I'm trying to ID a movie...

Hey. The last couple of days I've been half remembering a movie I saw about a quarter of once, and it's driving me crazy. If I recall correctly, it was about a rather nerdy lad who decides he's going to keep a vigil on the front lawn of the girl he loves for a whole summer.

Maybe someone else can help me out with this one. It's about a kid who runs away, stealing a car in the process, and drives across the country. On the way he runs in to a bunch of different characters, all of whom are currently playing this like lottery game where you have to find and collect a certain number of cards to spell out, I believe "Motor World" or some shit like that. It's been bugging me for years, yes, years.
