  1. A player I find gets left off the wonderkid lists all the time is 19yo Uruguayan centre-back Sebastián Coates. Every game I have ever signed him for (he starts at Uruguayan First Division club Nacional) he has been a fantastic signing and evolves into an awesome player in the top leagues. The best thing is that his minimum release fee at the start is £2.4m, which for his talent to beginning with is a friggin' steal, but considering he has so much more to develop into makes it one of the best bargin buys on the game.

That's the first season. Anyone else got any unearthed gems that no-one has figured out yet?

  2. Real Madrid sack director general Jorge Valdano

Real Madrid director general Jorge Valdano has been sacked after a board meeting at the Bernabeu stadium.

"We have decided to end the contractual relationship with Jorge Valdano," said Real president Florentino Perez.

Valdano's removal is part of a Real reorganisation that strengthens Jose Mourinho's position at the Madrid club.

The pair fell out after Valdano queried Mourinho's request for another striker as cover for the injured Gonzalo Higuain earlier in the season.

"The experience of this just completed season demonstrated a need for more autonomy, including within the coaching unit," said Perez.

"Mourinho demanded an autonomy on the sporting side like that which works with English clubs. I think for the sake of the institution that this is a reorganisation that has to be done.

"We signed the best coach in the world, so we want to be sure that even when he leaves one day and we sign another of the world's best, the structure is there."

At a later media conference, Valdano revealed that he and Mourinho had not spoken "for a long time".

"I am not the one who turned Real Madrid into a battlefield," said the Argentine. "All my efforts this season were directed toward restraint.

"It has been a long time since I have spoken personally to Mourinho. We greet each other politely, but he sought to deal with people other than me.

"My responsibilities with the first team were reduced. I did not feel comfortable in that situation."

Real won its first Copa del Rey trophy in 18 years in Mourinho's first season in charge after an 1-0 extra-time win over rivals Barcelona.

But Barca claimed a third successive La Liga title and also knocked Real out of the Champions League in the semi-finals.

"I believe Jose Mourinho staying on is good for a club that's been unstable in the past," added Valdano.

"It needs to settle for a reasonable period of time. He's done a good job, I believe he is a good coach and I find it normal that he stays on."

Valdano, who played with Diego Maradona in Argentina's 1986 World Cup-winning team, coached Madrid to the Spanish league title in 1995 and played for several seasons at the club.

The 55-year-old had two years on his current deal to run.

It seems Mourinho wins this round...

  3. The whole "Chelsea only got 71pts" can be argued about Blackpool getting relegated on 39pts. I think it's not so much Chelsea, Man Utd or Arsenal being weaker as much as the rest of the table getting that little bit stronger where what would have been 3pts to a top 4 team turned into 1pt.

Although you also have to consider that 2nd is no bad thing in itself. This is the guy who won the Champions League with AC Milan and the double with Chelsea last season (09/10), so he's shown he's more than capable.

For Aston Villa, it would be a good fit. I would do it even if Houllier is healthy. Houllier, for all his strengths, hasn't quite found the formula at Aston Villa yet. And he holds great experience in youth development and organizing the structure of a organization. The work at Liverpool to implement Melwood and his work for the French national team proves this. In my view, you're getting the best out of him here. McAllister makes a good coach (although they wouldn't miss his services should he leave, I imagine) and in Ancelotti you have one of the best managers in Europe who holds experience in European competitions.

I'd call it a win-win in my book.

  4. It's a bit like wrestling - on the technicalities, yes Wigan have edged others to stay up. But on constant performances from Wigan, they are the chicken-shit heel who squeezes out a win right at the death. I'm not bothered about the supporters (or lack thereof). What bothers me is that even with their resources, they still don't do shit and amaze me that they still manage to stay up.

Alright, my earlier choice of words were incorrect. Who deserves to stay up and who doesn't is pretty much reflected on how the season actually finishes. But given Birmingham won the League Cup, qualified for Europe and lost, whilst Blackpool took the game to many top level teams and were unlucky to leave with a loss against Man Utd today, how Wigan manage to get spanked by half the teams in the league at times and survive is beyond me.

But hey, maybe they'll surprise me next season and actually start performing.

  5. Fuck Wigan. The most undeserving team to be in the Premiership ever. Just beyond shite.

Shame for Blackpool, but they give it a go and did themselves proud. They were naive in their lack of defending, but they have set themselves up nicely for the future seasons now and if they can build on that, then life shall continue to be nice and bright for the Tangerines. And congrats to Ollie for all of his accomplishments up there. You did Bristol proud sir :)

But, yeah. Fuck Wigan. I don't like to wish relegation on most teams, but if Wigan get absolutely raped next season I'll be a happy camper.

EDIT: As for Ancelotti... well, it was a given wasn't it? Chelsea didn't perform at all well this year considering the expectations that were set. I mean, if they're going to sack Avram Grant for finishing 2nd in the league and the Champions League, then Abramovic certainly isn't going to go lightly on the man who at one point looked like he could lead them to finish outside the Champions League qualification places.

  6. Brighton have signed Will Hoskins from Bristol Rovers for an undisclosed fee, rumoured to be around the £500k mark.

For a player we signed for nothing, that's not a bad return. Shame we won't have his ability, but he's clearly a talented player and deserves to play a higher level of football. Good luck to the man :)

  7. See, to a team like Bristol Rovers - or any other lower league team for that matter - loyalty can only go so far. There is only so much of a commitment you can make before you have to think of number one. But there is always a way to leave a club. The way many of these guys just lie to the fans, telling them what they want to hear... I can only liken it to a relationship. You're there in a stable relationship with a girl (or guy, depending on what you're into). You're telling her how happy you are, how you don't want to fuck those other girls... until the really hot model comes along and you just go off with her. If you're the person getting fucked over, of course you're going to feel lied to.

I think players are just told to follow the PR stunt of "tell them you love everything about the club", even if it's a lie. Which works so well, until they leave. I'd rather players just say the truth in those situations: "I love playing here at Bristol Rovers, but if Manchester United or Liverpool give me a call, I'm gone. But thank you for supporting me." That would be fine.

EDIT: As for Rooney... I don't care. He's quite obviously a tit, but if he's getting abuse then why can he not give it back? Although arguing over the internet, as we all know, is serious business :shifty:

  8. A small part of me does want them to stay up they are ridiculously entertaining, is there anyway they can stay up even if they lose at Old Trafford?

Nope. However, a draw could do it, providing Birmingham lose to both Fulham and Tottenham. Not impossible, but I could see them getting something against Fulham.

I hope Blackpool stay up. If there's justice in football, they will.

  9. I don't ever get the arguments about Man Utd. The fact that the Glazers only seem concerned with utilizing Man Utd as a cash cow, to me, seems misplaced. Man Utd built THEMSELVES into that mold on the back of the success throughout the 1990's. In fairness to the Glazers, whilst they have lumbered the club with debt, it's leveraged debt. It's not like they won't be able to make it back - they are more than able to earn that debt back. If a club like Bristol Rovers (my team that I support, who are currently £4m+ in debt) did that, it would take some master plan to make it work. Man Utd, for better or worse, have made the most out of their situation and made it work very well.

Same we can't do that at Bristol Rovers :shifty:
