Question About Soccer/Football

I've never been a major soccer fan, and I was watching the end of a game waiting for something else to come on. Anyways, I know that the clock goes up to 90 mins., but play continues afterwards. What determines the amount of time that play continues after? And is there always time after? Thanks for putting up with my COMPLETE ignorance on the matter.

Time is added in place of delays made in putting the ball into play, subsitutions, injuries, etc.

Yup, theres pretty much some time added in most matches, probably 2 or 3 minutes on average.

It's called injury time and is basically time added up from the previous 45 minutes that has seen the ball be out of play.

There is a "fourth official" who is on the sidelines and he detirmines how much injury time is played, although the referee can over rule this.

No the referee always decides how much time is added on, the fourth official just holds up a board to let people know how much time is going to be added on.

Allowance is made in either period for all time lost through:

substitution(s)

assessment of injury to players

removal of injured players from the field of play for treatment

wasting time

any other cause

The allowance for time lost is at the discretion of the referee.

yeah the longest injury time i have seen is 6-7 minutes averages about 3.

Isn't the 'real' time kept on the field, and the stadium clock just keeps running at all times, so the players aren't really playing more minutes, it just looks like it?

yeah that's true. They aren't playing 93 minutes worth of soccer.......they're just making up the 3 minutes that they wasted earlier. It's the main referee who keeps track of this.......the sideline official just holds up the sign.
