"When life gives you lemons, make lemonade I suppose..."

It was December 27th, 2004. I was sitting at home, talking on the phone with my fiance when I got another call. Little did I know it would change my life...

"Yeah...Hold on Tiff, I have another call."

"Is this Mark Monahan?"

"The one and only. What can I help you with?"

"Well, you see....it's your grandfather. He's passed away."

"What? Grandpa Victor? Ok. I'll be there right away"

I didn't even have to ask. I knew exactly where to go, Gramp's mansion up in Newport. I drove up there as fast as I could to meet with the rest of my family. We had the funeral two days later.

While the priest was saying the blessing, a stocky bald man of about forty or so came up and asked me if I had a moment to speak with him.

"You're Mark right? My name's Joseph Gamba, I work for the company in charge of your grandfather's will"

"I'm guessing he left me a few odds and ends then?"

"You could say that..."

We met at Joe's office later that day. He turned on his TV and inserted a tape into the VCR. An image came up on the screen. It was my Grandfather. It looked like it was taped only weeks before.

"Mark, if you're watching this, I must have already passed away. I'm sorry I didn't let you know about this earlier, but please pay very close attention.

When I was about your age, I was good friends with a man named Vincent McMahon Jr. We both did odd jobs at his father's buisness, the WWWF."

Well, I didn't see that coming. But it got crazier from there.

"We were the best of friends, until one day in June of...oh I can't even remember the year to save myself. We were working backstage at an event when Vince did something I would have never expected from him. You need to understand something before I continue, Mr McMahon Sr. was very fond of me. He looked down on me as if I was a son he never had. This, of course, angered Vince to no end. So on that fateful day, Vince and I were setting up the lighting for the show. Little did I know that he was planning something to ruin me.

He sabotaged one of the lights near the entrance to the ring. Later, when the show began, the light fell and hit a young superstar named "Hip" Harry Kennedy in the back of the head. He died in the hospital the next morning. When it happened, Vince Sr was in a state of shock, but that shock soon turned to rage. He asked who had been doing the lights, and of course, his son said I was the one. I was fired the next day.

As you know, my life did not just end that day, in fact, it got better. I opened a small computer company later in the 1980s. As you know, the industry skyrocketed. I became rich quicker than I could have imagined. But the hatred in my heart for Vincent McMahon never left. That hatred must have tainted my soul as a few years later, I was diagnosed with Lupis.

I know my time is short Marcus, so let me get straight to the point. I have taken most of my funds and given them to charitable orgnizations around New England, but I have left one thing for you: my mansion here in Newport."

He had to be kidding. He couldn't leave me that much, but he did. But with a catch.

"...However, you will not live in this mansion, you will sell it for all it is worth. It won't be much, but it will be enough to get you started. The money is yours on the condition that you open a wrestling company that can someday bring down Vince McMahon. I know I shouldn't leave this in your hands, but I know you love the sport and you would be the best man for the job. I'm sorry to burden you, but I feel I will not be able to rest until Vince McMahon is paid back for his heinous deed. I wish you luck Marcus. Oh, and one last thing. I left a number with Joseph for you to call. The woman you find can help you with the business. Thank you and God bless you Mark."

The video cut off at that point. I couldn't even speak, so Joe broke the silence.

"So...as you can see, your grandfather has left you quite an inheritance. The value of his mansion is nearly five hundred thousand dollars."

"So that's it huh? Start a wrestling company and become rich just by signing a paper?"

"Pretty much."

I was torn. I had loved wrestling since I was a child but I had no knowledge of the business. But how could I turn down this kind of money? I had to do it...

"Where do I sign?"

And with the stroke of a pen, my life was changed forever. Joe gave me the number gramps had said to call just before I left. I don't think he wanted anything to do with all this. I called the number when I got back to my appartment.

"Are you Sophie Chambers?"

"Ye...yeah, that's me. May I ask who this is?

"My names Mark, Mark Monahan. I was told to call you by my grandfather, Victor Coyne?"

"Oh okay! How's old Victor doing these days?"

"Well....he died earlier this week..."

"Oh, I'm so sorry...."

"...Apparently, you have a background in wrestling yes?"

"Yeah, I used to work for Rhode Island Wrestling, why do you ask?"

"Well, it seems I have to open my own federation, and it looks like you're going to be my right-hand man...er woman. You want to go get some coffee and discuss all this?"

