'The Rise and Fall of ECW' was a resounding success.

Not only did the demand for ECW merchandise line Vince McMahon's pockets; it reignited interest in the Extreme Championship Wrestling brand like never before. The promotion had been dead for almost four years, but the WWE saw an opportunity to capitalize with a one-time-only celebration of ECW entitled 'One Night Stand.' The event was a critical and financial triumph, motivating McMahon to revive the company on a permanent basis.

On May 26th 2006, WWE announced the relaunch of ECW as a standalone brand, congruous to RAW and SmackDown!, on The Sci-Fi Network.

The attempted revival was a commercial failure. Predominantly featuring WWE's "Superstars," taping in front of SmackDown!'s casual audience, and creatively led by the Sports Entertainment monolith's team of soap opera writers; none of the hallmarks of ECW were present. By the time of the show's cancellation on February 16th 2010, it was a far cry from the underground alternative of the '90s, leaving fans feeling somewhat shortchanged.

At this time I'd like to ask you to suspend your disbelief. Imagine Vince McMahon had truly allowed ECW to run as a separate entity; handing the reigns of day-to-day operations and creative control over to Paul Heyman. How would ECW have fared with its own taping schedule and exclusive roster?

For the purposes of this experiment, the events leading up to and including One Night Stand remain unchanged:

WWE Network adds Over 140 Episodes of ECW on Sci Fi; Full List Inside! | WWE Network News

ECW ON SCI-FI
JUNE 13ᵗʰ 2006

Paul Heyman: “For those of you that don't know by now, my name is Paul Heyman. I am the Executive Producer of Extreme Championship Wrestling, and since this is only a one-hour show, I'll get straight to the point.

xKtkNSP.pngIf you didn't see Monday Night RAW last night—and I wouldn't blame you if you hadn't—you won't have heard Vince McMahon declare that Rob Van Dam's victory over John Cena for the WWE Championship at One Night Stand on Sunday night will NOT be recognized because I am not a 'licensed WWE official,' whatever the hell that means.

Now, though I may not have any authority over the WWE Title; I do control the fate of the ECW World Heavyweight Championship. And unlike Vince McMahon, the ECW brand is not afraid to embrace its true champion. The ECW brand will choose to celebrate the best pure athlete in the world today. The ECW brand, therefore, proudly recognizes Rob Van Dam as our reigning undisputed champion and the man to lead us forward into this new era. Because make no mistake: this is not Monday Night RAW. This is not Friday Night SmackDown! This, my friends, is EC-f'n-W!”

< OPENING CREDITS >

Joey Styles is live alongside two-time former ECW World Heavyweight Champion Tazz inside the ECW Arena in downtown Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as we welcome you once again to Extreme Championship Wrestling!

ECW is on Sci-Fi and—as you heard at the top of the show—Rob Van Dam is the ECW World Heavyweight Champion; a title that has eluded even the likes of Chris Jericho, Mick Foley, Stone Cold Steve Austin and Rey Mysterio. A title that will indeed be on the line when ECW returns to Pay-Per-View, August 6, for Heat Wave 2006!

We hope to bring you more news regarding that particular match-up in the coming weeks, but speaking of title contention, right now we'd like to take you down to ringside where two of ECW's most decorated tag teams are ready to face off for the gold...

5hzTik9.png

It's been well over five years since 'Dastardly' Danny Doring and 'The Angry Amish Warrior' Roadkill captured the ECW World Tag Team titles from tonight's opponents.

When we return, Doring and Roadkill are already in the ring. Joey Styles notes they were the last ECW Tag Team Champions before the company folded, incidentally beating their opponents tonight to win the gold. Tazz talks about his hand in training them at the House of Hardcore and admits they are two very tough customers. "No Sleep till Brooklyn" by The Beastie Boys interrupts the announcer's conversation, as the Full Blooded Italian entourage head to the ring with a new addition in the form of Trinity, best known for her time with TNA Wrestling; a fact that isn't acknowledged on-screen. During the introductions, it becomes clear that Roadkill is by far the most popular man in the ring, though the crowd will have to wait as Little Guido and Danny Doring start the match for their respective teams.

WINNERS AND NEW ECW WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS: THE F.B.I.

Welcome back to ECW — the home of a former Olympic Gold Medalist. The home of a six-time World Champion. The home of a man that's come to be known simply as 'The Wrestling Machine.' You may already know the name Kurt Angle, but I promise, you've never seen him like this.

MIKEY BATTS (vs) KURT ANGLE

WINNER: KURT ANGLE

JUSTIN CREDIBLE & JASON (vs) ROB VAN DAM & SABU
