Well aye, but only for the winning side. Whereas Doncaster can draw Man United at home and make a killing on the gate and TV revenue even if they lose 8-0. There's no TV revenue or boosted attendance for Newport v Eastleigh, and one of those sides isn't walking away with the 3rd Round prize money either. So it's just two extra games for very little benefit or intrigue.

In this case there will be a boost to attendance because they know what awaits the winner after the replay but I do understand what you mean if they drew a similar team in the next round.

Lineker suggested what they do in the FA Trophy where teams decide whether they want to go to a replay or extra time/penalties before the game and I agree with that and built on it. I think originally a game like Newport vs Eastleigh, both teams may unanimously decide beforehand to scrap a potential replay and go straight to extra time and penalties if needed, however, say Eastleigh win and they have a chance of getting a replay at Old Trafford, there's no doubt they'd choose the replay option.

Nuno Santo says he wants the replays scrapped and multiple coaches have said similar, with 7 of the 20 PL clubs forced by having replays to cut short their winter break scheduling.

The overworking of players and additional fixtures is a huge talking point in football at the moment, and whilst this element of it is nothing compared to what they're doing with international and continental competitions, it is absolutely part of the issue.

Look, I support a team currently at the bottom end of the EFL pyramid. I do get why the lucrative cup games can help a club massively but it's total pot luck whether or not a team draws one (such illustrious ties as Maidstone v Stevenage, Shrewsbury v Wrexham and Newport v Eastleigh took place this weekend) so unless you guarantee these sorts of games with seeding, the potential benefits to lower clubs are more like breadcrumbs compared to what the additional fixtures are contributing to in terms of fatigue and extra cost.

I disagree with this part because once you reach the 3rd round onwards, the prize money starts going up sharply in terms of what it means for lower league sides, so if a lower league side draws another lower league side then both teams feel they've got a very good chance of progressing and earning even more prize money. Then the odds of drawing a bigger club goes down as you go through the rounds.

For context, Maidstone started in the 2nd qualifying round, they got £3,375 for winning that game. For beating Stevenage, they received £105,000 in prize money.

My club is desperate for a new clubhouse, even though we're a lot further down the pyramid than Maidstone, it makes me fully understand what a good cup run can do for a club.

Is it in the FA Trophy where the two teams drawn in any given tie can decide between themselves whether they will play a replay if needed or have a penalty shootout after 90 minutes? I like that system.

Yes, I believe so. I think that would work in the FA Cup where by default there would be a replay but the clubs can unanimously decide to just to extra time and penalties beforehand. This way, the lower league clubs still get the chance of a replay.

  4. In the FA Cup, we beat Penistone Church 2-0 (who happen to be the club where John Stones started which they really do push!) and play Workington of the Northern Premier League this Saturday at Workington in the 1st qualifying round.

In the league, a goalless draw at Charnock Richard, a 2-2 draw at Squires Gate (interesting about their ground is that it basically shares a wall with Blackpool Wren Rovers ground which surely, apart from ground sharers, makes the two grounds the closest proximity to anyone else), a 5-2 home defeat against Wythenshawe FC and a 4-2 win away to Cheadle Town puts us mid table with one more game to go in August (tonight at AFC Liverpool).

We also progressed to the 2nd qualifying round of the FA Vase with a comfortable 4-1 win against Beverley Town of the NE Counties 1st Division (for the first time, I did the Facebook live match updates for that one).

  5. There's no FA Cup thread yet so I'll put it here.

Prestwich Heys got through to the Preliminary round of the FA Cup after upsetting Bootle 3-1 (who are a step higher than us). No fluke result as we played them off the park for most of the game. It'll be Penistone Church or City of Liverpool in the next round who drew 2-2 after Liverpool equalised in the 99th minute.

In the league so far, we've played 2, won 1, lost 1. A poor opening day performance as we lost 3-1 to Burscough who were only saved from relegation last season by the reorganisation of the leagues at step 5. That was followed by a 3-0 win against NW Counties 1st Division North champions Pilkington on Tuesday in a top performance where 6 changes were made.

There were two clubs in my town, and I nominally supported one (went to odd games, played a couple of charity games there, actually had one of my kids christening do in their function room (the day after a charity game where one godparent tore his ACL and the rest of us stood on the pitch getting sunburnt waiting for the ambulance. The christening photos aren't great)), but they lost their ground and now play 40 minutes down the road. The other team have just launched a £21 season ticket, but I can't defect. :(

    That's proper non-league!

