I'm sure I've seen them but I have no memory of it so I've started the old Superman movies with Christopher Reeve. I really enjoyed the first one but now I'm wondering what to do with the second one. There are 2 different versions. Are they both worth watching? And if they are what order do I watch them in?

From what I remember, the Donner cut (the one released later) is much more serious than the original cut. The original cut is also more polished because they actually finished some of the effects and such that they didn't for some of the Donner scenes that were re-inserted.

I'd probably watch the one that was initially released as the Donner cut wasn't released until 2006.

  2. I started watching Star Trek: The Original Series. I've watched about 12 episodes (including the original pilot). I think I saw the JJ Abrams movies but I honestly don't remember anything about them.

TOS is fun. I like Shatner way more than I thought I might. I found the first few episodes repetitive but find they are getting better at creating some variation.

Has anyone played the CK3 AGOT mod? I struggled to care about CK3. I have nearly all the DLC for CK2 and CK3, obviously, felt very barebones to me outside of the fantastic character creator. I told myself maybe I'd give CK3 another shot once the AGOT mod came out, but I saw it was released and no one in here has mentioned it.

It's pretty good but definitely still in beta. I like that it's a little harder to actually grow if you start small because of how advanced some of the laws are (can't go to war against fellow vassals) so it's very intrigue-focused.

Adds some new stuff that's fun like Squires but also clearly needs some work.

Fantastic, obviously. I'm genuinely stunned by some of the decisions, mainly that... (final warning)

None of them died. Not even walking death spoiler Drax. Those trailers did a fine job of hyping up the emotional stakes and then giving us the ultimate happy ending anyway. So I ended up crying, but happy tears instead of my expected sad ones. I'm afraid Lyla and the animal gang were too new for their inevitable deaths to affect me.

I think whether James Gunn likes it or not we're going to see more of these characters, if they've got Pratt to agree to do a solo Star-Lord movie I think they'll be able to do a new Guardians film with the cast that want to come back, which sounds like it's everyone except Batista and Zoe Saldana.

Only slight down note was having Groot say something other than I am Groot, it was incredibly off-putting. And I did have to laugh that, just a few months after Gunn saying he doesn't put his wife in everything he does, Jennifer Holland is in the movie, because of course she is.

    Spoiler

I feel like you could read it as the first time the audience hears Groot say something other than I Am Groot, but that he does still say I Am Groot.

I am doing the Criterion Challenge this year. Have watched three movies so far.

Random Number Generator Selected - Onibaba (1964) - This was amazing. Two women living in a swamp who trap and kill soldiers leaving a civil war to make money. Things go awry when one of the women's son-in-law returns.

Made in Beligum - Rosetta (1999) - Also liked this one. Centered on a young girl who does what she needs to to get by.

Made in Taiwan - A Brighter Summer Day (1991) - A long one coming in at just under 4 hours but a really good story about a time period I wasn't super familiar with. Si'r gets mixed up in street gangs and a woman that leads to him struggling.

Really enjoying this challenge so far as all three are films I would have never watched and all really enjoyed.

    Been keeping up with this!

Made in Canada - Daytrippers (1996)
Made in Portugal - Ossos (1997)
Animals in the Collection - Koko: A Talking Gorilla (1978)
Films to Fall Asleep To - In The Mood For Love (2000)
Black Music Films - Jimi Plays Monterey (1986)
Black Lives Collection - Black Panthers (1968)
Heartbreak Heaven: Films to Watch When You’re Questioning Love - What Happened Was... (1994)
Criterion Double Features - Film #1 - The Hit (1984)
Criterion Double Features - Film #2 - Mona Lisa (1986)
Danny Peary’s “Guide for the Film Fanatic” - The Third Man (1949)
    Sundance Hits - Slacker (1990)
Early Women Filmmakers - La Cigarette (1919)

Dammit, and the three of you are some of my favorite people around here.

The main issue though (because I just discovered a bunch of Foundry modules that makes life easier) is timezones. Between working full time + kiddos, the only free time I have to play would be Monday, Tuesday, and Friday evenings after 8pm MST, which I think @Toe and @Mx. Canadian Destroyer are in EST, which would be 10p for them, which I worry is too late.  And @Maxx you're CST, so an hour ahead I think? Thoughts?

I mean I could do that on Fridays.

...and Berrios follows that up with a stinker. At least Gausman looked good, and Manoah was able to work through his struggles in the opener.

Will be hilarious if Kikuchi has the best start of any of them considering his results last year.

It's weird that some teams open with one road series, then go home for their second series while other teams play two series on the road before going home.  Should really just be consistent across the board.  I actually think last year there was a team that had three road series to begin the year, granted the delayed start to the season was the main reason for it as they otherwise would've played a week at home to start.

There's not much to be jealous of the Reds for but the fact they get to have Game 1 at home every single year is pretty cool.  There's just a slightly different vibe to Game 1 vs. Game 7 or 8.

