Jay-Z and Def Jam

The legendary hip-hop record label that signed Run DMC, Public Enemy, and the Beastie Boys and more recently, the likes of Ja Rule, DMX, and Method Man, announced Jay Z would be its new president. On Air America Radio this morning, Chuck D said LL Cool J, who was apparently lobbying for the position himself, was none too pleased. Is the Jay Z appointment a desperate PR stunt from a company struggling to adjust to a rapidly changing market, or a shrewd business move from a label looking to bolster its street cred?

Anyone know if theirs truth behind this? If it is I like Def Jam again, Jay-Z is one of few rappers I still have a real love for despite his 'retirement'.