"I'll get my coat..."

And so began the era of American Wrestling Extreme. How the hell did I get myself into this mess?

Heh, here I was thinkng this would be the greatest thing that had every happened to me. Shows how much I know. When Tiff found out about my inheritance, she wanted to get married right away. But when she found out what I had done with it, she dropped me on the spot. My heart broken, all I had left was AWE, and who said I ever wanted it?

Federation Name: American Wrestling Extreme (AWE)

Owner: Mark Monahan

Level: Small

Cash in Bank: 500,000 U.S $

Public Image: 20

Risk: 70%

Production Values: 10

Advertising: 5%

Merchandising: 5%

My old friend Pete offered to make t-shirts for my wrestlers. He owned a small shop in southern Boston. The quality was iffy, but it was still pretty awesome to have our own merchandise.

Of course, we had no training camp and no developmental territory. How the hell would we? I called Sophie up to discuss our talent pool....

"The First 12"

Aidan Nathans: Age 21, 20 Over, Heel

I've seen tapes of Aidan from back when me and Pete used to buy them from that creepy old lady's shop in Pawtucket. He uses the Teardrop (Jumping Fisherman's Buster) as his finisher. He uses a Loner gimmick but is a really nice guy in real life.

Austin Lee: Age 20, 24 Over, Face

My main attraction, or so I hope. I heard about Austin from Sophie, who gave him a great reccomendation. He has that look to him that just screams "superstar". He uses the Degenerate Driver (DVD) as his finisher and sports a stoner gimmick. The weird thing is, he really is a pothead...

Buzz Stryker and Derek Wayne: Ages 28 and 23, 20 and 18 Over, Both Heel

The first team in AWE, and a great one to have. These two superstars go by the name of "Team Punishment" and both use cocky gimmicks. Buzz uses the Buzzsault (Moonsault) as his finisher which looks really impressive as he is a big guy. Derek tends to use the Sure Shot (Evenflow DDT) as his Finisher. Two real great guys to have backstage.

Chris Swan: Age 19, 15 Over, Face

One of the two youngest men on the roster, Swan has gotten rave reveiws from everyone who knows him. He uses the Swandive Headbutt as his finisher as not only a play on words, but as a tribute to his favorite wrestler, The Dynamite Kid. He's very modest and very timid backstage.

(Five down, seven to go)

Drew Pain: Age 20, 14 Over, Heel

The bastard child of Edge and Randy Savage if there ever was one. He's one of the cockiest men you'll ever see, but he backs up his claims. His finisher is the Painkiller (Sitdown Powerbomb) followed by some taunting of the fans. His gimmick is that of an egomaniac, but in real life, he's very friendly and very talkative.

Gavin Quartermain: Age 21, 34 Over, Heel

Probably the most over guy in AWE, Gavin is a huge Ric Flair mark. He comes out to the ring in a bathrobe covered in glitter and does the strut on the way to the ring. His move arsenal however, is very unlike Flair's. He uses a Powerbomb to DDT as his finisher and is known to go up top often. His gimmick is Suave which is ironic as the poor guy can't get a date in real life.

Gringo Loco: Age 29, 18 Over, Face

The "oldest" man in AWE, a man who is called "Gramps" by the rest of the roster. He resembles a young Terry Funk. He uses the Quebrada (450 Splash) as his finisher. He plays around with an Extremist gimmick, often entering throught the crowd and leaving the same way.

Jo Jo Fantastico: Age 22, 14 Over, Face

I really like this guy. He has a very technical moveset and uses a Diamon Dust as his finisher. He plays a "Dude" who is never fully aware of what's going on and never gets the joke. A great guy to have in any fed, he brings a great backstage prescence to AWE.

Katsuyori Shibata: Age 22, 20 Over, Face

I just couldn't pass this guy up. His talent in the ring can't be disputed, although he speaks very broken english. Because of that, he doesn't cut many promos, but at the same time, he doesn't really need to. The Penalty Kick (Roundhouse Kick) is his finisher of choice. He also likes to use a Cross Camel Clutch. Really happy guy, even though he doesn't truly grasp american culture.

Mitch Paradise: Age 18, 18 Over, Face

I didn't really want to get so many young wrestlers on my roster but there's just too much talent in each of them to pass up. Mitch is "The Rookie" of AWE, and tends to be a prankster backstage. He uses a Super Kick as his finisher and plays a cool gimmick, wearing a hawaiian shirt to the ring.

