One day after being told to think long and hard about the possibility of leaving New Japan and pro wrestling in general, Akebono called a press conference today to make his intentions official. Akebono's last professional wrestling match, for now at least, will be at the 2/18 Sumo Hall show. A return of course is always possible, and Akebono has already been told that should he choose to return he will be welcomed back with open arms. Akebono said that he has appreciated everybody's help and support from his tenure in New Japan Pro Wrestling, and said he does hope to return when he feels the time is right. The 64th generation Yokozuna also said that he has already personally requested that his farewell match be against his mentor and frequent tag team partner, Riki Chosu, but the match has not been made official yet.

More contract talks, with Yuji Nagata who signed today without hesitation after his match with Kurt Angle was announced two days ago. Nagata once again had very few words for the media, but did say that he is very close to announcing who his tag team partner will be, and that it will surprise the whole world. The big American Giant Bernard also signed a contract today, guaranteeing that he will be with New Japan Pro Wrestling for at least one more year, showing his dedication to the company. Togi Makabe who has had some very strong showings over the past few months apparently received a big pay raise, and Koji Kanemoto, who spent most of 2006 as the IWGP Junior Heavyweight champion signed with no problems. Thus far, signing season has gone extremely smoothly, especially when compared to last year.
