Backlash

April 29, 2001

WWF Lightweight Title

Singles Match

Crash Holly © vs. Dean Malenko

This match has had a decently good build up but the crowd reaction alone should tell you that the folks are sick of little Crash Holly. Which explains why this one actually took place in the main event of Sunday Night Heat. The WWF should really give him some time off the air and try to develop him a little bit more before continuing with anything else. Holly got in a little offense but most of the match was dominated by Malenko after some interference from Perry Saturn. Malenko got the got the win after connecting with the Tornado DDT.

Winner: Dean Malenko

Triple Threat Hardcore Match

Rhyno © vs. Tito Ortiz vs. Kane

Tito Ortiz was fired up in this one, taking the advantage early with a couple chair shots to Rhyno and Kane. Kane was the first to recover strong after dodging a chair shot and connecting with a big boot which sent the chair right into Tito’s face, sending him down hard. Kane did not let Tito lay there, immediately rising him to his feet and going for a Choke Slam which was broken up after Rhyno connected with a chair shot to Kane’s right knee. Kane turned to face Rhyno and was met with a huge Gore which sent the big man down hard. Tito was quick to roll to the outside but was quickly followed by Rhyno. The two men exchanged blows down the ramp way and were soon brawling on the main stage. Kane eventually got to his feet and slowly made his way to the stage where Tito had just laid out Rhyno which a huge shot from a trash can which completely dented the trash can in. Tito was quick to notice Kane’s presence but he noticed just a little too late as Kane already had his hand around the ultimate fighter’s throat and connected with a huge Choke Slam onto the main stage which left Tito rolling in agony. Kane made the mistake of taunting Tito as Rhyno was slowly getting to his feet and when Kane turned around he met with a second Gore. Rhyno then waited for Tito to get to his feet and when he did attempted a Gore but Tito quickly moved to the side and gave Rhyno a push in the back which sent him right off the main stage! Tito looked in shock as Rhyno lay motionless on top of some equipment which clearly wouldn’t be being put to work anytime soon. Tito slowly made his way down to where Rhyno was and made the cover for the win. Tito celebrated to a mixed reaction from the crowd but it was mostly boos coming from the crowd tonight.

WWF European Title

Eddie Guerrero © vs. Tazz

Tazz was attacked by Benoit before this one even got started but soon their were road agents and security bringing Benoit backstage where we later received word that he was forced to leave the building. Tazz eventually got his feet but as soon as he rolled into the ring he was bet with boots from Guerrero as this one got underway. The ref tried to halt the attack but was shoved down by Guerrero in the process. Eddie got a lot of heat from the crowd which will hopefully show someone in the back that this man deserves a good push at some point in the next year. Tazz made a comeback a few minutes into the match after grabbing Guerrero by the waist and connecting with an over the head belly to belly suplex which sent Guerrero down hard although he was quick to get to his feet. This led to a great display of both men’s excellent wrestling abilities. An impressive ending when Guerrero when to attempt the Frog Splash on a thought to be fallen Tazz, as soon as Guerrero lept Tazz sprung to his feet but Guerrero was able to notice and somehow landed on his feet. However, Guerrero landed in front of Tazz giving Tazz the needed edge to lock Guerrero in the Tazzmission which left Guerrero with no choice other then to tap. As Tazz celebrated Guerrero argued with the referee but whatever he was complaining about wasn’t listened to. His complaining seemed to annoyed Tazz which led to another brawl between the two men but security quickly got things under control.

Tag Team Ladder Match

Edge © and Christian © vs. The Hardy Boyz

This match was an all out brawl and definitely one of the best matches tonight if not the best. Edge and Christian were quick to make every cheap shot which got them loads of heat from the crowd. The Hardyz were to comeback with a double clothesline on both Edge and Christian which led to brawl on the outside as both Edge and Christian rolled to ringside. Edge reached under the ring and pulled out a ladder but was quickly met by a leaping Jeff Hardy which sent both men down hard. Edge take the brunt of the punishment since he fell with the ladder on top of him and Jeff Hardy on top of the ladder. This led to a series of high spots between both teams but the Hardyz got the advantage after sending Christian through a nicely positioned table. Matt then brawled with Edge as Jeff climbed the ladder to grab the titles but some interference from William Regal quickly changed the tides. Regal immediately hit the ring, knocking over the ladder which sent Jeff Hardy tumbling to the outside where he landed hard and laid motionless throughout the duration of the match. Regal then got involved with Edge and Matt Hardy, nailing Matt with the patented brass knuckles, beating him profusely until Matt was left in agony holding his now bloodied skull. Edge entered the ring and Regal helped Christian as both men set up ladders and climbed to the top, regaining their tag team titles.