Richard J. Criado: Age 26, 18 Over, Heel

When you think of RJC, you tend to think of Ken Shamrock. He's a very scary looking guy who you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley. The funniest thing is, he owns a comic book shop in real life. He uses a Brainbuster Bomb to finish off his opponents and has an arrogant gimmick.

Tuesday, February 1st, 2005

I had a small meeting with the staff and roster today. Our first show will be "Innaguration" on the 11th. We're having it at a public event hall down the street from the Walmart in Cranston. We talked about the matches that will be taking place, as the first show will be devoted to a 12 man tournament for the AWE World Title. The first 6 matches will be this month, with the last three at next month's show, Big Trouble, along with a Triple Threat for the title itself.

After the meeting, I spent the remainder of the day handing out flyers for the show, covered in "sponsored by" ads. I was surprised as hell that IGN.com wanted to sponsor us, but hey, money is money.

If you're interested in coming, tickets are 10$ at the door. Tell your friends! Hell, tell your enemies too!

I don't feel very safe anymore...

Pete and I were playing Gamecube in my appartment last night as celebration of our first show coming up when a brick came sailing through my window, crushing my Cube.

"Dude, what the hell?"

I picked up the brick. It had a note tied to it...

"Dear AWE Shithead, I know where you live. Give up or else. Signed, Stampede Wrestling....what the hell is this?"

"Stampede Wrestling, sounds like a hick fed to me."

He downed the rest of his beer and put on Comedy Central. I kept looking at the letter, almost scared. What kind of freak has this little of a life? Apparently someone in SW, a fed ranked just above us. It seems they had a deathwish though, because they were going to be the first victims of AWE, soon to be 34th ranked wrestling fed.

Well, I made a mistake folks, the tickets for Innaguration are 20$. I suppose now no one will show up :pinch:

Anyway, here's the tournament card for the show:

Chris Swan vs Aidan Nathans

Gringo Loco vs Richard J Criado

Mitch Paradise vs Derek Wayne

Katsuyori Shibata vs Buzz Stryker

Gavin Quarterman vs Jo Jo Fantastico

Austin Lee vs Drew Pain

Despite the higher price, (gets slapped by Sophie for screwing up) I really hope you come to the show. It'll be a hell of a night!

Later that night, I received a call. It was Pete's sister, Anne.

"Mark...is that you, Mark?"

"Yeah, it's me Anne. It's two in the morning, what's the deal?"

"I...it's Pete. He got into an accident..."

"Oh shit, i'll get to the hospital right away..."

Pete shouldn't have driven home that night. I should've realized he was drunk. Luckily, he wasn't too hurt, but he wouldn't be able to work for awhile. His father blamed me for the accident and wouldn't take care of my merchandise order. Well, there goes that...

Merchandise: 0%

However, there was one bright spot in the week following, I found a guy to play our "Authority Figure". I met him in a bar in downtown Providence. He hadn't had work in months and he really needed this job. Lucky for me, he was gold on the mic...

Preston Quinn: Age 26, 15 Over, Tweener

Like I said, this guy was pure money on the microphone. He can make you love him or hate him, it's as easy as him deciding which. He is always seen wearing a black suit that helps solidify his gimmick. He's also an established grappler, with enough talent to wrestle a match or two.

AWE Presents: Innaguration

As I flung open the doors to the building, I suddenly got goosebumps. This was the start of something special, I knew it. Now I just had t....

"Uncle Mark! Uncle Mark!"

Oh **** me.

"Uncle Mark! I haven't seen you in forever!"

She ran up and gave me a hug. Let me introduce by niece, Amy, a happy-go-lucky sixteen year old that loves her uncle more than I can stand.

"Uh...hey Amy. How's it going? Where's Rick (my older brother)?"

"Oh, he just left. He said you wouldn't mind watching me today while he filed his taxes!"

Double ****.

"Maybe I can do something to help! Can I uncle Mark, can I?"

"Well...I don't know Amy, it's really busy around here today..."

"Please Uncle Mark? PLEASE? I can do something can't I?

She put on the face, you know the one. The one that kids make that's so damn cute it's sickening. But damn it, it always works.

"Alright, alright. You can uhh....do interviews with the wrestlers, okay?'

