  1. Has anybody here read the 1984 book Wiseguys by Nicholas Pillegi? That's what this movie was based off of. I do notice they changed a few of the names (i.e. Paulie's real last name was Vario, not Sicero), and kinda glossed over some of the key points in comparison.

Awesome movie, though. I do have a funny story about the book version.

I actually did a book report on Pilleggi's book. (If I could find it right now, I'd probably be able to spell homeboy's name correctly). You don't know how funny it is to say "motherfucker" in class in 8th grade, and the teacher couldn't say shit because I was quoting the book.

    Good Times.

  2. In any order:

    1. Michelle Branch

    2. Neve Campbell

    3. Halle Berry

    4. Alison Hannigan

    5. Jennifer Aniston

    6. Mandy Moore

    7. Drew Barrymore

    8. Hilary Duff

    9. Jennifer Garner

    10. Natalie Portman

  3. It's either #2 or #3 all time in the US, either before or after Thriller. The alltime best selling in the US is currently The Eagles Greatest Hits.

Thats The Wall not Dark Side Of The Moon. Its number 3 too. Dark Side is in the top 25 though.

  4. It holds the all-time record. What helped the album sell so much, moreso than any other factor, was the engineering. In it's time, it was THE album to buy if you wanted to show off the new top-of-the-line stereo you just bought. If your record had a scratch on it, you'd buy another one. That explains the huge spike in sales once the CD format was introduced.

  5. Just a few:

Brian Wilson- Smile (of course), and Getting in over my head. Imagination was okay, but the production and the mix were sterile.

Stone Temple Pilots-Purple, Tiny Music, and Shangri-La Di Da

Syd Barrett- The Madcap Laughs and Barrett

Sectret Machines- Now Here Is Nowhere'

More as I begin to wake up...

    *dies*

Syd Barrett is a God among men, and I want his babies. Barrett is one of the best album's I've ever heard. Much love for "Smile" too!

  6. The title pretty much says it all, but I do need to make one thing clear. I'm NOT talking about duets; I'm talking about an out-and out collaboration, i.e. Jack White with Loretta Lynn, where the two artists make a cohesive statement rather than just a one-off song for novelty purposes.

For me...I'd love to see Scott Weiland (Velvet Revolver, ex-Stone Temple Pilot) collaborate with Brian Wilson. I already know there's a few whose jaws just dropped and begun shaking their heads in disagreement. However, this paring would make more sense then you'd first believe. And, no, this wasn't just brought on by the fact that the two were part of the all-star rendition of Across the Universe at the Grammys.

    Let's compare...

Brian Wilson formed the Beach Boys with his two brothers (Carl and Dennis), his cousin (Mike Love), and a high school buddy (Al Jardine). The Beach Boys were huge from the moment they started (first album, 1962) due to Brian's creative arrangments, which set them apart from other groups. Their first few albums were standard as far as sound/style, but they were popular. Brian began using drugs, which *initially* resulted in more mature, sophisticated music-compare 1966's Pet Sounds to the surf stuff- but soon led to addiction, and deterioration (I probably mispelled that, but I can't sleep and I'm tired). Brian's voice went from a smooth tenor to...well...by the mid 70s, he sounded completely different. His voice had become hoarse and gravelly (cocaine and chain-smoking will do that to you). Plus, he gained a hell of a lot of weight. Despite that, he created some really terrific music that was actually far better than the Beach Boy's most famous material(which, of course, didn't sell as well). He drifted in and out of the group, but didn't go solo until 1988,by which point the Beach Boys were nothing more than an oldies group. Over the past couple of years, he has overcome his past demons (he got off drugs in 1983, but other shit kept him out until 1998) and rebuilt his career, including winning his first Grammy this month.

Scott Weiland formed Stone Temple Pilots with some friends (including two brothers), who released their first album in 1992. They were huge from the moment they started, despite sounding like a lot of other groups at the time. Weiland's drug use (joined by the DeLeo Brothers) *initially* resulted in them becoming more creative-compare 1996's Tiny Music to Core-but led to, well...all of us know Weiland's legal history  . That said, their music became *much* better than the more well-known "grunge" material. Which, of course, didn't sell as well. Weiland was in and out of the group, cutting his solo album in 1998.Drugs tunred Weiland's voice from a growl into a frail tenor. STP split in 2002, in which they admitted they were afraid of becoming an oldies group. Weiland got with Velvet Revolver, and won his first Grammy this month.

Okay, some similarities there, but nothing to write home about. Well, as a fan of both artists (to the point where I have everything recorded by both, and not all official :shifty: ), there's more to it. If you listen to Weiland's solo album, there are several songs where he *sounds* like a young Brian Wilson. Heck, even on some STP albums there are some, like "And So I Know" off of Tiny Music. In fact, Weiland has said that the final STP album, Shangri-La Di Da, was inspired by listening to Pet Sounds religously.

I saw Brian in concert in October with my best friend, who's into stuff like Marilyn Manson. You know what? He *also* pointed out the similarites between their styles. Hearing Brian in person sing uptempo material...maybe it was just the show I went to, but he even *sounded* like Weiland does on his slower songs.