It's a tough one. There are a few at Prestwich who were Bury FC fans and for their personal reasons couldn't support Bury AFC so came to Heys. Now they're fully with us but are now conflicted now Bury FC are back (and more so as they're in our league!)

  7. A few years ago, I was playing Football Manager managing a team in the North West Counties League called Prestwich Heys (using a modded database).

After that save, I kept saying to myself I should go and see them play in real life, just one time. I kept putting it off, then COVID happened so it just never did.

Anyway, at the beginning of last season, I finally went to a game. It was an FA cup extra preliminary round match. My itch was satisfied, that'll be it!

On the drive home I was thinking about the couple of hours I spent there and thought "you know what? I want to go again".

Long story short, since then, I've only missed one home game, towards the end of the season I started to go to some away games, become a volunteer at the club, bought the replica shirt and other merch and met some people I now call friends.

The reason I'm posting this really just an encouragement to go and see your local team. It's a completely different feel to watching Premier League and EFL games. There's a real community feel, I've stood and chatted with opposition fans, it's a fraction of the cost and you know the club really appreciates your support.

EDIT: The reason I'm posting this now is because the new league season starts tomorrow and I'm super hyped!

I guess the key difference between a Wrexham and a Newcastle is that the distortion feels bigger. Wrexham alone are blowing every other team in their league out the water resource-wise, and it'll be the same when they get to League Two. Newcastle can outspend the world and still probably only put themselves in the same category as City, Chelsea, Liverpool etc. due to the ceiling of the sport being there.

That, and as I say the fact teams at that level go out of business for tiny amounts by comparison. No one in the Premier League is in any danger of going bust.

Anyway, that's me done on this topic. I have never felt less interested in football due to the way money and the likes of the Saudis have corrupted it, and I have stopped going to games entirely so that current ill-feeling for it all certainly informs my view here.

Honestly, my advice is to go and watch your local non-league team. I started going at the start of this season. Originally I intended just to go for the one game but since then I've missed only one home game, I love it!

They are outspending most League One clubs for players, they shouldn't even be having to scrap to get out of the National League.

I personally don't care what the motivation of the people behind it is, all clubs who do this where they obscenely bankroll their way up the leagues are not to be celebrated. It distorts the playing field at a level where finance matters so much more than it does at the top level. Wrexham is a plaything for the Hollywood boys, they had never heard of the place before being directed to buy that club.

They're not underdogs and the fawning by media outlets is cynical in the extreme, since it's all to get eyes on the television screen.

Salford, Fleetwood, Wrexham - they are all the same.

There are different ways though that clubs get their funding. For example, the non-league team I go to watch every week are in the same league as Bury AFC (everyone knows their story) who get 4 figure crowds and West Didsbury and Chorlton who get double, and for most clubs in the league, treble the gate therefore have a much higher income than the rest yet nobody takes issues with them.

  10. This hit me pretty hard even though I don't personally know Jason David Frank. Tommy was my hero when I was a kid. In primary school, we played Power Rangers and I was always the green ranger, I used to tie my school jumper over my shoulders and around my neck to fashion the Dragon Shield.

For anyone who's ever seen Zyuranger, when Burai dies, Dragon Caeser goes into a depression and in my head I imagine the Dragonzord doing the same. Obviously it's not real, but that still breaks my heart.

Laugh at the German press and pundits who were calling this Germany's "easiest game" and talking about playing at "our Wembley"?

I would, but I don't know the German for schadenfreude

Halfway through my third season with Queen's Park now and I'm sitting top of the Championship after back-to-back promotions in years one and two. Annoyingly my original thought was I could make the club bigger and successful to the point that perhaps one day in the very distant future we'd go from having 200 fans inside Hampden to a 50,000 sellout. Alas the moment I was promoted from League 2 and the club turned semi-professional the board decided we should move to the 2,000 capacity Lesser Hampden and I can only assume we sold Hampden itself as the finances of the club got a massive increase overnight, going up by about £5m. Now we're looking at promotion to the Scottish Premiership but I'm dreading that campaign because the club's stature and reputation, plus our finances, mean that I can't really envisage a scenario whereby I can put together a team that can survive - hell I've still got a couple of players on Amateur contracts from the League 2 season - and I think that we'll quickly end up haemorrhaging money and end up in a lot of debt without a takeover.

The move to Lesser Hampden is coded in the game as Queens Park are moving there in January 2021 in real life. They currently have an agreement with the SFA to sell Hampden to them. I'm not sure if the sale has been completed though.