"Okay! I'll do my best sir!"

She saluted me and ran off toward the backstage area, laughing and jumping as she went. I'm starting to think God hates me.

The show opened as my two commentators, Joe Wheeler and Steve Jackson walked down to ringside to a small pop. Joe got a small "Yu-gi-oh!" chant, which confused the hell out of me. I couldn't tell what they were saying during the show, as the only thing recording all this was a hobo I paid 100$ to hold my camcorder. Hopefully, he doesn't screw this up. I'm going to be sending the tape to Rhode Island Access after I look it over.

Preston Quinn: Large and in charge.

Quinn made his way to the ring to a mixed reaction from the crowd. He grabbed the mic and began to speak....

Quinn: "Ladies and gentlemen of Rhode Island (cheap pop), welcome to American Wrestling Extreme!

(fans applaud)

Quinn: "Tonight, you're in for one hell of a show! We're having a 12 man tournament to determine who will have a shot at becoming the AWE World Heavyweight Champion next month at Big Trouble!

(more applause)

Quinn: "So just sit back, relax, drink your beer and enjoy the excitement of AWE!"

Hmmm, just as good as I thought. This guy had a lot of talent and a voice that could rival that of a big top ringmaster. So far so good.

Preston Quinn debuted his new gimmick (Authority Figure), it got a positive response. Preston Quinn gained overness from this segment.

Aidan Nathans vs Chris Swan: AWE Title Qualification Match

Swan is out first to some applause. I guess they just have to figure out who's good and who's bad since this our first show. Aidan comes out next to some applause and the match is on. Cross-elbow tie up with Swan pushing Nathans into the corner. He follows it up with a few chops which get the expected "Wooo!" chants from the crowd. Nathans grabs Swan and tosses him into the turnbuckle and delivers a few chops of his own before hitting a nice vertical suplex for a 2 count. Nathans pulls Swan up and puts him into a side headlock. Elbows to the gut by Swan before he tosses Nathans into the ropes and delivers a beautiful belly to belly suplex! Referee Rich Bass counts the fall, but only gets to 2. Swan argues a little which allows Nathans to get up and deliver a DDT. Both men are down. The count gets to 6 before both wrestlers get up and exchange a few right hands. Swan ducks a punch and hits Nathans with a german suplex! Shades of Chris Benoit, anyone? He goes up top and gets set to deliver the Swandive Headbutt, but Nathans pushes the referee into the ropes, knocking Swan down. Aidan picks him up and delivers the Teardrop for 3. After the match, Swan extends his hand to Nathans who just walks out and leaves.

Dude.....my hand is huge....

Austin Lee is walking backstage when Junior Interviewer Amy runs up to him.

"Mr Lee! Mr Lee! I was just wondering how you feel ab....*sniffs* do you smell that?

"Dude, are you high? No wait, that's me. Hehe...

What were we talking about again?"

"Well...I was going to ask you how you felt about your AWE Title qualification match tonight!"

"I have a match tonight?"

"Well then, I better go get ready huh? Thanks for the info sweet cheeks.

He walks off, making a "Call Me" sign at Amy. She has a disgusted look on her face as we cut back to the ring.

Heh, not too bad for her first try. Maybe I'll let her do this from now on. I just wonder if Austin was in character or not...

Richard J. Criado vs Gringo Loco: AWE Title Qualification Match

When we get back to the ring, Richard J. Criado is standing in the middle of it with a mic. The fans wait patiently to see what he has to say.

"Damn, if I had known signing up with this fed would take me to crap towns like this, I NEVER would have done it!"

(Crowd boos)

He slumps over like a caveman and dances around, mocking the crowd. Serveral people throw their programs at him. Well, at least IGN will know I handed them out...

He continues to egg on the crowd until a man in red, white and blue attire runs out from the crowd and bashes Criado with a chair! It's Gringo Loco! The ref rings the bell and the match is on! Stomps to the back of Criado by Loco. The crowd is already behind him, starting a "Kick his ass!" chant. He's happy to do so. Loco picks Rich up and tosses him into the ropes, only to get floored by a huge clothesline! Headlock applied on Loco down on the mat. Referee Felony asks Gringo if he wants to tap out, he refuses to. After a few seconds of struggling, he gets up and side suplexes Criado! He goes up top....only to see Rich jump up and deliver a sick arm drag! Cover for...2! Criado just can't believe it. He locks Loco in a standing ankle lock, only to get an kick to the face for his troubles! Loco is going up top, here it is, Quebrada! 1,2,3! It's over! After the match, Gringo exits the same way he came in, through the crowd. They're just eating this up.

