Sufjan Stevens

I don't want a debate, an argument over how good he is/isn't/whatever. I've just had it with people saying "Oh, you like this, you'll like Sufjan Stevens." Only problem is, I've no idea where to start. What's his most accessible album, or the one which most represents his body of work?

Come On Feel The Illinoise is his most recent work (I think, at least), with the exceptions of the Avalanche album, which was B-sides and the Christmas album, which doesn't really give a good indication of his entire spectrum of work, but is still pretty damn good.

He's good, no doubt about it, and he's got some awesome tracks, but I don't really consider him the almighty deity that some people do.

"Illinois", start there. I too don't rank him as a total fucking legend. But he is really good, and some of his songs are temendously beautiful. "The Tallest Man, The Broadest Shoulders" is his best song, IMO.

It's funny I'm actualy listening to Illinoise right now. An amazing album that anybody can just sink right into. A great great Indie cd. My Personal favorite songs are; Chicago, Come on! Feel the Illinose...., Decatur,Or,Round of applause for your Stepmother. An album worth checking out.

I got into him based on the awesomeness that is "The Avalanche". Despite featuring 349845 versions of the same song (though it's a good song), it's brilliant.

you mean the three different versions of 'Chicago'? All three of them are blinding.
