fly" matches and I don't see how many people could have realistically bought the PPV with so little announced, if anything at all.

-- What's with the obsession of using things that came in the future? It just shows a lack of creativity, IMO, if you have to resort to coming up with "Planet Jarrett" which was never used in WCW, nor until around 2003/2004 in TNA. Johnny Stamboli? He never used that name before. Why the change? "Live Krew"? What reason did Konnan have to team with Roaddogg? Why "BG" James? I know he used it in the future but surely you could have been a little bit more inventive (BG James isn't the best name as it stands even today). It irks me when people do that.

-- In one show, you have Kidman attack Helms backstage. On the next show, there's not even a mention of it at all. Helms just congratulates Tajiri and says everyone else should earn it. After a backstage attack, personally, I'd be angry and want to address it.

-- I don't like the overpush of Doring or RVD. If RVD debuted in WCW in real life, his reaction, much like it was in WWF, would be average at best until he went into the ring and did his thing. But yet he debuted at Big Bang and got an unjustifyable pop, IMO. If thats just how the game simulated it then my apologies, but that's just unrealistic to me. Ditto Doring, who was a nobody at the best of times, let alone in a bigger company. I don't see how so many people would have understood the "Meat" reference to Stasiak either. Most WCW fans at that point probably wouldn't have known much of Stasiak's past, let alone about that nickname. I sense it would have gotten the "Sid/Scissors" reaction.

There are a few other bits as well that I just don't like, but as I said, you have a direction for it and hopefully you'll be able to take that direction and do something positive with it. You have a strong talent pool to work with so there's no reason why you shouldn't do well with it. Needs a little bit more work though. Just because it's WCW, doesn't mean you need to fall into their trap of lacking logic or continuity.

  8. Raw Review:

-- Always good to kick off a show with the champion. Funnily enough, I'm watching an old 98 Raw and it starts similarly. Makes me feel all Attitude'ed. Anyhoo, the HHH promo was decent. It was too generic for my liking, but HHH himself is a pretty generic promo so it evened out. Heel Taker is great and I hope you run with the possibilities there. It's a shame that Flair had to interupt and ruin it, but I'm sure you have a decent name in mind. The promos were all generic, but they served their purpose.

-- I misread the intro, and thought that Maven was out to face molestation. I'm almost disappointed that I read it wrong. Anyhoo, the usual overbooked Hardcore match, which is nothing bad. Far from. Nice to see Justin Credible in the hunt - he was always vastly underrated I felt.

-- Boo to the massacre of the "Fired" gimmick. I don't see how Steph serves any purpose on the show, and she even said herself she's been fired twice now. What's the point? She should have remained gone.

-- Lesnar squashes make me happy. Anyone getting squashed by a monster makes me happy.

-- The nWo segment was funny. Nice to see Nash steal a Joey Styles line. I also like they're they're focusing their efforts on Hulk Hogan. Shame that Hall didn't speak more, but he was merely an afterthought at that point. Hopefully you can do something with him.

-- The Dudley Boyz segment was interesting. It came off more ECW-ish than normal WWE segments do. Not that its a bad thing. It adds to the realism, and Bubba was beliavable in talking of the second chance they had received.

-- The Bra and Panties was what it was. Cool to see Rikishi returning to his roots. By roots, I mean his post-Sultan roots :)

-- The Intercontinental title match was very good. It made both men look competitive, and didn't really harm Matt in the long run. The Taker attack was out of nowhere, but should have been expected. Unpredictable, in a good way.

-- The main event match was odd for me. The write-up was good, and the match itself seemed solid. It's just wrapping my head around what the main parts of the show are supposed to be. Undertaker, Kane, nWo/Hogan, Austin etc. There's a fantastic top-line there, but I'm curious as to their placings and such. I guess it's a good thing, and you have enough talent to work with. Loved the Hogan attack. Anytime Hogan is beaten up, I smile inside.

-- Quick nitpick: TNN became SpikeTV in 2003. Aside from that, the contract signing was as expected with Austin remaining on Raw. I like the way it played out though, with the nWo almost forcing his hand. You can imagine Vince somehow being behind it, if the "poison" storyline is still in place. It did what it had to do - kept Austin strong, and made him the brave soldier facing the enemy. Now I expect nWo vs. Hogan, Austin and Kane, which would be huge, especially for the Hogan/Austin interaction.

