INFORMATION ON DAYTONA 500 QUALIFYING FROM JAYSKI.COM

How the fields for the Gatorade Duels are set: The front row for the Daytona 500 and the starting lineups for the Gatorade Duel qualifying races were set by today's qualifying. Burton will start on the pole for the first Gatorade Duel and Gordon will start on the pole for the second. Starting positions in the Gatorade Duel races are determined by qualifying speeds. The participating eligible highest ranked 35 in 2005 car owner points are assigned to Gatorade Duel races based on their standing in the 2005 final car owner points: odd-numbered ranked car owners compete in the first Gatorade Duel; even-numbered owners in the second. Owners who failed to finish in the top-35 of the 2005 car owner points will be assigned to a Gatorade Duel based on qualifying times: the highest qualifying owner to the first Duel; the next to the second and alternating through the remaining entries.(NASCAR Statistical Services)(2-12-2006)

Finishing positions in the Gatorade Duel races will determine starting positions in the Daytona 500. First the front-row qualifiers will be removed from the equation. The remaining eligible highest ranked 35 in car owner points, plus the two highest finishing non-top 35 teams from each Duel and the fastest drivers not among those 35 (by time from Daytona 500 qualifying) or a past champion will make up the field for the 2005 Daytona 500.

Format for making the 2006 Daytona 500 field:

-The top 35 teams in owner's points from 2005 are guaranteed a spot somewhere in the field. 96-Terry Labonte is assured a spot as a past champion.

-Twenty-two other drivers are competing for the remaining seven spots in the 43-car field.

Pole Day Qualifying:

-The drivers posting the top two speeds: 31-Jeff Burton and 24-Jeff Gordon, are locked in on the front row unless they have to go to a backup car or change an engine.

-The three fastest cars among those not in the top 35 in 2005 owners points:

36-Bill Elliott, 32-Travis Kvapil and 00-Hermie Sadler, also earned a starting spot.

Four other drivers can make the Daytona 500 via speed, the rest out of the top-35 in owners points must race their way in.

Gatorade duel qualifying races

-Burton starts first in the first of Thursday's two 150-mile races; Gordon starts first in the second. The remaining cars are assigned based on qualifying times, but the top 35 from last year are split 18-17 in the two duels.

Setting the Daytona 500 field

-The inside spots for rows 2 to 20 are set in the first duel. It includes 17 of the top 35 from last year and the top two duel finishers outside the top 35. The same thing applies for outside spots in the second duel – 16 of the top 35 and top two outside the top 35.

-Positions 40, 41 and 42 go to the three cars not in last year's top 35 that had the fastest Pole Day speed, if not accounted for in the 150s.

-The final position goes to a past Cup champion. If no past champ needs it, the 43rd spot goes to the next fastest non-top 35 car.

Any questions children?

I have a few:

Why do Burton and Gordon race in the Gatorade duels if they're locked into the front row? Isn't that just asking for it? Also, what would happen if one of them wrecked and had to switch cars...wouldn't that mean that they would have gone from the pole to the back of the pack thanks to the Gatorade 125s?

I really hate the Gatorade 125s. My personal favorite driver (Jarrett) qualified 3rd, which in any other race would be just that, third. But thanks to the 125s he's starting in 25th position.

Enjoyed the hell out of the Bud Shoot Out on Sunday, good racing....

Glad to see Jeff Burton get the pole, that team needs a break.

Bobby Labonte and Petty Enterprises seems to be a good match...it'll be nice to see the 43 back in victory lane.

My boy, Elliot Sadler has a good shot at the Cup this year....

Sadly, my other favorite, Sterling Marlin looks like he may be in for another long year.

Quite impressed with Denny Hamlin so far.

Still wish Kurt Busch would hit the wall more often.

Eh, I think it's good being different for this once. Also, racing for qualifying makes it worth watching qualifying. Teams probably wouldn't care nearly as much as they do here in the conventional all alone on the track get two laps and park the damn thing.

