  1. Might as well play FM then. I never understood people who sim through whole years. I occasionally sim a match when I'm one day away from the transfer market opening, or if I'm close to the end of the season and I don't need the 3 points anyway.

Well, I enjoy it. It is one but one small aspect of the game which EA have greatly improved on from last year's iteration. I've also done it as an experiment to see how things change (or not) a fair few years' in and whether or not it makes a difference if your overall squad is rated as, say, 4 1/2* who you put in the first team.

Several things I have pretty much concluded from doing this are:

    1. Essentially, how all the teams are rated at the start is where they stay regardless, e.g. you will never see a Chelsea or a Man Utd being relegated unless you're in charge of them yourself.

    2. As a consequence of 1., the same very small group of teams are always promoted and relegated (most easy to see in the English leagues as they have two more divisions than any of the others). You could argue that this happens in real life but I would point to the example of Blackpool's surging late-season push for the Championship play-offs in 2009/2010 as an instance where a team defied the odds.

    3. Usually once a season, a team in your league will be taken over at complete random. They will have a cash injection of over £100m but it won't have any visible effect on where they finish regardless of who they buy in the transfer window, particularly if they are in the mid-table area, cf. 2.

    4. Even on normal Pro difficulty, the board have somewhat high expectations of your team. After surviving relegation on the final day from the Premier League but winning the FA Cup, I was expected both to win the Europa League and league title the very next season with next to nothing in the way of a transfer and wage budget.

In spite of these issues, it still is a lot better than the one in 11 but clearly still a work-in-progress.

  2. Up to 2020/2021 in Career Mode with Bury - this is my second season in the Premier League and the board expect me to win the Europa League and finish in the top four... I only survived relegation on the final day of the first season in the PL! >_<

  3. Got it this morning. Just concentrating on getting my Pro all the Arena accomplishments first - have them all now except the goalkeeper ones and scoring from further than 32 yards, which is quite tricky when starting out stats-wise.

  4. Can someone link me to the site where you login? I've googled it but I'm still struggling to find it.

    http://www.ea.com/uk/football/fifa-ultimate-team

    Thank you.

Also, judging from the splash page on nufc.co.uk some if not all of Newcastle's players have their faces scanned for this years version! What what I've seen and read on twitter, it's just Colo, Jonas, Tiote, Ben Arfa and Nile Ranger confirmed so far. Jonas looks amazing!

It's not too late to buy Shola Amoebi off me. :shifty:

  5. I got Adebayor in my first pack, but I'm selling basically everyone who has an actual value who doesn't fit in with the formation I intend to play (4-2-3-1). Hopefully this will be a good short-term profit-making measure and when the game itself is actually released, I can buy some of these players back at a much cheaper rate than the cost of re-training their positions or formations.

  6. It's alright. The story is a bit dull and it is cell-shaded so some people would be turned off by the graphics. But the controls are simple, fun, and it has one of the nicest menus I've ever seen in a video game.

There's the 2008 cell shaded game.. but I think he's referring to The Forgotten Sands.

I was actually referring to the 2008 game, so thanks for the reply.

It's decent if you get it for a low price - combat is somewhat repetitive though. Some of the achievements are quite a challenge to obtain as well.

As for me, I've mostly been playing Top Spin 4 and Child of Eden this week - the former I'm terrible at, the latter is basically Rez HD 2 (I say that as a good thing from my point of view).

  7. I like Bury, if only because I imagine them as football's answer to Harlequins.

For someone who doesn't know much about rugby union or Harlequins (besides the recent scandal), please expand!

  8. I can't play on Manager Mode. Firstly, I just want to play football, I can't be fucked with transfers and the like. I'd buy Championship Manager to do that. Secondly, my TV isn't HD. The text is too blurred to read. It's a shame the proper football league system with promotions and relegation is within that instead of the tournament mode. Oh well.

I'm still taking time to get used to FIFA again. I haven't played it in five years... Which is my excuse for why I lost 7-0 to Bury last night. Looks like I will be the Funaki of any EWB FIFA activities. >_<

There's no shame in losing to Bury! :D

Still, some EWB FIFA activites would be good. I'm a novice when it comes to FIFA games. The last one I actually owned was FIFA 98: RTWC!

Does anyone know which teams/players have fake names in the game?

Initial impressions are that getting the right power for shots are difficult. Mine either seem to be more like passes or are blasts over the bar.

Also, is there a way to do low crosses or ground ones?

There ought to be a method of 'releasing' some players. I downloaded the latest squad updates and it still has Jordan Robertson at Bury, who some of you may know was only on loan there and has now been jailed for 36 months anyway!

  9. So Darlo today announced 10 new signings. We actually have the makings of a squad now! After the past six months it's just great to know I'll still have a team to follow.

    Dean Windass

    Steve Foster

    Ian Miller

    David Knight

    Gary Smith

    Ben Starosta

    Craig James

    Lee Thorpe

    Chris Lumsdon

    Jeff Smith

    Matty Plummer

    James Bennett

I've never been so delighted to sign lower league journeymen in all my life.

Can't say any of those names with the possible exception of Windass would inspire me if I were a Darlington fan. You also have to wonder what kind of wages he'd be on.
