  1. Shouldn't be too hard... I have most of my CDs catalogued and rated so I can quickly see what I have. Live albums and compilations are excluded.

'68 to '79 I'll just do one per year.

1968 / The Beatles - The White Album

    1969 / Led Zeppelin - II

    1970 / Deep Purple - In Rock

1971 / Black Sabbath - Master of Reality

    1972 / Uriah Heep - Demons & Wizards

1973 / Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon

1974 / Blue Öyster Cult - Secret Treaties

    1975 / Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow

1976 / Blue Öyster Cult - Agents of Fortune

1977 / Judas Priest - Sin After Sin

    1978 / Van Halen - VH1

    1979 / Judas Priest - Killing Machine

Wasn't as easy as I thought. 1978 was especially difficult. Van Halen's debut came out the same year as Rainbow's Long Live Rock'n'Roll and Judas Priest's Stained Class. That's tough. Could have gone either way. Priest still dominated late 70's.

80's I'll make into a top three per year because there was just so much more metal and rock that I liked.

    1980

    1. Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell

    2. Judas Priest - British Steel

    3. AC/DC - Back in Black

    1981

    1. Black Sabbath - Mob Rules

    2. Rush - Moving Pictures

    3. Saxon - Denim and Leather

    2. Savatage - Gutter Ballet

    3. Axxis - Kingdom of the Night

Real awesome years. Lots of terrible omissions. Metallica almost made it to my list in '86. 1980 was loaded with awesome albums. Including two by Saxon. And dammit, Rage's Perfect Man suffered from being released in '88.

Actually, I have time and I own so many CDs from the nineties, I reckon I'll make it a top 5 from now on.

    2008

    1. Jon Oliva's Pain - Global Warning

    2. Circle II Circle - Delusions of Grandeur

    3. Testament - The Formation of Damnation

  2. Err... most of my favourite bands?

For instance, my top three bands:

I got into Iron Maiden around 1994. That was 14 years after their debut album. I got into Judas Priest something like 1997 and that was 24 years after their debut. Savatage came maybe 1999. Over 15 years late, and only two years before their final album (don't think they'll be recording anymore).

Don't even get me started on Led Zep, Deep Purple, Blue Oyster Cult, Uriah Heep and such...

  3. Just picked up the new Testament album, the Formation of Damnation. Got the version with the bonus DVD.

I'm not a huge thrash metal fan, but I do like the old Skolnick era Testament. When the band was more technical and frantic thrash and not the brutal 'wall-of-noise' Testament of the latter years. Picked this up for nostalgic reasons mostly, because Skolnick is back with the band and the last I saw them live they sounded good.

Didn't even give it a listen yet because I'm watching hockey, but I will soon. I now have all six of Skolnick's Testament albums. And the album he did with Savatage. Does that make me a fanboy? I suppose it's more like I'm a fan of anything Savatage-related.

Speaking of Savatage, I also got the new Circle II Circle. Same thing, didn't listen to it yet. Got the limited edition with a bonus track and a video.

  4. In the past ten years I've been to more than a dozen festivals and at least a hundred club gigs. I don't know if it's feasible to list all the bands I've seen. Actually, I doubt I could even remember half of them, but it's mostly hard rock and heavy metal.

Right, so it's impossible to make a complete list, but it's Friday night, the old lady went to bed early (mad at me for something I did this morning) and I'm drunk, so I decided to try. And at least you'll see a good portion of the bands I've seen.

  5. In the past ten years I've been to more than a dozen festivals and at least a hundred club gigs. I don't know if it's feasible to list all the bands I've seen. Actually, I doubt I could even remember half of them, but it's mostly hard rock and heavy metal.

  6. People are clearly letting the fact they're fans of the band titlt their views of things.

    I'm not a fan.

Sure, I own one CD (VH-1, from '78), and they could possibly rank in the bottom half of my top 100 favourite bands if I ever made such a list, but that's just because I have respect over their talent and interest towards similar music.

  7. Wow, I'm not the only one who likes Axxis?

I'd like some Back to the Kingdom songs, but otherwise a good set.

EDIT: the old "festivus for the rest of us" thread and my festival post:

    Iron Maiden | Judas Priest

    Dio | Testament

Blind Guardian | Savatage | Iced Earth

    Skyclad | Axxis | Pink Cream 69

Not in order of preference, but an order I could realistically see these bands billed. Angel Dust would have definitely been on the list, but I suppose they are not really that active anymore. At least not with Dirk Thurisch. Savatage is probably the same, but replace them with Chris Caffery if you want to nitpick.

  8. So I'm sorry, but Van Halen doesn't qualify just because you hear Jump more than their other hits.

If you're going to list Van Halen, then I'll counter with Led Zeppelin, as I'm sure there are a lot of people who unfortunately only know of Stairway to Heaven and Kashmir.

Deep Purple with Smoke on the Water or Black Sabbath with Paranoid?

  9. Van Halen was not a one hit wonder. Their debut album was a milestone in heavy metal and helped pioneer glam metal. Perhaps the best album of the 70's. Running with the Devil and Ain't Talking 'Bout Love are still played on the radio. And that was way before Jump or Panama.

  10. Iron Maiden's The X-Factor.

    200px-Iron_Maiden_-_The_X_Factor.jpg

One of my all-time favourite albums, but it was certainly not well-received by the general audience. The biggest reasons must have been the change of vocalists (Blaze Bayley replaced Bruce Dickinson), and that it didn't sound like what people knew to expect from Maiden. It was slow, brooding and with long intros. Very difficult to approach. But to me, the X-Factor is a dark masterpiece, a work of art with some of the best ever Maiden tracks, such as the Edge of Darkness, Fortunes of War, Look for the Truth, the Aftermath and Sign of the Cross. A brilliant album. A+.

  11. I prefer Peter Gabriel era Genesis. By a wide margin, too. Only thing I didn't like in the early Genesis albums were the lyrics, which I never quite understood, but the music was brilliant.

It wasn't like Genesis sold out, the music was still good after Gabriel left, but it took a different direction without him, into something like consumer good as opposed to the art that it used to be.

  12. This thread is kind of difficult for me. Not because it's difficult to come up with cover versions that fit the description, but because I'm a huge fan of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest and keep buying tribute and cover compilations by a bunch of no-name groups that think they can do justice to Priest and Maiden classics. I wouldn't even know where to start. Maiden must be the most covered band in the world.

Here's a good list of Maiden tribute albums. I've managed to hunt down a significant amount of them, and I genuinely like a lot of the songs on a lot of the compilations, but there's at least 50 or so cover versions I could list that should not have been recorded.

  13. Chuck Berry (rock'n' roll guitar)

    Elvis Presley (the king)

    The Beatles (Beatlemania)

    James Brown (the grandfather)

Led Zeppelin (Plant, Page and Bonham all hugely influenced how rock music would be performed in the years after)

    Black Sabbath (heavy metal)

David Bowie (I was going to put KISS here, but I think Bowie had a bigger influence on glam... or maybe T-Rex)

Michael Jackson (the music video era, dance moves)

    two more... eh

Bob Marley (for all the potheads)

The Shirelles (the vocal group thing that came big again in the 90s - see boy/girl bands)