58 people qualify for this sucker. Next race I doubt there'll be more than 46-47.

The teams I am rooting for this season:

Jimmy Johnson (apparently was sent to the back for some illegal car changes)

Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman's Car (who was also sent to the back, even though they qualified 43rd <_<)

Jeff Gordon (who is the Row 1 Outside starter)

and Carl Edwards (Gotta love the backflip)

So a poor showing for my teams this year

Daytona News & Notes a day before the 500

-Matt Kenseth won the IROC Race yesterday, his third win in the series. Kenseth, a former IROC series champion, dominated much of the race but a late race restart nearly cost him. Martin Truex, Jr., the two time Busch Series Champion, got by Kenseth on the restart but Kenseth wouldn't give in. Kenseth hit Truex in the left rear several times, finally forcing Truex up and out of the draft. Truex would end up finishing fifth.

-Mark Martin picked up his 4th career win at Daytona yesterday in only his 4th career start in the Craftsman Truck Series. Martin, who started on the pole, led 42 of the 102 laps to pick up the victory. A late race caution reset the field for a Green, White, Checkered finish but Ron Hornaday Jr. spun out taking several other trucks with him which froze the field and handed the win to Martin on a silver plater. Its a good thing too, Toyota teammates Ted Musgrave & Todd Bodine were right behind him planning to lay back and get a run on him on the last lap.

-Ken Schrader paced the last Daytona 500 practice, but DEI teammates Martin Truex, Jr. & Dale Earnhardt, Jr. weren't too far behind him. Jeff Green, Kevin Lepage, Dale Jarrett, Sterling Marlin, Kyle Petty, Jeff Burton, & Brent Sherman rounded out the top 10 in practice.

-Mike Wallace may not make it to the Daytona 500 after a nasty wreck in the Craftsman Truck Series opener on Friday. Wallace, who was diagnosed with post concussion syndrome at the track, hopes to be cleared to race on Sunday. If he isn't Kenny Wallace, Mike's brother, will take his place in the race. Kenny practiced Mike's car in the last Daytona 500 session on Saturday.

-J.J. Yeley picked up the pole for today's Busch Series opener. Yeley is one of 17 drivers who are in both the Cup Series and Busch Series races at Daytona this weekend. Rounding out the top 5 spots in qualifying were Aaron Fike, Clint Bowyer, Johnny Sauter, & John Andretti.

Johnson had a good car all day long, but once he was out in front for the green white checkred, he had it since he kept it down low and the high line was horrible all day long. And Stewart was just driving like a retard, shunting Kenseth like that was just stupid that he could've hurt someone. But Kenseth's remarks after race was funny calling Stewart a hyprocrit. But overall, a good, pretty clean race with no big ones.

I loved Daytona this year, and I love the fact that Stewart was nowhere near the top. Stewart is one of the biggest hypocrits I've seen as he went after Kenseth. Then after the race "He started it and I finished it" to top off his week of bump drafting is dangerous and may kill somebody......dumb ass.

If Mears had followed Newman when he ducked out going into Turn 3 I think Newman may have gotten Stewart. Probably wouldn't have mattered though since Biffle wrecked coming out of Turn 4.

Oh and Biggz, I think your thinking of Clint Bowyer the rookie.

Three things. . .

1) You do realize Stewart finished 5th right?

2) Kenseth is a pussy. A whiny pussy at that.

3) Stewart didn't bump draft, so I don't see how he was a hypocrite.

Guest Chaos Theory

Stewart is a hypocrite. He said that aggressive driving was going to get someone killed. Then he did it to Kennseth when Kennseth didn't do a damn thing to him. All Kennseth did was get close to him going through the turn to get a run coming onto the back stretch. Dale Jr. Does it all the time and no one bitches at him. I fucking hate Tony Stewart and he should go the fuck back to Inday car racing.
