The New Orleans Hornets hope to interview Byron Scott for their vacant coaching position, league sources told ESPN.com's Marc Stein.

No meeting with Scott has been formally set, but Stein reports that Hornets owner George Shinn has strong interest in the former Nets coach as part of his desire to replace Tim Floyd with a proven NBA winner.

While Scott is expected to eventually meet with the Hornets, they'd be a long shot to actually hire him. Scott, Magic Johnson's backcourt mate on the Lakers' Showtime teams, is regarded as the favorite to replace L.A.'s Phil Jackson if Jackson elects to retire after this season.

Scott also has strong ties to Sacramento, where he was an assistant before coaching the Nets, and to Memphis president Jerry West. Neither of those teams is looking for a coach at present, but Kings coach Rick Adelman figures to come under fire if Sacramento fails to win its second-round series vs. Minnesota. Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown, meanwhile, has said that health concerns, at age 70, could force him to resign. Brown was named NBA Coach of the Year last month for leading Memphis to its first 50-win season.

New Orleans native Avery Johnson, Hornets assistant coach Alvin Gentry and veteran TV analyst Mike Fratello have also been mentioned as Hornets candidates.

Marc Stein is a senior NBA writer for ESPN.com.

I like Scott a lot. Everyone knows he won't be without a job for long.....so why not this one?

My only gripe is, why didnt they sign Scott at the start of the season instead of going cheap to sign Floyd or whatever his name is?

Um....Didn't Byron Scott get fired after the season started? If he was fired last off season the Hornets would've been able get him and have the Nets pay the salary.

Scott was under contract until the end of this season with the Nets.

But if he's fired he's free to go anywhere. He still gets his money from the Nets for the year, and whatever else the new team wants to add to that. If he had re-signed then he would need the Nets permission before being hired somewhere.

scott would bring the hornets to where they should be... in the 2nd round.

I wouldn't say they should be in the Second Round, The Miami Heat are a very good and very improved Team.

The Hornets are in disarray, with Mashburn likely leaving, and them moving to the West next year, making the playoffs looks like a longshot right now, whoever the coach may be.
