The Pillows (SHOCK OF SHOCKS) - Japanese band that models themselves after the Pixies a little.

Cibo Matto - I guess the phrase is "trip-hop" but that sounds so lame. Get "Stereo Type A."

Asobi Seksu - NYC shoegazer rock, I figure that if you like the Apples in Stereo you'll probably like them.

Mirah - Indie-pop singer/songwriter. Her music varies in tone but I think it would fit the bill.
