WCW Saturday Night (13/01/1996)

The fireworks go off, the crowd go wild, and WCW Saturday Night is on the air!

Chris Kanyon/Devon Storm vs Fire & Ice

We head to the ring straight away for our opening match. Fire And Ice, coming off of a bad loss to the Public Enemy last week, go up against the interesting team of Chris Kanyon and Devon Storm. Last week, Fire And Ice didn't seem on the same page, and they both look apprehensive from the get go. As with last week, Chris Kanyon showcased some nice variations on moves, including nailing an impressive looking fireman's carry into a neckbreaker on Ice Train, who is a lot larger than him. Most of the match, Kanyon and Storm were on the defensive, as Train and Norton used thier size and power to thier advantage, but after a missed moonsault from Storm, the match turned into a brawl. As Kanyon was trying to deal with Norton, Train rushed at him, only to miss and collide with Norton, sending him out of the ring to the floor. Train stumbled backwards, and Storm rolled him up, grabbing the tights for the 1,2,3! Scott Norton got back in the ring, looking seriously pissed off, and shoves his partner in the chest. Train looks apologetic, they share a couple of harsh words, but temperatures simmer, and they leave together.(55%)

Warriors Ready For The Heat

We cut to a pre-taped video segment now with The Road Warriors in the backstage area.

Hawk: Well, people have been saying to us that we don't have what it takes anymore, that we aren't the same guys who were tearing it up in the 80's or the early 90's. When we were doing that though, there weren't a bunch of punks called Harlem Heat running around with chairs, sneaking up on people!

Animal: Heat, you've been clever. You left us laying two weeks in a row, and think you have the edge. What you don't realise is that when you hurt or injure a warrior, we come back twice as hard, twice as ferocious! To put us out, you'd have had to keep us down permanently those last two times, but we are still standing, and all you've done is make us angry. Clash Of The Champions, those belts are coming back to where they belong!

Hawk: OHHHH WHAT A RUSH! (70%)

Steve McMichael vs Michael Wallstreet

The next match saw the first outing of the new year for both the men, as Steve McMichael battled Michael Wallstreet. After a quick start by Mongo where he used his power to gain the advantage, Wallstreat used his quick wits, and caught Mongo with a low blow out of sight of the ref, to take the match in his direction. A slow, methodic encounter, Wallstreet used his experience to his advantage, slyly cheating (thumbs to the eye, using the ropes for leverage) to keep McMichael down and hurt. Wallstreet almost got the victory with a vicious samoan drop, but when Wallstreet tried to hook McMichael in an abdominal stretch, McMichael just used his power to bust out, and plant Wallstreet with a hiptoss. That was the turning point, and after a gorilla press slam and bodyslam, McMichael hit Wallstreet hard with the Mongo Tackle to get the academical 3 count. (58%)

The Revolution?

We head to another taped segment, this time a segment with James Vandenburg and Masahiro Chono, the US Champion.

Vandenburg: Ladies and gentleman, feast your eyes on the best thing to happen to WCW for a long time, and YOUR US Champion, Masahiro Chono! I told you that WCW dropped the ball, missed the boat when it came to certain decisions, and none more so than over-looking this man! Well, now they can't do that, as he is holding the 2nd most important title in wrestling!

First things first, we would like to see the boys in the back put Chono on the Clash Of The Champions card, to further showcase to the world the talent this man has. It doesn't matter who he fights, title or non-title, we just wouldn't want everyone to miss out on yet another oppurtunity to see Chono in action!

But, this isn't the end of it all. Oh no! With WCW still struggling to comprehend, and wasting thier time with even more waste of space wrestlers, I'm going to continue bringing in the real talent! A revolution? Nay, more just giving the fans what they want, whether they'd like to admit it or not. When the time comes, and everything is right, Chono won't be the only man standing by my side. Who else will I bring in? I guess you'll just have to wait and see. See, Chono and everything associated with him is already putting bums in seats, and it can only continue!

