I would've said it in a more condescending tone, but the way you put 'hold the direction down' might have meant hold in the direction of goal, which is technically right. Take heart in that.

I thought if you pressed down it knocked the ball along the ground? Or is that only for corners? I'm sure L1 or the left trigger chips, even from the freekick position. On the X-Box, holding the black button or the white button (I can't remember) when you shoot does a slightly weaker freekick, faster than a chip but slower than a normal shot so you can curl it good. I've only scored one of these, most of them are easily saved. Hoof it hard with a bit of curl is the best bet.
