Stupid Photoshop Question

Given how long I've been using Photoshop, you'd think I'd have figured this out by now because it's so annoying, but is there any way to make Photoshop automatically convert "Background" layers to regular, editable ones? I know you can right click the layers icon in the layers window and select "Layer From Background", but is there any way to make Photoshop automatically do this whenever you open up an image?

What's the point of background layers, anyways? =\

I don't know of a way to make it automatically happen but if you double click the background layer it turns to a regular layer