Don't fear the change, embrace it. (62%)

Belfast Brawler vs Glacier

In our next match, we got another wrestler in his first match of the year, as Fit Finlay, "The Belfast Brawler" met Glacier, who lost to Chris Benoit last week. The crowd were on Finlay's back from the start, but after a brief flurry of kicks and punches taking him off guard at the start, Finlay ducked a savate kick attempt and clotheslined Glacier to the ground, taking control of the match in one fell swoop. Using several leglocks to wear down Glacier's legs so as to cut his arsenal down, Finlay also threw him about with several power moves, including a vicious rolling fireman's carry, which almost got him the three count. Glacier tried several attempts at a comeback, but Finlay used his earlier work on Glacier's legs to take him down again, using a leg trip and elbow drop combo to further injure Glacier's leg. After missing a clothesline into the corner, Glacier had a chance to fight back against Finlay, but after a couple of kicks aimed at Finlay's chest, Glacier was showing the strain of the assault Finlay had made on his knee, and visibly was limping, cutting down his speed advantage. After an attempt at the Chrionic Kick, which Finlay ducked, Glacier fell to the mat, obviously in pain. The Brawler, showing little remorse, picked him up and dropped him on his head with a tombstone piledriver for the 3 count!

As if to add insult to injury, Finlay wasn't finished, and began to kick away at the injured knee. Locking him into a stepover toehold, Finlay wrenched back, as Glacier writhed in agony. Finlay only let go when a couple more referees came down to stop the assault. Glacier had to be helped to the back by the officials. (58%)

Winner: The Belfast Brawler

Mr JL./Alex Wright vs The Faces Of Fear

The fourth match showed another unlikely pairing, as Alex Wright teamed up with the masked Mr JL. to take on The Faces of Fear, Meng and The Barbarian. Alex Wright and JL. were commendable in trying to take the initiative against thier much more experienced opponents, but after Meng shrugged off an Alex Wright dropkick, and the Barbarian backdropped JL. over the top ropes, The Faces of Fear were able to take control, blasting Wright with several high power moves. Cutting the ring off, The Barbarian got two near falls from a shoulderbreaker and a piledriver, before Meng came in and also nearly won the match with a savate kick. Wright tried to fight back, but any attempts were quelled quickly by the power of the FOF, and they effectively cut off Mr JL. The chance came when Wright ducked a Barbarian clothesline, and rebounded with a spinning heel kick, leaving both men on the floor. Wright crawled over, and just made the tag to JL, who nailed the incoming Meng with a springboard dropkick from the outside! As the match degenerated into a brawl, Meng caught Wright in the Tongan Death grip, but unbeknownst to him, JL reversed a Barbarian whip outside, smashing the Barbarian into the steps. As Wright struggled, JL came off the top and lamped Meng with a flying clothesline, breaking the grip. Wright ducked around the stumbling Meng, hit a lovely release german suplex, and JL. crawled over and covered for the unlikely 1,2,3!

Thier euphoria at the win doesn't last long, as The Barbarian is back in, and begins to beat down on both of them. Knocking Wright to the outside with a clothesline, Barbarian then picks up JL., and drops him with a nasty powerbomb. Meng is back up now, and they leave together, as the crowd boos them severely for the after match attack.

Winner: Mr JL. and Alex Wright

Main Event: Disco Inferno vs Hugh Morrus

Tonights main event is between Disco Inferno (who gets a big pop from the crowd), and Dungeon of Doom's Hugh Morrus, who last lost to Johnny B. Badd for the TV Title. Both men wanted the win, and they both looked focused on the job (but Disco still found time for a pre match dance, much to the fans delight). Disco took the early advantage, avoiding an avalanche attempt by Morrus, and using quick jabs and a perfect swinging neckbreaker to take control of the match. Disco, however, stupidly went for a piledriver early in the match, which was easily blocked by a powerful Morrus, backbodydropping him to the mat. From there, Disco was beaten relentlessly with some high impact manuevres, including an impressive flying shoulderblock for a close 2 count. Picking him up, Morrus then landed a vicious powerbomb, but after it only got him another 2 count, he seemed very annoyed. Hitting an avalanache this time, Morrus placed Disco in position, and headed to the top rope, looking for the coup de grace. Morrus moonsaulted, but in his frustration, he hadn't got Disco out enough for it, who moved, and Hugh landed hard. As Hugh sturggled to get back up, Disco kicked him in the gut, and this time was able to hit the jumping piledriver with little resistance. This only got a 2 count, but Disco, sensing Morrus was struggling and he needed to take advantage of it, quickly got him up again, and after another kick in the stomach and a Chartbuster, Disco pinned Morrus to the mat for the 1,2,3! (59%)

Winner: Disco Inferno

Over the moon with the victory, Disco got out of the ring, and climbed into the crowd, where he began dancing with his many fans. The camera's faded to black as they showed a dissapointed Hugh Morrus in the ring on his knees, shaking his head.
