NEW YORK -- Texas second baseman Alfonso Soriano was the surprise leader in the first voting totals for next month's All-Star game.

Soriano, a two-time All-Star traded to the Rangers by the New York Yankees in February for AL MVP Alex Rodriguez, has 729,949 votes, the commissioner's office said Tuesday.

Rodriguez, a seven-time All-Star shortstop who changed positions as a result to the trade, led AL third baseman at 558,880.

Boston's Nomar Garciaparra led AL shortstops at 412,742, even though he has been sidelined all season by an Achilles' tendon injury.

San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds had the second-highest vote total at 647,183.

The Mets' Mike Piazza, a 10-time All-Star, led NL catchers at 500,446 even though he is playing first base more often in recent weeks.

Also leading their positions in the AL are Detroit catcher Ivan Rodriguez (516,332), Yankees first baseman Jason Giambi (376,307), Boston outfielders Manny Ramirez (626,272) and Johnny Damon (360,755) and Anaheim outfielder Vladimir Guerrero.

In the NL, other position leaders include St. Louis first baseman Albert Pujols (449,708) and third baseman Scott Rolen (461,194), Houston second baseman Jeff Kent (500,876) and shortstop Adam Everett (302,310), Chicago Cubs outfielder Sammy Sosa (586,479) and Cincinnati outfielder Ken Griffey Jr.

The All-Star game is scheduled for July 13 in Houston.

well that happens in stadium voting too. It's a popularity contest, everyone knows it.

But another reason online voting sucks, Fans in Japan just vote for Ichiro, Hideki, and Kaz. Hideki didnt belong in the game last year, but he got in because of all the votes from Japan.

Just shut the fuck up...

Agree with Biggz here. Get over it. It's about the popularity. People use the same lame excuse with VC in basketball. There are 270 million+ Americans......quit your whining. What team do you like? I'm sure there have been guys picked from your team........and you probably wouldn't complain in that scenario.

Matsui.

Online voting is a joke, Derek Jeter is having the worst season of his career right now as he is leading the AL in votes for a shortstop. I am a Yankee Fan, but even I can say that Derek Jeter shouldn't be an all-star this year and put in someone who deserves it. They should let the managers decide online voting sucks.

Although i understand the fans want to see him, Nomar has no business going if he gets selected. He's been injured the entire season. On another note, the whole fucking Astros team looks to be going to the game :D

look at Sammy, now I am a Cubs fan, but Sammy doesn't deserve to start this year at least, but he is very popular with the fans.

Is Mora even on the ballot as a 3B?

I'm going to the O's game on Friday and I'll pick up a ballot then. I'll let you know if you don't find out earlier.

Knowing MLB he's not on the ballot... people wonder why everyone outside of New York, Chicago, and Boston doesn't care about baseball. It's because MLB seems to almost ignore the other cities.

Eh, I go to a Red Sox fan site where several members have and encourage voting 25 times for all Red Sox players.

And if you have another e-mail address, vote 25 more times with that.

Red Sox fans dominate internet voting. They've had the 30th man selection the past 2 years.......and their other players always close out strong in online voting.