So, I think it would work (providing Weiland stays clean). Both are different in the ways that would lead perfect to collaboration ;Wilson writes great music, but usually uses a collaborator with the lyrics, while Weiland is just the opposite. Weiland is a professed Wilson fan, so there wouldn't take much. Also, keep in mind that both list the Beatles as their favorite group. Wilson prefers McCartney (obviously, since they are friends), and Weiland's guy is Lennon. Put the two together....

Okay, that was kind of long winded, but that's my pick.

  8. From yahoo news

SANTA MARIA, United States (AFP) - A son of late acting legend Marlon Brando was implicated in an alleged plot by Michael Jackson to kidnap the boy who accused him of child molestation, a court heard.

The bombshell was dropped during a pre-trial hearing in Jackson's child molestation case when prosecutors revealed they had recently discovered documents linking Miko Brando with the alleged crime.

Brando, 44, the son of the Oscar-winning movie giant, works as a security guard for the "King of Pop" and received a 20,000-dollar petty cash payment from Jackson, prosecutor Ronald Zonen told Judge Rodney Melville.

A record of the alleged December 2003 transaction was discovered in documents seized in a search of the home of Jackson's personal assistant, the court heard.

"Evidence of the movement of cash (is) consistent with count one of the indictment" against Jackson, Zonen told the court as prosecutors and Jackson's lawyers haggled over what evidence should be allowed at trial.

Count one on the 10-count criminal indictment is that Jackson and his alleged co-conspirators planned to abduct a child, to falsely imprison someone and to extort someone.

While details of the indictment remain secret under a strict gag order in the case, the charges are thought to involve an alleged plot to abduct Jackson's young accuser, his younger brother and the boys' mother.

But Jackson lawyer Robert Sanger, arguing that the financial record should not be seen by Jackson's trial jury, said the payment proved nothing.

"There is nothing unusual with someone like Michael Jackson, with such a large operation like Neverland, to have 20,000 dollars in cash delivered to them for the purpose of running their daily affairs," Sanger said.

Jackson's legal team wants a battery of documents seized from the home of Jackson's personal assistant ruled inadmissible as evidence at trial, while prosecutors are fighting to have it included.

Also among the seized documents that the two sides sparred over Friday was what prosecutors said was evidence that Jackson had "orchestrated" demonstrations by fans outside the courtroom in Santa Maria, California.

Jackson has turned up in court several times since January and thousands of screaming fans have also appeared to support their hero against what they say are false allegations against him.

Another of the disputed sets of documents Jackson's lawyers want kicked out of evidence is a calendar indicating Jackson, 46, was at his Neverland ranch when certain material was downloaded off the Internet that prosecutors said could corroborate evidence that will be given by Jackson's accuser.

Judge Melville said he would rule on whether the various items would be admitted into evidence at Jackson's trial, due to start here on January 31, but said he was not inclined to admit evidence of Jackson's alleged involvement in organising demonstrations in support of him as it appeared irrelevant.

Jackson is charged with molesting a 12-year-old boy at his Neverland Ranch, near here, in February and March of last year. He was arrested on November 19, 2003 and freed on three million dollars' bail.

In April, he pleaded innocent to charges including child abuse, plying a minor with alcohol and conspiring to kidnap, illegally imprison and extort his alleged victim or his family.

The judge, growing impatient at one point during the second day of a two-day pre-trial hearing on Friday, said he was determined that jury selection should begin in the trial on January 31.

At one point Melville cut Sanger off, saying: "You notice how grumpy I get at 4:30 in the afternoon. It's a good time to shut up," he said ordering both sides to properly share information with each other.

The next hearing in the case is likely to be November 22.

  9. Hunsicker resigns as Astros GM

By JOEL ANDERSON, AP Sports Writer

    November 1, 2004

HOUSTON (AP) -- Houston Astros general manager Gerry Hunsicker resigned Monday, less than two weeks after the team came within one win of reaching the World Series for the first time.

``It has been an incredible nine years, and when I look back I will take with me a lifetime of memories,'' said Hunsicker, who had the job for nine years.

Tim Purpura, Hunsicker's assistant and the team's director of player development, will succeed him immediately.

``I have very large shoes to fill,'' said Purpura, who has been with the Astros for 11 years.

During Hunsicker's tenure, the Astros won four NL Central titles and finished second three times, including this past season.

``I will look with pride at what we have accomplished,'' Hunsicker said. ``We almost got there, and I know we are going to get there real soon.''

Hunsicker, 53, said he will remain with the Astros as an adviser through next season.

He became general manager on Nov. 10, 1995, and had one year remaining on his contract. Hunsicker said the subject of a contract extension came up last week in a meeting with team owner Drayton McLane.

``I told them at the start of that meeting that next year would be my 10th year and that was a long time staying in one place,'' Hunsicker said, adding that he wasn't interested in an extension and that Purpura who was ready to assume the top job.

``He has got the ability,'' Hunsicker said. ``He is willing to take on this challenge. He is just waiting for the opportunity.''

Hunsicker came to the Astros from the New York Mets, where he was the No. 2 person in baseball operations. He previously had worked with the Astros as traveling secretary, minor league pitching coach, scout and assistant to the general manager.

``I will look with pride at what we have accomplished,'' he said. ``I will continue to look forward.''

Purpura has been in the Astros organization for 11 years, including stints as assistant director of minor league operations and director of player relations. He joined Houston after spending two seasons on the staff of the Arizona Fall League. He also was an assistant in player development with the California Angels and headed special projects for the San Diego Padres' minor league department.
