Venables accepts Aussie job

Thursday July 08 2004

Terry Venables is set to return Down Under after signing a one-year deal to coach Newcastle in the new Australian Premier League.

The former Barcelona, Tottenham, Leeds and England boss has been appointed as head coach of the New South Wales side and will oversee recruitment and technical development.

The deal is subject to Newcastle's likely inclusion in the proposed elite eight-team domestic competition, which is scheduled to start in July next year.

Venables will visit Newcastle in November when he will launch his preparations by meeting the players and planning for pre-season before moving to Australia from his London base next year.

The 61-year-old was manager of the Australian national side - known as the Socceroos - for their 1998 World Cup campaign where they missed out on the finals by losing a two-legged play-off to Iran.

He still has a high profile in Australia and Newcastle's general manager Jock Graham said Venables' arrival would be the most significant point in the club's four-year history.

Graham told www.smh.com.au: "He is a coach of the highest calibre and and we are delighted to have him in charge at United for the inaugural Australian Premier League.

"By signing Terry Venables, whose football credibility and pedigree speaks for itself, it tells you that (owner) Con Constantine is serious about the next five years."
