I agree with most of the stuff above, and don't make me say this again, but...

JACK KEROUAC's "ON THE ROAD". It's the quintessential 20th century novel, at least for free thinkers it is.

I've never been a fan of Agatha Christie, but the others seem good. Hemingway and Tolkien are good.