I remember in 2005 the Mets started 0-5 on the road and were losing in the 8th inning of their 6th game before they scored some runs and got the win before going home.  Nothing would've said New York baseball like opening 0-6 and having to do your home opener in front of a demoralized crowd that would've booed half the team during the roster introductions.

The Jays have three road series before they play at home. They play the Cardinals, the Royals and the Angels before hosting the Tigers at home.

I need help in the Cena showcase match with The Undertaker at Vengeance 2003. The game tells me to counter or dodge Cena's attacks 3 times. I do that the entire time but the counter just doesn't go up. What am I doing wrong?

It's impossible to dodge something you cannot see.

"I guess time heals all wounds" "It wasn't time that did it" wasn't in the game, was it? I feel like I'd remember it if so. Joel had me teary eyed even before that.

    Spoiler

That whole scene and reveal wasn't in the game, no.

Pretty sure that won't happen as they want to end it at the exact same point as the games.

Regards to runtime, what is there to show?

That section of the game minus Joel massacring the Fireflies is very short. You have the giraffe, Ellie knocked out, some chat with Marlene, mass genocide of fireflies, then Joel saving Ellie and the closing scenes. It doesn't take that much time.

My one concern is another spoiler I read that they confirm 100% that the cure will work. For me that takes away a lot of nuance over Joel's decision and makes it a much less interesting dilemma and leaves too little down to the viewer/player to decide if what he did is right or wrong.

    Spoiler

Going to double spoiler tag in case people do or don't want to know regarding whether it is confirmed that the cure works.

    Spoiler

It is not confirmed that the cure works.

Haven't watched any games yet, so I have a question:

How does the pitch clock work as far as trying to pick off a runner goes? Does throwing to a base count as a pitch?

You get two disengagements. If you step off a third time, you have to get an out or it's a balk. Clock is reset on a pick off.

I liked it but I think I wanted more ambiguity as to whether their sacrifice worked or not.

    Yeah that's correct

It's not a great concept because the person who is forced to leave each episode is the one who knows the least about the mole, so it's in your best interest to pretend to be the mole, even if you're not. So people are constantly just fucking up tasks in really blatant ways. It just makes for quite exhausting viewing watching people pantomime their way through challenges.

I think the traitors concept is slightly better in that regard, but I think there could be some way to marry the concepts.

Yeah, I said this recently. It's like both shows are so close to figuring it out.

The thing with the Traitors is that there's no incentive to throw a challenge because they are competing for the same prize pot.

Have they ever explained how the mole wins? I assume it's not just a case of get to the end and win the money because there's no voting?

Pretty sure The Mole doesn't really win anything. I believe they get a stipend from the show just for playing though.

In some rules news - the ghost runner is back again and now permanent for the regular season.  Still would prefer if it doesn’t start until the 12th inning, but it’s clear the league just wants games done as fast as possible.

Also, they are apparently going to be strictly enforcing both the pitch clocks as well as balks.  Nice knowing you, Nestor Cortes.

So there is this new rule that's going to be very interesting. Pitchers are only allowed two "disengagements". If you try to pick someone off and they are safe, that counts as one. So if you try to pick someone off, then step off for whatever other reason, you now have to make sure you get an out if you step off or it's a balk.

Apparently teams are going to test out what this means for a runner on first and third. If the runner at first steps off but doesn't get the guy at first out, it's a balk and the runner scores.

I waited for the series to be up before tuning in. It's really great stuff. I know they're talking about quite a bit of future material but even if they were to just stick with campaign one, get that done, and then move on to campaign two it would have so much great material. Really high quality, they've done an amazing job of trimming down so many hours of content in to a digestible and enjoyable series.

They announced recently that The Mighty Nein is getting made.

    Continuing with the Criterion Collection.

Made in Canada - The Daytrippers (1996) - loved this. Full of some fun names - Stanley Tucci, Parker Posey, Liev Schreiber.

Made in Portugal - Ossos (1997) - a little slow but interesting nevertheless. The film is part film/part documentary.

In their defense, franchise is pretty solid as is.  Obviously there are things that could be tweaked, but at least the mode is playable.  Unlike some other games that just leave their franchise a broken mess (looking at you, Madden).

The type of overhauls that would make me run out to get the next game are things like what NBA2k did with their eras mode.  Imagine being able to go way back in baseball history and rewrite it right up to the modern day?  Or on the other side of it, being able to expand the league to 32, 36 etc teams.  I mean franchise mode in-game lasts forever but without the ability to evolve the league, you're just running in circles eventually.  Basically, think of OOTP but a playable version.

But considering these devs couldn't even add rotating year to year schedules in franchise, claiming that it would completely break their programming, it's all a fruitless pipe dream.

Yeah, anything that gets us closer to OOTP but you can play the games is my dream.

They can't surely remove them because they add a ridiculous level of tension to scenes. Stuff like the first time underground with Ellie when she breathes spores, the entire run through the hotel, the scenes with Abby and Ellie in the hospital in Part 2. They can all be done without but it wouldn't be the same.

    Spoiler

I think they have replaced spores with the underground fungal network in season 1.