Gringo Loco debuted his new gimmick (Extremist), it got a positive response. Richard J. Criado debuted his new gimmick (Arrogant).

Aidan Nathans: Man on a Mission

We return backstage as Amy begins an interview with the first man to advance to the semi-finals of the tournament next month, Aidan Nathans.

"Mr Nathans, do you have anything to say regarding your match next month? According to the card, you will be facing Gringo Loco!"

(Crowd Cheers)

"Hmph, it's all the same to me. No matter who gets in my way, I will advance to the triple threat match and become, the first ever AWE World Heavyweight Champion. But since I do know it's you I'm facing Loco, I'll give you fair warning. If you decide to get in the ring with me at Big Trouble, you're going to be sorry. I won't let you stop me and I will beat you by any means neccessary. Understand?"

He walks off without as much as a glance at Amy as Joe Wheeler announces a 15 minute intermission from ringside.

Aidan Nathans gained overness from this segment.

Mitch Paradise vs Derek Wayne: AWE Title Qualification Match

Derek Wayne is already in the ring, preparing for his match. He goes through the ropes and down to ringside, snatches a young fan's sign, and rips it to shreds. Instant heat I suppose.

"Hip, hip..."

Out from behind the curtain comes a man wearing a green tropical shirt, sunglasses and carrying a small stereo playing "Island in the Sun" by Weezer. It's Mitch Paradise! He runs into the ring a tosses his sunglasses into the crowd. He dances around for a few seconds until Wayne floors him with a punch! The bell rings and the match is on! Stomps to the gut by Wayne on Paradise. Quick pin for 1. He picks Mitch up but Paradise counters with a falling jawbreaker! The crowd is getting behind him as he bounces off the ropes and delievers a sweet senton to Wayne. Pin for 2. Mitch fires up the crowd by dancing around Wayne as he gets up. CLOTHESLINE OUT OF NOWHERE! Looks like Derek got his energy back. He sets Mitch up for the Sure Shot, but gets tossed over Paradise's head! He gets back up....and gets hit with the Superkick! 1..2..3! It's over! Paradise picks up his boom box and heads backstage as the crowd goes nuts!

We stay at ringside as Buzz Stryker walks down, wearing the same "Team Punishment" shirt that Derek Wayne was seen with. Instantly, the crowd gets all over him. He leans on one of the turnbuckles and waits for his opponent.

Buzz Stryker vs Katsuyori Shibata: AWE Title Qualification Match

Shibata walks down to the ring to a small pop. He gets in and stands toe to toe with Stryker. They stare at each other for a minute or so before Stryker slaps Shibata right across the face! Punch combo by Stryker that sends Shibata down to the mat. Buzz bounces off the ropes and goes for a splash, but Shibata rolls out of the way. He performs a standing moonsault and goes for a cover, but only gets 1. Buzz stands up and gives Shibata a good ole' thumb to the eye followed by a hard DDT. He taunts the crowd a bit before going up top to hit the Buzzsault. 1..2..3. It's over. Buzz struts around the ring for awhile, much to the dismay of the fans.

Gavin Quartermain vs Jo Jo Fantastico: AWE Title Qualification Match

Quartermain struts down to the ring in his sequenced bathrobe, getting a couble of "Woo!" chants. They completely dissapear however, when he starts to toss the robe into the crowd, then pulls it back. Fantastico runs down and gets right in Gavin's face...and begins to dance? Quartermain tries to take a lunge at Jo Jo who ducks and proceeds to punch the hell out of him! Quick suplex on Quartermain for 2. He slides out of the ring to catch his breath only to get hit from behind with a baseball slide. He tosses GQ on top of the announcers' table and goes to the top rope. He goes for a frog splash...but Gavin rolls off the table! Jo jo is knocked out! Quartermain rolls him into the ring and hits the Powerbomb DDT. It's over. 1..2..3. Quartermain dances around the ring until Fantastico stands up and extends his hand. Gavin stares at it for a minute but clotheslines him instead! He laughs to himself as he heads backstage!
