Luis Figo has confirmed that he will not play again for Portugal, with the Real Madrid winger feeling that his nation's defeat to Greece in the final of Euro 2004 represented his last act.

Figo had announced before the final that he would certainly retire in the event of victory, but the shock defeat to Greece caused a rethink.

Although he was tempted to stay on hand help his nation's attempts to qualify for the next World Cup in Germany, Figo has decided to retire.

This will allow the 31-year-old to concentrate on his club career with Real Madrid this season, although he has hinted that it could also be his last campaign with the Spanish giants.

Figo amassed 110 caps for Portugal during his glittering career, scoring 31 times.

The winger played in every game for Portugal as they hosted this year's European Championship, overcoming early criticism to play an increasingly vital role in the latter stages.