The show was strong, and progressed a lot of bits. It's a shame that HHH didn't get much time, but if he's facing a SmackDown guy at Backlash then it makes perfect sense to put your main focus on Raw's own feuds, particularly with the nWo. The Lesnar push didn't need changing, and you didn't do so. The RVD/Taker feud had been done, but I expect an IC title feud between the two would be very interesting. The only downside, really, was the Stephanie angle. It's just typical WWE to waste a stipulation like that. I know that was probably the aim, but you showed that you could mix things up with the Dudley promo, so why not here where it mattered more?

    SmackDown Review:

-- Again with the Triple H intro. I will say, don't overkill it. The last thing you need is the same promo opening TWICE a week. Once is enough. The Jericho interuption was a letdown, but expected. I don't know if it's the way Jericho prounounces it or not, but it's Aitch, not Haitch. Or so my English teachers always told me, anyway. I didn't expect The Rock to intervene, mostly because I completely forgot he had signed to the brand. Again with feuds we've already seen here. I loved the Jericho/Rock feud, but it's been done.

-- Glad that Trish won the #1 contender match. Ivory and Jacqueline are awful. Just so bland and boring.

-- Interesting that you've pulled the Canadians stable out early. Lita/Jeff will be very interesting, and I'm sure you'll play on it at some point.

-- Mark Henry owns all. I'm always happy to see him pushed, especially over Staziak. Surprised he wasn't fired by that point.

-- Jericho/Flair interaction was realistic. Not much else to say on it, really.

-- I like the idea of the mid card feud you have going here, with Hardy and the Canadians. It's obvious that he'll recruit help at some point, but it'll be interesting to see who. I can see one immediately that springs to mind, but it's the third guy that has me a little iffy in terms of not knowing.

-- Random attack on Spike Dudley makes me happy again. It's nice to see Billy and Chuck given a little air time, and it makes sense since the Dudleyz issued their challenge on Raw. A nice spot of continuity.

-- The usual WWF-style cruiser contest. Crash is too WWF-ified a worker to have decent cruiser matches to the level that we know, but he lost so its ok. Tajiri makes me happy as champion.

-- The Booker/Angle skit was great. Typical goofy Angle. The Bob Zombie and orgasm references were great, and you're obviously foreshadowing to the hair vs. hair match.

-- The tag match screwed over my prediction on who was gonna team with Jeff Hardy. Oh well. Cool to see Show get a little bit of a monster push, but he deserves more in my opinion, especially since SmackDown is less top-heavy than Raw. The Edge/Angle feud is fine, but Booker/Show? Not very interesting, sorry to say.

-- More HHH is a good thing. I thought you'd nearly forgotten about him. The sledgehammer spot was slick, and Jericho needed it in fairness, since the WWF had killed his title reign. Going crazy on HHH and Rocky was great. Certainly makes him look strog for a rematch. It's just a shame that I still don't yet believe he's strong enough for you to put the title on him. The ending is intense, and very close to a sledgehammer spot I've ALWAYS wanted to do, only not quite. Still, a great climactic SmackDown.

Both shows made good movement in building the main feuds leading into Backlash. You differentiated the small feuds from the ones that'll make PPV and there's a lot of great stuff there to make Backlash worth watching.

  9. The logo is hilarious. Is it me or does Doug have a fantastic handle-bar moustache going?

Graphics-aside, the show was good. I'm glad that the focus is on the in-ring action rather than elsewhere. I know you have your non-wrestling bits, but they seem to be well done, and not a detriment to the product. The one problem I always had with FWA in real life was that their backstage vignettes and interviews were terrible. They killed the product dead, and much like shows such as LDN right now, British wrestling thrives more on the mat work than it does the mic skills, which for the most part are non-existant. The use of Burchill is good, since you need to keep him strong. I'd have probably resurrected the old videos of him killing people like FWA used to do, unless I've missed you do them, but the fans need to know that this guy was a WWE guy to get them interested, and you do that well with the interview.

My only real critique is having two gimmick matches on the same show. Unless the show had a special attraction label to it, which the opener suggests against, I think it seems like something you could have thrown out for another week, instead of overkilling it.

Otherwise, some good stuff. I'll definately read back to catch up on what I missed, and will keep my eye on future results.

