Mortiis and Fata Morgana are the first ones that spring to mind for me. Also Shinjuku Thief and Die Verbannten Kinder Evas.

STARS OF THE LID!!!!!

ELUVIUM are fucking awesome too.

Both have albums out this year, which are both class. "(Stars Of The Lid) And Their Refinement Of The Decline" is one of my favourite releases for a long time. 2 hours of awesomeness. Eluvium's new album is slightly more tuneful and melodic, "Copia", and it was that which basically got me my current love of ambient music.

Definately a good place to start.
