It's the most pointless game in football. The teams don't care. The fans of the teams don't care. The winner doesn't win anything. Both sets of players put 90 extra minutes on their legs after already playing 5 games in the tournament.

Hopefully the extra games in 2026 will see it done away with.

To be fair, it probably would've meant a fair bit to Morocco, as it did to Croatia in 1998. Generally though, yeah, no one cares. If it wasn't for the "same match as the group stage again" fact that's been thrown around, I couldn't have even told you who we lost to in 2018... And I'll be damned if I can remember the score.

Football, cricket, rugby (do league and union count as separate things?), tennis, motorsport, boxing. That was the order that popped into my head, although I'm fantastically uninterested in boxing, so the average person might think of it sooner than I did.

Participation isn't really a fair metric, in my opinion, as most of the above have different levels of team sizes and cultural significance. Does hockey get much mention outside of the Olympics and high school PE lessons? I certainly wouldn't put it on the same level as any of the others I mentioned, and I don't even particularly care for any of them except football.

I assumed we were just talking team sports, otherwise yeah there's a bunch of things that would be way above (golf would probably be second).

Proper hockey has decent participation levels, I know 5-6 women and 2 men that play which is significantly more than any other team sport that isn't one of the main 4 (yeah, the two rugby codes are different). On the other hand I know a fair few people that go watch ice hockey at least a couple of times a year but I don't know anyone who plays it.

Actually it's probably netball, thinking about it.

I don't want to be patronising, but I can't imagine I'd be all that devastated by this if I were American. Football is the fifth most popular sport in the country and the national team is still reasonably competitive against teams representing countries that live and breathe the sport. Most other nations' fifth sports probably don't even have professional teams.

I don't even know what ours would be. Field or ice hockey I'd assume, depending on if you're going on participation or crowd attendance

Jurgen Klinsmann's thoughts are that the US team are lacking experience, which is true when you think about how young their players are, especially the front players.

They're lacking a goalscorer. Pulisic is not a proper forward, that Ferreira lad had an alright season but it was in the MLS which is probably about championship level, even their first choice Josh Sargent is just nowhere near good enough at this level.

So for Mexico to advance, they really need to hold on to the lead and for either Argentina to kick the stuffing out of Poland or Poland come back and win?

One more goal for them will do it. One for Argentina makes them perfectly tied with Poland and given they drew to Poland, I'm not entirely sure what that means... I can only assume the two managers have to play carrot in a box

One point for Denmark in that group will disappoint them massively. Some people had them down as dark horses for this competition.

Wasn't this largely based on them doing well in a qualifying group where Scotland got 23 points?

Really hope that the US Soccer media machine takes the foot off of the "Christian Pulisic is the face of the team" pedal. There are at least four or five players for US I've enjoyed watching in these matches more than him.

    Excellent timing

I've been trying to play this cool. What the fuck is CDK?

Charles De Ketelaear. I'd never heard of him a month ago either but now I have zero reason to believe he isn't going to Messi look like the Argentinean Tyler Roberts... Unless Milan stop playing silly bollocks and find another 5m behind the sofa

  9. Here's another way to look at Milan, Leeds, and Club Brugge.

Milan will probably be offering a higher salary than Leeds for CDK, Leeds offers more money to Brugge, instead of the player--because EPL teams salaries aren't as insane as you think, particularly at the Leeds level.

Or, let's say the salaries are even, if you're CDK, why in the living fuck would you want to go to Leeds? I'll also tell you why I doubt Leeds match us on salary: because CDK at 2.5m would be the highest earner at Leeds by a big margin. The highest paid player at Leeds makes 3m pounds, gross, about 3.5m euros, which means around 1.76m euros net. We paid Conti and Musacchio (2m each) more than that. Caldara makes more (2.2m). RR did (2.1m). Suso (3m) made nearly twice that--just as a point of comparison.

So many people are saying: "oh, look at Brugge, they set an asking price," who gives a shit? Lol. It's a negotiated price, the kid doesn't have a price tag on him, lol. Otherwise, you wouldn't be taking Milan's calls.

Why can't Leeds just offer 6m-a-year? They can't, because over 5 years, that's 60m. They're putting more money in the pockets of other teams than their players.

Even if the salary offers were the same (which I doubt they are), why would you trade CL football for a relegation fight? Leeds just sold their two best players, the pitch is "hey, we can get you to a dream move."

I know some of you don't want to face this fact, but, Milan, you know what? Milan is kinda a dream move. It's not Arsenal. It's not Dortmund. It's Milan. Champions of Italy Milan. All the nostalgia bullshit is starting. We make a run in the CL? Jesus, the hype will be nauseating. And think about this, if you're CDK: Maldini believes in you. When you walk into training you might walk past Capello or Seedorf one day. Who does Leeds have? Exactly.

I swear, I cannot stand the whole "EPL moneyyyyyy" garbage. I can't. We make more money than West Ham, Leeds, and Leicester. We have higher payrolls, too. We have tax benefits that allow us to pay better salaries (which we did even before the tax benefits [which is why we couldn't SELL these fodder players, because they made too much here])--and everyone is like "why not pay 5m more?"

If Brugge has this super president who has made so much money, and the kid is pure profit (he's an academy player)--what's a 3m difference? If you love the kid, why not let him have his dream move now? Why go to Leeds when you can go to Milan?

Would you rather learn under the guy who got fired by Leipzig and has no track record of developing players? Or would you rather learn under Pioli who has made young players become world-beaters? Come the fuck on.

At the end-of-the-day, our offer puts more money into CDK's hands than in his club's. I'd rather put money into our players than in other clubs' coffers. And I don't even care about CDK, I just can't stand how so many of you are approaching this, because it's not even about EPL money, because we make more than these teams. We just aren't willing to pay a stupid price.

That's why there's all this stupid handwaving over the fact that PSG paid less money for Ekitike than West Ham are paying for Scammacca. But no one is saying "holy shit, West Ham beat PSG!" No, West Ham are overpaying for him, and I like Scammacca. PSG are being smart... for once! Are we really going to pretend that PSG couldn't pay 45m for Scammacca? Or the 40+7m? Of course they could. Of course they could, but they're not. So just maybe, just maybe, apply that logic to your Milan, and you'll realize: "shit, maybe Maldini knows what he's doing."

    Just maybe.

If nothing else I'm glad this summer has been spent getting Milan and Barcelona fans' knickers in a twist. How dare little old Leeds bid for a player? And how dare Brugges not accept a lesser because they're the great AC Milan? Fuck off and go have a look in the bargain aisle you potless chancers... And give us back our Cup Winners Cup trophy while you're at it, you thieving, cheating Italian cunts.

Milan execs flying out to Brugges today to try and get a deal done for CDK. Not sure the answer of 37 million or fuck off will sound different in person to over the phone but at least we should soon know whether CDK is the greatest prospect in world football or a shit cunt that we didn't want anyway

So it seems like this went as follows.

Milan: we will offer you 32m

Brugges: no, the asking price is 37m. Leeds have already bid that

    Milan: how about 32m?

    Brugges: no.

Milan: what if we offered 32m

    Brugges: no.

Milan: okay well, we've got to go now, promising negotiations though, we'll submit our final offer by the end of the week

    *Milan offer 32m*