  10. THE FINALISED LINE UP FOR NO WAY OUT 2002

    THREE STAGES OF HELL MATCH

    Test vs. The Undertaker

(The First Fall - Singles Match; The Second Fall - Street Fight; The Third Fall - Ambulance Match)

I want The Undertaker to win. Personal preference, really. I like Test, but I don't think he's the guy to put over, especially with Taker.

    WWF CHAMPIONSHIP 2-ON-1 HANDICAP MATCH

The Rock © vs. Vince McMahon & The British Bulldog

Although it's probably better to have a face and heel go over in the top two matches, I'll take a wild stab in the dark and say that The Rock OVERCOMES THE ODDS~~!!!

Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Kane (w/Paul Heyman)

I like Austin, but pushed right, Kane can do big things. Austin doesn't need a win here.

Kurt Angle vs. Rob Van Dam

The pattern here is personal preference, so I'll say RVD.

    WWF HARDCORE CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH

Key (w/Charles Wright) © vs. Sabu

I'll be honest - I haven't read far back enough to find out who Key is, yet he seems to be one of the more noticable names on the roster. So I'll go for him.

TRIPLE THREAT MATCH FOR THE WWF WOMENS CHAMPIONSHIP

Trish Stratus © vs. Jazz vs. Daffney Unger

Ahh, Daffney, how I love you. I think at least one title should change hands, and Daffney is the love of my life. So I give the nod to the screamer.

    Edge vs. Lance Storm

Let's get some Storm love. The numbers suggest a Storm victory.

    PLUS THE RETURN OF DX!!

    WWF HEAT MAIN EVENT

    Funaki vs. TAKA Michinoku

I'll shoot for Funaki, not because I like him more, just because it seems to be the best payoff, all things considered.

  11. And I'm allowed to state that you should go away because I personally feel that this diary is nothing more than comic relief for the minority and should be treated as such.

And in order to stop this post from being nothing more than post whoring - I liked the show-long storyline with The Miz. I don't think anyone on the planet likes him, and you have a use for the Spirit Squad, which is more than what WWE seems to have these days. Kelly and Candice should never be treated as anything more than eye candy and as sexual objects, so they're being used fine. Anything involving Little Bastard and New Jack is always going to be hilarious, and the write-ups are easy to read. So for now, until it is closed, I'm enjoying it. I'm just interested as to whether these feuds will run from show to show or just randomly change as you go along. It'd be a challenge to have things so out-there being used continuously with actual PPV build and such geared towards any payoffs you may have lined up.

  12. If I were to go to the Carling Weekend, I'd go to Leeds. Reading was far too full of university kids and the generic "indie" fan look that just made it unenjoyable for me. I just couldn't enjoy Marilyn Manson surrounded by people who just didn't appreciate or understand his music or persona at all. Plus, I couldn't stand through a whole weekend of bands like Franz Ferdinand, Artic Monkeys etc. I need headbanging, moshes, air guitars, and combinations of any or all of them.

By all accounts, Leeds seems/sounds a hell of a lot better for atmosphere.

  13. Only one Axl moment at Birmingham last night. He started shouting mid-song telling security to "calm the fuck down" as they got heavy-handed with a crowd-surfer. He had a go at them, and then had them all ejected from the line. I have the video of it - might upload it to Youtube if they accept .avi

An absolutely fantastic moment, and a tremendous gig - great crowd, the band gelled well, Axl was joking and talking all night, and his voice was superb.

  14. Well I enjoyed reading your diary, off the wall as it was. Though if you ask me, you kinda screwed up with Raw, I mean WWE would lose thousands, maybe millions of fans by screwing up that. The network would more likely dump you for doing what you did, because it was lying to their audience and it could also lead them to avoid other shows on the network.

  15. Armageddon Card

Eddie Guerrero - Never liked Big Dave as champion, and it'd be a fitting tribute to see Eddie win since he was supposedly going to win the belt on the day of his death.

Christian - Personal preference, really. Could half see Daniels winning it, though.

Undertaker - As much as I love Orton, I can strongly see/want Ken Kennedy winning his match, so I'm merely balancing the face/heel divide

    Ken Kennedy - Read above

Paul London© - Just makes sense to me, I guess

AJ Styles and Rey Mysterio - Unless it's pushing a feud forward, I see the babyfaces winning

The Cabinet - Toughie, but seems to be the way forward. JBL holding the belt could actually boost the division, but we'll soon see

Jerry Lynn - Debuting superstar, needs the win more
