Wrestling Observer Round-Up

Posted by Dave Meltzer on Friday 24th December 2004

Hello everyone, and welcome to another edition of the Wrestling Observer Round-Up. Posting a little early this week so I can enjoy a bit of a Christmas break – and I’m sure you guys won’t hold that against me.

This week's Raw drew 1,254,496 viewers (up 94,782 from the previous week). The show saw a great match between William Regal and Chris Benoit (preceded by the appearance of "Nick" - and if you haven't worked it out by now....), as well as two solid matches between Sean Morley & Christian, and Shawn Michaels & Garrison Cade. There was further progression between Triple H & Ric Flair, as well as another win for Adrenaline over La Resistance.

Smackdown saw 1,220,878 viewers tune in, down 48,339 from last week. It felt like a pre-Christmas filler show, with nothing really standing out. Akio & Rey Mysterio had a nice little match, and Gangrel & Mark Jindrak continue to inexplicably get over. The Big Show's demolition of Spike Dudley was further evidence of Spike's imminent departure, and in a move that surprised no-one, it was announced that Kurt Angle would face The Undertaker at the Royal Rumble - assuming he gets past The Big Show next week. Sources suggest that the Eddie Guerrero / Carlito Cool segment was a one-off thing for Christmas, and no program is planned between the two.

There were a couple of minor injuries during the Heat tapings this week. Simon Dean & Randy Orton both hurt their thighs, but are both expected to be back in action before the next Raw.

A quick reminder, Raw & Smackdown will be "Best Of 2004" shows next week. Regular shows will return with Raw on January 3rd.

In big news for Smackdown, UPN agreed a 6 month extension for the show. Negotiations were reportedly shaky for a long time, so an extra 6 months is great news for the WWE.

Sources have noted that Shane Helms seems to have taken young Chris Cage under his wing backstage at Raw, and the two are fast becoming friends.

With the Women's division gone from Raw, Lita, Gail Kim & Victoria will be reporting to OVW this week. Some have suggested that this is further proof that they only reason they weren't released is because of connections to other talent in the company - Lita is dating Matt Hardy, Gail Kim is seeing Doug Basham, and Victoria is best friends with Trish Stratus.

In contract news, Lisa Marie Varon (Victoria) signed an 18 month extension this week, whilst Carly "Carlito Cool" Colon and Mike "Simon Dean" Bucci were given 2 and a half year extensions. However, Lillian Garcia left the company after failing to agree new terms.

Don't forget to check out our exclusive interview with Mark "Undertaker" Calloway this week, where he discusses the effect of the internet on the business, his relationships in the business, and his plans for retirement.

Anyway, that’s all for now – Have a great Christmas, and we'll see you in the New Year.