Singles Match for the open Commissioner job

Mick Foley vs. Shawn Michaels

Things get underway with Foley nailing HBK with several right hands but HBK came back strong with a huge clothesline, sending Foley down hard. Foley quickly retaliated and both men exchanged blows for some time. Things weren’t fair for long because Vince McMahon quickly made his way to the ring with Tito Ortiz. Referee Teddy Long attempted to send the men to the back but Teddy Long was quickly reminded who’s company this was. (Although technically its Billy Watts now) Tito entered the ring and the double team immediately took place. HBK fought Foley off but Tito was too strong for the aged HBK to fight off. HBK was quickly beaten down but Vince ordered Tito to hold Michaels up as Vince got a chair and of course things got bad from here. Vince nailed Michaels with several chair shots and then proceeded to give the chair to Foley. Foley nailed Michaels with a shot to the gut followed by a shot to the back of the falling Michaels. Michaels lay motionless as Foley made the cover for the win. Vince held Foleys hand high in the air as the three men celebrated before heading to the back.

WWF Intercontinental Title

Singles Match

Kurt Angle © vs. Chris Jericho

Angle and Jericho worked very well together although I’ve heard reports of this storyline not being continued after Backlash. I guess the WWF has bigger plans for Angle then this. This match went back and forth but a low blow from Angle gave him the needed advantage to connect with the Angle Slam for the win. Angle celebrated but of course was getting tons of heel heat throughout the duration of his victory celebration. Now lets hope both of these men get their deserving push to the top in the coming months. Although I’m sure that only of the two will.

Winner: Kurt Angle

No DQ Singles Match

Undertaker vs. Triple H

Both men were fired up but Taker took the early advantage, punching away at HHH in the corner. Taken then grabbed HHH by his hair and tossed him to the outside. Taker stalked HHH as he got up to his feet. HHH immediately grabbed a chair and then carefully got back to the ring, avoiding getting a bunch of boots from Undertaker. HHH immediately rose the chair attempting a chair shot but Taker was able to dodge the first attempt although the second attempt from HHH was right on, sending the big man down to the mat. HHH pursued to nail the fallen Undertaker with chair shot after chair shot but wasn’t able to get a three count on the big man. HHH threw the chair down in frustration and left the ring to find something more to his suiting. HHH reached under the ring and after a few moments pulled out his favorite toy, a sledgehammer. HHH reenters the ring just as The Undertaker is back up to his feet. HHH seems to be shocked that the dead man was able to get back to his feet. HHH connected with a gut shot with the sledgehammer but this only seemed to anger The Undertaker. Taker grabbed the sledgehammer from HHH’s hands and connected with a huge shot to the skull of HHH. Before the assault can continue we suddenly get a live feed on the titantron where Tito Ortiz along with Kurt Angle and William Regal are stomping away at the dead mans brother Kane. Taker is furious but before he can get out of the ring Edge and Christian slide into the ring and ambush the dead man. Taker easily fights both men off; sending both men to the outside but by this point HHH is back to his feet and connects with a huge head shot on The Undertaker with his sledgehammer. HHH then, with the help of Edge and Christian, rises Taker to his feet and then with a chair underneath connects with The Pedigree onto the chair. HHH then makes the cover for the win. The three men proceed to give Taker the boots before leaving the ring, celebrating all the way to the back.

WWF World Title

Singles Match

Steve Austin © vs. The Rock

The crowd was on fire from start to finish of this one. The Rock dominated early with a series of right hands which sent Austin to the outside to regroup. Rock was immediately in pursuit, sending Austin into the steps and then into the announce table where Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler were quick to get to their feet. Rock delivered a few more right hands and then sent Austin into the ring steps again, this time causing the ring steps to come apart and Austin to go down hard. Rock gave Austin no time to recover as he immediately sent Austin back into the ring. Rock then reentered the ring himself but was met with right hands a low blow from Austin which resulted in a warning from Earl Hebner but Austin didn’t seem to mind much. Austin got right in Hebners face but quickly put his attention back to The Rock. Austin attempted to whip Austin into the ropes but Rock reversed it and met Austin with a huge spine buster. Rocky then locked Austin in the sharp shooter which got a huge pop from the crowd. Rock had it locked in tight and there appeared to be no escape for Austin but Austin was somehow able to grab the ropes, forcing The Rock to break the hold, but not after holding the hold for a few extra seconds. The Rock waited for Austin to get back to his feet, stalking Austin all the way up until Rock connected with the Rock Bottom. As soon as this occurred a bandaged HHH made his way to ringside with Vince McMahon who were followed closely by Tito Ortiz, William Regal, Kurt Angle, Edge, and Christian who all surrounded the ring. Vince whispered something to Howard Finkel who announced to the crowd and Earl Hebner that from this point forward; this match would be No Disqualification. This led to the entire group storming the ring. Rock met Edge and Christian with right hands and was able to send them to the outside but Angle was able to sneak up behind him and connect with the Angle Slam. Vince cheered from ringside as Regal and HHH put the boots to Rocky as Angle along with Edge and Christian helped Austin to his feet. Austin looked around with a huge grin on his face as HHH and Regal helped Rocky up which resulted in a huge stunner from Austin. Austin immediately made the cover as Hebner made the count giving Austin the victory. Vince then brought a cooler full of beer into the ring as all of the men shared in a toast before drink their beers as Backlash went off the air. It appears that a new Corporation has formed which can only mean trouble for the rest of the World Wrestling Federation.
