I have the first Empire Earth, and yes you can go all the way up to the modern day with tanks etc. I didn't like it as much as AoE, I think the increased scope actually works against it. You can progress from archers to nuclear missiles on the same battlefield. It just becomes silly.

My buddy and I have been playing the AOE 2 expansion online for a while now. The fun has worn off a bit, since we overplayed it. But it's still cool.

I'm up for some sort of shortened network game with some people, cos our games go on for something silly like 8 hours.
