The last 5 minutes really confused me for continuity reasons, hopefully it's explained in the next episode.

Is that footage of the Abomination/Wong fight old? It'd have to be, right? Bruce's arm was fucked up still in the post-credits scene, and it's fixed by the time we see him in Episode 1 of this. Plus Wong took Emil back to his cell after their fight. I don't know, I'm a little confused with that, Jennifer's reaction makes it seem like the fight is recent, but it couldn't be. Maybe Emil escaped, again? Someone helped him?

Oh and they're totally going to introduce Skaar in this show, aren't they?

I do like it when these shows/movies have little world building bits, like how do the Avengers survive if they don't get paid for what they do. F&TWS brought this up too. I mean, none of them are POOR, but they aren't Tony Stark rich either. I wish we could get a definitive answer for stuff like this, lol. Although, with Ms. Marvel introducing Marvel branded merch during the AvengerCon episode, my head canon is that they license their image to companies, like Marvel, and make money that way. Toys, comics, shirts, book deals, TV appearances, etc.

    Spoiler

I believe the reporter called it "leaked footage" not a live feed or something even recorded recently. I'm assuming we'll see that it happened in the past due to the timeline issues and was just recently leaked to the media just in time for his parole hearing.

I did kind of expect all the stories to come together in some fashion, but I really enjoyed it.  I'm just not sure if I am crazy but the Gamora Thanos-Killer and Hulk Buster Stark part... that was never an episode right?  Like I have no recollection of it and do not see an episode I missed.

    About that

    Spoiler

Originally What If was supposed to be 10 episodes but one episode had to be cut due to covid related production issues. It would appear the Tony/Gamora episode was probably that one. Supposedly it'll still happen in season 2 but it's a little jarring sure, but otherwise I'd say it was an excellent finale.

Who was in the HYDRA Stomper armor in the mid-credits scene, Steve? He never turned back up after he went missing in episode 1, right?

    And about that:

    Spoiler

Yes, all signs point to it being Steve..

And continuing that in a different spoiler bracket as it's a theory about season 2 related to this:

    Spoiler

Popular theory is Steve will be that universe's version of the Winter Soldier in Season 2.

Alright that episode was a fucking BLAST, holy shit.

Darcy marrying Howard the Duck, Captain Marvel vs Thor, cameos from Grandmaster, Korg, Nebula, Drax, some Skrulls, Rumlow/Crossbones, etc. Loki as a frost giant.

Then that final few seconds. It's leading into the next episode about what if Ultron wins - and his plans for the vibranium android body aren't interrupted. And he has all of the Infinity Stones?!?!? Shit is gonna fucking slap next week, goddamn.

I think Ultron with the Infinity Stones is how we get the Guardians of the Multiverse, and it might explain why Gamora is wearing Thanos' 2014 armor. Maybe Ultron killed Thanos?

I actually thought it was one of the more meh episodes.

    Quote

I mean all the cameos were great and especially enjoyed Darcy once again popping back into the MCU for these Disney+ shows. But just the overall the story just wasn't as interesting to me. As with most of these, the ending left me excited for more, however.

  4. I can somewhat understand the criticism of episode 1 being "boring" though I personally enjoyed it but also think it's the weakest of the episodes. I think each episode progressively got better than the one before it, though a lot of people criticized episode 3 (though I was a big fan of it personally).

  5. Black Widow thoughts:

    Spoiler

I went in with pretty low expectations and felt the movie exceeded it. I mean it's not top 10 MCU film but it's in the top half to me. I also appreciated the spy feel and the fact that it was more grounded than most MCU movies.

The whole "there's no stakes" because we know her fate as an argument against the movie drives me crazy because you can say that about probably every MCU solo movie. Does anyone walk into a Captain America or Iron Man or Thor moving thinking there's a realistic chance Cap, Stark, or Thor is going to die in it? There's usually an upcoming Avengers movie we know is coming. Hell, we knew there was a Spider-Man sequel coming out so when Peter gets dusted in Infinity war, we knew he was coming back. So to dock points from this movie because we know Natasha isn't going to die or something seems silly to me.

I knew Val was showing up again in this movie (or was supposed to make her first appearance technically) and figured it would involve recruiting Yelena but was surprised to find out she was already working for her. Crazy to see an end credit setting up a TV show. But I am definitely excited about where this probable Thunderbolts story is going.

  6. Adding on to this.

    Spoiler

The images also showed Scott Lang as blipped during that same scene, when he was just missing because he was in the Quantum Realm. If Sharon had gone off grid in Madrapoor, she was for all intensive purposes missing and they would just assume she was blipped.

My take on the whole Sharon Carter thing

They tell us she got Blipped, but how do we know for sure?  She seemed to be pretty high ranking as far as SHIELD agents go, probably only behind Fury and Hill (I'd list Coulson, but we all know AoS doesn't count).  I might be remembering it wrong, but the only confirmation we got was that screen in the Avengers HQ that listed her as MIA.

Is it really outside the realm of possibility that she took "Half of all life on Earth getting dusted" as a chance to disappear and re-make herself as the Power Broker in the 5 years it happened?

