  1. Is Colchester manager Joe Dunne unfathomably good in anyone else's game? So far he's strolled to League 1 with Colchester, then took them to the brink of the play-offs before leaving for Aston Villa in the Premier League, where he took them from the relegation zone to a final position of 7th. I suppose it's relatively early in his career at the moment but I was surprised to see him achieve so much success so quickly.

  2. Being as this apparently is a thread filled with negativity, I feel I should post occasionally to remind people that I am delighted with how things are going at Charlton Athletic; we have a universally popular manager, a talented squad tailored towards good football, and in spite of our disappointing defeat to Sheffield Wednesday today we are still comfortably clear of the relegation zone with a faint hope of the play-offs. I love the Npower Football League! :)

  3. Tom Waits is fantastic. I think I first came across his name on EWB and I was intrigued enough to listen to some of his earlier work. I thought it was brilliant. But then I got onto Swordfishtrombones and now I think I'm becoming obsessed. I bought Rain Dogs and wouldn't let myself listen to it until I finished my exams, and tonight I got to listen to it! It is just so wonderful, Waits tells such incredible stories, his voice fits them like a glove, and every song just sounds perfect. Clap Hands, Jockey Full of Bourbon, Gun Street Girl... so many highlights. So, in short, I love Tom and I think I want to be his best friend.

  4. The Gaslight Anthem's first album "Sink or Swim" and their EP "The Senor and the Queen". I'm liking the rawer, more punkish sound.

As well as that, I'm listening to Brian Fallon's side project The Horrible Crowes album "Elsie". I really like this too. It's darker, but just as heartfelt because of way that Fallon has with words.

I think Elsie is brilliant. Sometimes it feels a bit like Gas-Lite Anthem (a terrific pun and I'm sure you will all agree) but on the whole I think it's probably my second favourite Fallon work behind The '59 Sound. Sugar, Black Betty & The Moon and Blood Loss are all terrific.

  5. I think 2D classic definitely helps with the match-engine bugs. I've been cycling through careers quite quickly so far losing interest as my players repeatedly fire wide from 30 yards, but since experimenting at Norwich in 2D things have become a lot more realistic. Even if I'm still not doing particularly well. :shifty:

  6. Having messed about with Tottenham a bit to ease into the game, I've now started a proper career with Bournemouth. All I need to do is manage Watford and I'll have quickly completed the Lineker Achievement. I've made an underwhelming start with 1 win, 1 defeat and 3 draws in the league to accompany exiting the League Cup and Johnstone's Paint Trophy at the first hurdle, but we're playing reasonably well and I've got plenty of money for transfers and a deep squad, so I'm hopeful we can at least achieve a top half finish this season, then push for promotion next time out.

  7. I think he's done OK. They got off to a good start to the season, had a terrible run of form over Autumn, but have shown signs of recovery in the last two or three games. Bakary Sako is a contender for signing of the season. I can understand the dissatisfaction of Wolves fans but I'd be giving him time if he was managing my team.

What the fuck kind of "match preview" is that, Jonathan Pearce? A 13 paragraph whinge about "Why I Dislike Chelsea Football Club"? You get to write stuff like that in opinion articles, not match previews. But then only certain people get to do opinion articles on BBC Sport and, for reasons readily apparent, you're not one of them.

Go back to fucking Robot Wars.

I agree that the match preview isn't the best, though I'd say it's more to do with the fact that he's decided to ramble on about Brendan Rodgers' team selection in the Anzhi game for no apparent reason, instead of Chelsea-Man City.

  10. Good work on the list damshow! I'm pretty sure my top four were The Smiths, Johnny Cash, Laura Marling and Frank Turner, so I'm pleased to see them all chart. I'm not a massive fan of the top three, but on the whole I think that is a satisfying and diverse list.

  11. The other band whose inclusion garnered my attention were Andrew Jackson Jihad. I love a lot of their work, but sometimes I think they're too self consciously controversial, like they sit down before writing their songs with the mission of, without meaning to sound morally uptight, shoehorning in as much vulgarity in as possible.

Have you listened to them for a while? On their early EPs they did this, yeah, but lately they've just been sitting down and saying, "hmm, how depressing can we make this song?!"

The last album I listened to was Can't Maintain. Which I enjoyed, mostly, but it did have We Didn't Come Here to Rock on it, which is pretty much exactly what I'm talking about. The overriding message I got from that song was pretty much "HA HA! CRITICS! CUNT! CUNT! CUNT!" which isn't really what I look for in music.

  12. This list is overwhelming me with the amount of music I want to listen to but haven't. Reel Big Fish, Reuben, Regina Spektor, and that's just off the top of my head... Frank Sinatra probably tops that list though, especially because I've been really getting into Tom Waits as of late, and I believe albums like Watertown capture a similar sort of 'down on your luck, closing time at the bar' vibe.

Good to see Kinks and Leonard Cohen. Kinks are one of my favourite groups of their time, and Leonard Cohen is such an endlessly fascinating singer. I think I voted for him, but if I didn't I really really should have done.

Its been a patchy list so far for me. I've still got three artists who I voted for that I think could have a real say high up the list though, so I remain optimistic.

  13. Hey! Its the music opinions of the guy who killed the short lived EWB Music Club by suggesting a folk album everyone hated! Hooray!

Artists I have no experience of- Fiona Apple, Hop Along, Four Year Strong, The Beach Boys (they are high on my list of bands to delve into though!) Sevendust, Iced Earth, Fun.

Michael Jackson- On the one hand, my parents love him and as a rebellious youngster this meant I had to hate his entire back catalogue, so I still have some residual dislike left over from that period. On the other, I'm coming round to a lot of his songs. I wouldn't consider buying an album or anything, but he made some quirky, catchy stuff.

Scott Walker - Have barely scratched the surface, but I like what I've heard. I need to sit down and properly listen to his songs at some point.

Alestorm - They're pirates! How unique! I think they're OK and I can understand why people like them, but I wouldn't buy a record.

Bob Dylan- I seem to remember posting here once to say I didn't like Bob Dylan. I was young and foolish! I still don't love him to the extent that some people do because, being an uneducated heathen, I don't listen to lots and lots of music that makes me think too deeply, and when I do I tend to stick with people I know and love like Leonard Cohen or Tom Waits. But I get the appreciation for him, and 'It Ain't Me Babe' is rapidly rising my list of favourite songs.

Carly Rae Jepsen - I quite like Carly Rae Jepsen. I have only heard Call Me Maybe, but as a song it doesn't take itself seriously, has a catchy chorus, and is just generally very likeable as a song. For all I know the rest of her songs are all Neo-Nazi anthems, but still...

The Specials - The Specials are great. Don't listen to them too often, else I might well have voted for them. I should do though, I really really like what I've heard.

Evanescence - BOOOOOOO HISSSSSSSSSS. They had that song that says "wake me up inside and save me from my doom," which I found kind of scary as a youngster. I have had no inclination to listen to any of their music since then, but I really, really don't think I would like them much at all.

Lady Gaga - I think Apsham summed up my feelings on Gaga better than I could. I have little time for her.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Excellent. Like a good 'rasslin fan, I got into Jimi through Voodoo Child being Hulk Hogan's theme music for a spell. Much like the Specials I don't listen to them often enough, but I think they're great and I could easily have been persuaded to vote for them.

Maroon 5 - If ever I had a guilty pleasure, it would be Maroon 5. I don't even know quite why I like them, but I find them very listenable and all their hit songs I've enjoyed.

Jonathon Coulton - I don't quite get the love for him, but I find his music quite charming in it's own way. I could see myself getting into him.
