Werder Bremen Sign Brazilian Diego

For the coming season 2006/2007, Werder Bremen have secured the services of Brazilian international Diego from Portugal's champions FC Porto. The 21 year old midfielder has signed a deal to keep him in Bremen until 30.06.2010. The announcement was made by general manager Klaus Allofs on Saturday evening: "We are delighted to have such a quality player here at Werder. Diego is an exceptional talent." Trainer Thomas Schaaf said: "We've had an eye on Diego since 2002. He is technically fantastic, plays excellent passes and likes to look for the goal. He has exactly the quality we need moving forward."

Last Thursday Klaus Allofs and Werders chairman Jürgen L. Born travelled to Portugal: "We agreed on terms with Porto and we had already almost settled with the player. Both parties wanted to get together - the fact that signing on the dotted line took a little longer is quite normal." Diego himself travelled to Bremen on saturday with his father to undergo the obligatory physical. Both sides decided to keep a lid on details of the transfare fee. "We are not entering a a new financial dimension with this deal", explained Allofs.

Diego Ribas da Cunha, short Diego, was born in Ribeirao Preto/Brazil on 28.02.1985 and played there in youth teams between 1997 and 2004 before winning the Brazilian championship with Santos FC. Diego moved to Porto in 2004 and picked up a championship winners medal last season. He played eleven games in the Champions League and scored two goals. So far the young midfielder has played 14 times for the Brazilian national team but has yet to score an international goal. Diego won the 2004 Copa America with the Selecao.