  7. Felt like it was a "good not great" episode of a "Good no great" show, which is fine. It was a good origin story for Falcon as the new Captain America and I enjoyed getting more character from both him and Bucky.

As for some thoughts about the future

    Spoiler

Continue to feel the vibe of Val recruiting for a new team with connections to both U.S. Agent and Zemo now.

The End Credits tease could certainly foreshadow a Season 2 but I could also see it be leading to Armor Wars since she walked about how the tech at her disposal now...presumably stuff like Starks' tech since that show probably is going to center around that tech being in the wrong hands.

  8.

    Thoughts on the episode first:

    Spoiler

Overall, I felt this episode was a big step back after how intense and fast paced the last couple episodes, it was a bit jarring to go back to this episode 1 style pace.  And I absolutely hate the boat storyline as a whole. I get the character work they're trying to do but there had to be more interesting ways to go about it.

It's not all bad - the showdown at the start was fantastic. The JLD part was shocking but also good and intruiging. The Zemo/Bucky moment was also a bright spot along with the Isaiah Bradley scene of course.

    But that damn boat....

Also Sharon Carter bringing back George St. Pierre's character is a curveball - if she is the Power Broker, why is she now helping the Flag Smashers...something isn't adding up with that, but I assume the motives will be revealed next week.

    Now for the cameo theory:

    Spoiler

I agree, Val is definitely recruiting and it's very reminiscent of Fury showing up to recruit the original Avengers.  I imagine we're going to see her in a similar capacity in Black Widow for perhaps Florence Pugh's character, again just theorizing here...but I am buying into the Thunderbolts theory and the she is working with General Ross to recruit their own "Suicide Squad-esque" team.

  9. Finale thoughts:

    Spoiler

Was I slightly disappointed there was no cameo from Dr. Strange or anyone else...sure, but I'm not going to let what would've been probably a 30 second cameo take away from what was an amazing show with amazing story telling. After last week, I already could tell the ideas of the multiverse theories were just fan theories running wild...and had accepted it because in the end, as a stand alone story - it was great.

6 months ago, I gave absolutely zero fucks about Wanda and Vision. Today, I was tearing up watching the hex come down as Wanda realized what she had to do...the added character development was just amazing and I dare say Wanda is now one of my favorite characters in the MCU.

So that feels like it all but confirms that they're going to be tapping into the spiderverse.

Either that or the entire film will be Peter Parker stuck in customs having lost his passport.

Could also have to do with being framed at the end of Far From Home - he literally can't go home because he's a wanted man.

So I'm rewatching Buffy The Vampire Slayer for like the millionth time and I decided to check to see what Alyson Hannigan was doing now.....only to realize that she's going to be 47 years old this year. How fucking old does that make me feel.

Also apparently she's just doing a Penn & Teller Magic competition show and some small side gigs here and there.

She's also going to be in a Disney+ movie that comes out in February (I believe) about a super powered squirrel that also has Danny Pudi and Ben Schwartz!

AIM is involved.  Their members often look like beekeepers and they use the hexagon a lot, which is the shape that pans out to at the end of each episode

    Spoiler

That's certainly a theory I've seen, but the fact that the Beekeeper has the SWORD logo on his outfit suggests that he at very least isn't related to AIM. I also think at this point bringing back the villainous group from one of the weaker MCU movies that hasn't really been mentioned at all since then wouldn't make much sense.

  14. Ah, well that definitely makes more sense because if the Yahoo article had been accurate, I would've 100% thought Black Widow would be destined for Disney+ as well.

But I agree that Black Widow has a higher chance of being successful due to the fanbase and Mulan had a lot of backlash on it both politically from China and critically.

I'm just going through some real MCU withdrawal right now....can they at least confirm some release dates for WandaVision and Falcon & The Winter Soldier...

  15. How well Mulan did depends on what source you look at but last week Yahoo Finance was reporting that it 1/3 of all US subscriptions purchased Mulan and that was something like $261M so far conservatively, and that was just US purchases. Everything I've read on Disney's side is that they have been very happy with what Mulan had done (now critic reviews are another thing).

That being said, I feel like if it was truly successful, they'd be prepared to run with Black Widow on the platform. I would've definitely purchased Black Widow or any MCU movie On Demand, so I'm pretty disappointed in this news.

  16. VOD also has the added benefit of being available for 48 hours so you can watch it as many times as you want instead of having to pay for another ticket if you go back the next day to see it again - a rare occurrence for the most part but some people were watching End Game multiple times in theaters in a short period of time.

Honestly, I've been saying for a couple years now I would pay more than $20 for VOD if it was a movie I really wanted to see because my wife and I never have time to go out and when we do not only do we fork out the 12 bucks a pop for a ticket (more depending on the theater we go to), but we're also paying at least 10/hr on babysitting too. So $20 for a VOD rental from the comfort of my own couch is a steal for us. I'd love to see this adopted more so I'm thoroughly on Universal's side here.

Yeah, I lost mine when I was 9 and the ending definitely got me pretty good too.
